MEETING OF THE BOARD OF RECTORS IN RALEIGH. Dl Oxford, Durham, Raleigh, Greensboro, Mnrfrcesboro and High Point Com pete for the Site The Decision. By telegraph to The Day. Raleigh, N. C, Feb. 12, 2:50, p m. Raleigh wins. A. Hr-A. Williams. We condense the following from the Raleigh Neus Observer of this morning : In pursuance of the arrangement agreed upon the board of trustees of the Baptis Female University met in the Baptist church in this citv last night at 8 o'clock, Col. L. L. Polk in the chair. Nearly all the members of the board being present the meeting proceeded to. business.' A motion pre vailed that the delegations to present the claims of the various towns com peting for the University be heard from. A motion prevailed that the representatives of each competing town should be allowed not more than onehour for discussion. Judge Faircloth, of Goldsboro, moved that the visiting and location committee make their report which was carried. The report was the com mittee had visited Oxford, where they i-Hted the sites there offered, six in number. They next visited Durham, where they were shown three sites. They considered the Cox site the most desirable. They then visited Greens boro and were shown the si'es of that city, after wh:ch t)ey adjourned to ni -'et in Raleigh yesterday when they visited the proposed site in this city. Mr. Winston, of Oxford, then pro ceeded to present the claims for that town for the Baptist University. He sjoke of Oxford's railroad facili ties, of her location and of her healthy record. There had only been three deaths in Horner s scnool .since it was established, and only one death in Hobgood's Female Institute there. A large number of the people of Ox ford are Baptists, and the institution would be among its friends. The peo pie 01 Uxtord were all a unit in their enthusiasm for the University. The men, women and children all wanted it As an educational centre Oxford is well known. She already has two flourishing schools. The site offered are among the most desirable in Oxford. Mr. Winston closed by siying.that Oxford s bid in cash would be sealed in an envelops and delivered to the committee, to be opened when all other bids had been handed in. . Capt. 'John A. Williams, of Oxford, briefly supplemented Mr Winston's remarks and enthusiastically advocated the claims of Oxford. ' Then Rev. J. L White and M.. J. S. Carr spoke in favor of Durham; Rev. W. R. Gwaltney tor Greensboro; Messrs. W. S. Primrose and J. Daniels for Raleigh; and Dr. R. P. ' Thomas for Murtreesbcro. High Point also filed a bid. The board of trustees then went in to executive session to take action upon the offers submitted. . The following are the twenty-five trustees: Rev. W. R. Gwaltney, Greensboro; Rev. R. R. Over by, Bel cros; Rev. T. H. Pritchard, D. D , Wilmington; Rev. J. D. Hutham, D. D., Scotland Neck; Rev. R. T. Vann, Edenton; N. B. Broughton, Raleigh; Rev. R. H. Marsh, Oxford; Rev. A. G. STATE SIFTINGS. 2Vorth Carolina Items of Interest Clipped and Condensed from Exchange. Four prisoners escaped from the Durham jail yesterday. The Ne7vs- Observer and the Pro gressive Fanner are engaged in a war of words. At a point among the Saura town mountains in Stokes county, and a few miles from Piedmont Springs, it is said there is a cave which has for a long time been a source of mystery to the people of that immediate neighbor hood, and which was recently visited by a party of tourists. Lately there have been some astonishing develop ments there. A short time ago just at the hour of dawn a milky white smoke was seen ascending from the mouth of the cave. It arose for a few feet above the aperture and then crept along the ground in a long - low rolling pillar. Is preserved a well defined volume and . wertt to a distance of at least a mile before itlbegan to dissipate into the air. No heat can be felt by one who stands over the mouth of the cave and a stone thrown into it is never heard to strike bottom. The mysterious cave has ex cited the profoundest awe and wonder of everybody who has visited it. . JD . IN A GENERAL WAV. Important Happenings in Other Slates and Countries. Nellie Bly has begun her series of lectures and appeared on last Monday night in Union Square Theatre where she delivered her first lecture. She appears on the stage in the same cus tume in which she traveled around the world. A St. Louis burglar went to sleep the other night while plundering the residence of a citizen, and awoke some time later to find himself a captive. A town in which even the burglars can not keep awake during business hours Onlv makes itself riaiculous when it asks for the World's Fair. -Chicago Herald. President Harrison has issued a pro clamation throwing open for settle ment the relinquished portion of the Sioux Indian Reservation, in South Dakota. The proclamation throws open for settlement nine millions of acres of lands, which will be disposed to settlers under the provisions of the homestead law. In addition to the fees, each settler will be required to pay $1.25 per acre and upon the full payment of the money due, will be. en titled to a patent. , Preaches While Asleep. Exchange. On the plantation of Mr. Hilliery, in Edgefield county. S. C, there lives a negro who is puzzling -all the people in that section. Every' night about half an hour after he goes to bed he enters into what appears to be a trance, and preaches a sermon. He is quite illiterate, but without book and with his eyes closed, he takes a text which by reference to the Bible is found to be correct in chapter, verse and wordt ing. When in this state he is entirely oblivious of any and everything that may be going on around him, and a physician who has examined him says his arm could be taken off when these spells are on him and he would not know it. In these trance sermons he uses better language than in ordinary "" conversation, and .some nights he preaches two sermons.- Rev. B. M.-. Grees, a prominent Methodtstminister, ; vouches for the truth of the story, hav ing recently seen the man and heard him preach.
