ONE NEGKO VAN KILLS ANOTHER WITH A PORTER BOTTLE. Dick Iandi8 and Joint Young Quarrel with Fatal Regnlt--Frightful Wound --Coroner's Verdict." About 11 o'clock SaturJay night Dick Land is, a young negro man well known in the city, entered a restaurant on Main street kept by another negro man, named John Young. Landis had been drinking. The two men quarrel ed over a woman Young had in his em ployment as cook, and a fight ensued. In the melee, Young struck Landis on the head winsome weapon, felling him to die floor and crushing in his skull with a frightful wound. Young took to hisjieels, but was aptured in the woods near town Sun day morning by a pursuing party. Landis' condition was such that he could not be removed from the restau rant. He was made as comfortable as possible, and the best medical atten tion given him. He never recovered consciousness after he was struck, and died at ten o'clock last night. Crowds were collected about the restaurant all day yesterday, and many people went in to see the injured' man. The wound presented an awful sight, and several persons tainted upon seti ig it. A brcken piece of the skull, diamond-shaped and about an inch across, which had been pressing on the brains, was removed by a surgical op eration in the hope of relieving Landis, but it was without avail. Just after Landis' death, Deputy Coroner Renn summoned a jury, and the remains were viewed, after which an adjournment was had until eleven o'clock today. There were no witnesses of the fight Young's story is that Landis came into his restaurant with an open knife in his hand, and charged him, in offensive language, with having ill-treated the woman. Young succeeded in pacify ing him to some extent, and Landis put the knife in his pocket. A few minutes later, the quarrel broke out afresh. Landis grabbed Young by the collar, when the latter, picking up a heavy block porter bottle, struck the former the fatal blow. Landis, while well-behaved when sober, was quarcl some and considered dangerous when in his cups. The coroner's jury rendered the fol lowing verdict: "The deceased, Dick Landis, came to his death by ,a blow on the head with some weapon in the hands of John Young." ' Minnie Williams, the woman m the case, being unable to give bond for appearance as witness, was sent to jail. It is expected Young will be put on trial in lha Superior Court next Thurs day.
