THE NEWS BY WIRE A FRIGHTFUL CASUALTY IN LAN CASHIRE, ENGLAND. Three Hundred and Fifty Men En tombed In tne Ruins of tne Abram Colter Works. By telegraph to The Day. New York, May 7. A, cablegram brings the news of a frightful casualty in Lancashire, Eng. This morning the Abram Colter Works were burned, and three hundred and fifty men were entombed in the ruins of the building. Rescuers are at work, and up to noon about one hundred employees had been safely, taken out. It is probable the majority of those still under the debris have been suffocated. Senator J. V. Daniel in Raleigh. Hon. John W. Daniel, . U. S. Sena tor from Virginia, is in Raleigh today. The Chronicle says he will "appear as counsel for the Lynchburg & Durham railroad in the case of E. D. Jones, et al. vs. the Board of Com missioners of Person county. The plaintiffs are tax payers of Holloway township and allege that the act. of 1887, authorizing said township and others to subscribe to capital stock of the Lynchburg & Durham railroad is unconstitutional because the tax is im posed upon property alone, and not upon polls. It is an interesting ques tion and has never been directly pass ed upon by our court. In the case "as sociated with Senator Daniel as coun sel for the defendants are E. A. Den nison, Esq., of Philadelphia, Maj. John W. Graham and W. W. Fuller, of Durham. The plaintiffs are rep resented by J. A. Long, of Graham; Graham & Winston, of Oxford; and W. W.
