There are two circuses heading in this direction, and both will be in Raleigh during the month of October. Will either of them visit Oxford ? J M. Norwood, the cigar manufac turer, is getting up a new five cent brand. It wilt be put on the market very soon. He says it will be some thing extra good. Tomorrow is the Hebrew holiday of Yorri Kippur, and the places of busi ness ol the Isrealites of our city will be closed from sundown this evening to sundown, tomorrow. Don't forget to register. Entire new registrations this year. The books are now open, and will be closed Oc tober 25. Don't wait until the last moment. Register as soon as possi ble. The city is gay with the flaming posters and lithographs of the "Color ed Aristocracy" company, which will appear at the Opera House October 1. The Young Men's Democratic Club of Oxford met in the courthouse last night. A. A: Hicks, president, was in the chair. The attendance was not large. In fact, it was a slim crowd, and some shaqj remarks were made by several speakers about the lack of. interest manifested by the majority of r mem bers. Banks, who lives near Arrapa hoe, Pamlico county, was bitten by a rattlesnake while helping a neighbor to raise a barn a few days ago. He is very low and not. expected to live. A woman went into a Chicago drug store and asked the clerk to look at her do, which she held in her arms, and prescribe for it. One glance at the dog was enough to convince the clerk that it was mad. Two men drove the beast into a corner, where the clerk chloroformed him. bylvanus W. Pearce, a farmer ot Franklin county, was shot in the abdo men a tew days ago by William Davis, a colored boy fifteen years of age. Davis was "bound' to Pearce when seven years old and ran way three years ago. Last week he returned to " the neighborhood and Pearce laid for him and -caugnt mm. lying his arms Pearce told the boy to go with him home, when the boy managed to pull a pistol from his pocket and fire. Pearce s condition is critical. The boy is in jail. A Chicago K-Iegranv of yesterday says: A committee from the local World's Fair directory waited on the South Park Commissioners this morn ing and laid before them the request of the National Commission that Wash ington Park be included in the site for the fair. After some discussion the South Park Commissioners decided to accede to the request of the National Commission. So the vexed question of a satisfactory site is at last settled. At this afternoon's- session of the National Commission, the amended site proposition was presented and unanimously accepted. The site thus provided for includes Washington and Jackson Parks, Midway Plais ance connecting them, and taVes a front in all of about 1,000 acres. Will he Here September 25. Tobacco at' Furman granville: club. A New Social Organlzatlon-IIaitdsome Rooms to be Fitted Up. The Granville Club was organized last night at a meeting held in B. F. Kronheimer's room. It is a social organization, and the ojbect is to fit upa suite of rooms where the members can go in their leasure hours and amuse tliemselves. One room will be for reading and will be provided with the best newspapers, magazines and books; thelsecond will be used for chess, checkers, whist and like non-gambling games, and the third will be a billiard and pool room. The furnishings are to be handsome and complete. Such a club has been long needed in our city, and will have a good effect on the morals of the young men, keeping them from mischievous places and associations. t It will be a place where one can take a visiting friend and entertain him pleasantly. Liquor drinking and gambling in the rooms are to be positively prohibited. The following officers were elected ; President J. A. White. Vice-President O. S. Smoot. Secretary and treasurer H. W.
