A Nrw Orleans telegram says tha the stories of , suffering and danger of loss of life in the overflowing district are, to say the least, premature. That financial calamity has fallen upon this splendid section of Louisiana, unfor- a tunately is too true; but attempt to color it with tracedy is manifestly absurd. Thus far some stock have oeen drowned, and it is impossible to say how serious the loss to stock may be in the interior, but even now there are many who will not take the rrouble to have their stock removed though they are absolutely sure to be over taken by the rising backwater within the next few days. Ihe passenger accommodations at the O. fc C. depot are net what they should be. The waiting, rooms are small, and the approach to them along a narrow and crowded platform is de cidedly inconvenient. The combination of freight and pas senger depot does not meet the require ments of a town as large as Oxford Usually half the people waiting for trains are unable to get into the rooms. Standing outside they will wander on the tracks. There have been more than one narrow escape from serious acci dents from shifting freight cars, in the past few weeks' on this account. There is a piece of property at the junction of McClannahan street, which the railroad authorities ought to pur chase. The intelligence comes from Chatta- noga Term., that three million dollars worth of property in various towns in that vicinity has been sold in the past ten days, principally to New England people. Geo. A. Hubby, agent for the Mal lory Steamship line, at Jacksonville, Fla., it is alleged, forced Mrs. Thorp, a young widow, to, marry him by threats of bodily harm. The lady after the ceremony fainted. She has gone to her parents and refuses to live with her husband. She is a daughter of Col. E. R. Brink, formerly post master at Wilmington, N. C. At Atlanta Saturday there was a large and distinguished gathering of ex-Confederates to take part in the ex ercises of laying the cornerstone for the new Confederate Veterans' Home. A special incident of the day was the wildly enthusiastic reception given Gen. Johnston by his old soldiers.
