The subscription books of the Ox
ford Land, Improvement and Manu
facturing Company were closed yester
day evening, as announced. Now for
the allotment of lots October 8, g and
io. Excursion rates on all the trains,
and the biggest sort of a time ahead.
The posters and lithographs for
"Uncle's Darling" are up, and make
a handsome show. The first play' of
the season will attract a large audience.
Miss Hettie Bernard Chasr is a com
cdy actress of wide reputation, and she
a ill be warmly welcomed in Oxford.
The singing class of .the Oxford
Orphan Asylum left yesterday after
noon under the charge ot Miss Katie
W. Marsh, and last night gave a
concert at Henderson. They will
make, a tour of eastern North Caro
lina, and will be away for five or six
weeks.

W. S. Nelson has been engaged , to
teach the band for two, months or
more, and will start immediately after
the arrival of the instruments. He is
recommended as. a musician of high
attainments He has had "an expe
rience of ten years as . teacher, and
was leader of the Cornet Band . of Mon
roe when it won the prize at the Expo
sition. A fine band is much needed and
will infuse new life in the town. The
talent in here. Our citizens should
help the boys buy the instrument and
pay salary of the instructor. H; D.

The merchants of Belfast are making
every endeavor to place as much linen
as possible in the United States before

fect. The White Star Linen steamer,
Majestic, "which sailed from Liverpool
for New York yesterday, has one of
the largest cargoes of linen ever known
to have been shipped. Many shippers
are unable to secure freight space.
; The Raleigh Chronicle says there is
a concerted movement, which began
two years ago, for the establishment
by the State for a trarning school for
women, it receives tne nearty en
dorsement of "The King's Daugh ters, '
who are taking an active interest in it
and will memorialize the next Legis
lature to establish one on a "broad and
liberal plan.
There was danger of a financial panic
in New York Iat week, but the United
States Treasury came to the relief.
Yesterday the amount paid out on
the account of bond purchases alone
was $ 1 1,668,000, and in -addition to
this there were large prepayments of
interest on fours and sixes and heavy
payments for silver and ;on pension
account. , Fully five million was paid
out over the counter.
The Durham Globe says: The free
distribution of mail will go into effect
in this city on the first of November,
provided, of course, that the city fath
ers make the necessary arrangements
for the operation of the system. Yes
terday, an official of the postoftice de
partment went over the city with Col.
W. A. Albright,. postmaster, and divid
ed it into three carriers' districts.
All that is necessary now to get ready
to put the system in operation is to
number the houses.
