T. Adams, J. F. "Cole. -Writing just before the colored peo pie's convention was held, a Raleigh correspondent of the Atlanta Constitu tion says ' "It was at first thought a resolution denouncing President Har rison would be adopted. The leaders of the movement say tonight that they have information that the President intended to treat the negroes fairly, but was misled Lv the statement of the white Republicans who went to Wash ington alter the election, and assured him that the appointment 'of negroes to any position of prominence would ruin the party in North Carolina." Are the colored voters sure that the President is not throwing sand in their eyes? Has he honored the race with aiw ''position of prominence" at Washington or in any of the States, North or South ? The bone of contention in the lower House of Congress just now is" the Compound Lard bill. The Repub licans are bent on having the bill pass ed because it will seriously cripple the t otton seed oil industry and injure the South. Cheatham protested the 'oth er day that this measure would do hurt to the colored people, but the Repub licans do not care a snap of their fin der for that. A writer in the Raleigh Signal of 21st inst., over the signature of 'Pro gress," elaborates a plan for gttting the Republican party out of the wil derness, whiclf summed up, is first to get rid of the negro, and next to slip into and get control of the Farmers' Alliance, one of which is about as plausible as the other, for the colored j brother is in about as go, d condition to kick his white broth r out of. the procession as trie white brother is to kick him out, and second, because the Alliancemen of North Carolina are not such gudgeons as to be taken in in that style.
