O. F., met last night. Eggs and chickens are scarce here, and command high prices. The Mayor reports things distress ingly quiet. This is a "fine" oint of view. Scuj pernong grapes were selling on the streets today for twenty-five cents a peck. There will be theatrical entertain ments and a grand ball in Oxford the nights of October 9, 10 and 11. Rev. Messrs. Cuninggim and "Hall are working energetically to raise funds for the new M. E. station and circuit parsonages. The old Presbyterian church build ing has been torn down, and the work of erecting the handsome new edifice will be soon started. Hon. R. B Glenn will address the people on the issues of the campaign, at Sto rail, Thursday, October 2, and at Oxford that night. The rehearsals of "A Celebrated Case" are now being held nightly in the Opera House. The amateurs are making good progress. A South Boston, Va., firm of tin ners has the contract to roof the new bonded warehouse, and the workmen arrived here last evening. Lithographs, with a good portrait of Rev. Dr. Lafferty, advertising his lec ture here October 3, are to be seen in the show windows of the stores. Little colored boys play marbles all day long in the back lots, and to a late hour of the night under the elee'ric lights on some of the quiet streets. The tobacco market today was very brisk. All the warehouses had good breaks. Granville county to bacco is coming in freely now, and heavy shipments from the eastern counties continue. F, Royster came back from Ral eigh on the morning train. R. I. Rogers, of the Durham Mar ble Works, is in the city today. W. T. Clement returned from Ral eigh on the freight train last night. J. F. Woody, of the dis'trict inter nal revenue service, was in the;ity to day. Alex. Cuningham, of Cuningham, Person county, is visiting friends in Oxford. J. W. Hunt, A. A. Hicks and Dr A. J. Dalby went to Dabney this morning. J.C. Hundley is better today, we are pleased to learn, and is on the road to recovery. . J. C. Caddell, the clever correspon dent of the News-Observer, is in the city today. ' ., . C. B. Leach -went to 'Durham yes terday afternoon, and returned to' the city this morning. Mrs. W. F. Rogers and Mrs. N. Hunter went to Dabney tro attend a picnic given at that place today. C. J.Gregory is still very sick. He is an Odd Fellow, and is receiving every attention from the members of the local lodge. Miss Emma Gooch, of Durham, who was here- visiting the family of VV. K. The coinage of $i and $3 gold pieces and the 3 cent piece will be suspended at once. A pavillion has been erected for the exclusive use of North Carolina at the coming Boston Exhibit. Rev. Railroad, has moved his family to Wilmington, and will make that place his residence here after J. F. Epps, 'of Nottoway county, was yesterday nominated for Congress by, the Democratic convention of the Fburth Virginia District. This is the Yenable-Langsfon district. Grand Sire C. M. Busbee, of the National Grand Lodge of jOdd Fel lows, returned home yesterday on the f 1 o'clock train and was given a grand reception by the two lodges of this city who met him at the depot about seventy -five strong, headed by the Durham Cornet Band, says the News and Observer of this morning. It is stated that over 6,000,000 pieces of mail matter are sent to the Dead Letter Office annually, or over 20,000 pieces a day. This enormous number of miscarriages is almost whol ly due to the carelessness or forgetful ness of the senders, being caused main ly by incorrect, illegible or deficient address, insufficient postage and inse cure inclosure. . The Halifax (N. C.) Democratic County Convention yesterday adopt ed a compromise agreed upon by the executive committees of the two poli tical parties, and nominated W. E. Bowers for the Senate; W. W. H?ll, recomended by the Alliance,and A. B. 'Hill, for the House; B. I. Alsbrook, Sheriff; W. T. Parker, Treasurer; leaving Register of Deeds. Clerk of the Superior court, Coroner, and Surveyor to be nominated by the Republicans. A Clarksville, Va., correspondent of the Richmond Times says that last Saturday night some person or per sons succeeded in entering the store of W. P. Webb, and got off with over $90 in money. One $20 bill was dropped on the floor and found in the morning. It is supposed that the thief managed to secrete himself in the store before closing, as there was no appearance of violence in entering. They simply opened the door, evident ly from the inside, and walked out No clue as yet to perpetrators ot this, the boldest robbery on record in our town. A Montgomery, Ala., telegram of yesterday says : Under instructions from Chief Inspector Sharp, Inspector Booth today seized all the issue of the Birmingham Age-Herald of this date, and the issue of the -weekly Atlanta Constitution of this week, and all oth er papers coming here for this place and for distribution in this section which, upon examination, were found to contain lottery advertisements. - The officers of the Advertiser Company, of this city, were also 'required to give bond for their appearance at the No vember term of the United States Court for publishing last Sunday lot tery, advertisements, although they announced in their next issue that having learned that the law became operative at once, lottery advertise ments would not be again inserted in their columns. v Ladies Phaetons, Surries and Jump seats. Grady said last' year ot Dr. Lafferty's lecture .at the Georgia Chautauqua : ?' A more amused and interested audience never heard a more original man. When they were not laughing, they were applauding, and when they were not applauding, they were listening as if their lives were depending on what was said." Dr. Lafferty will lecture at the Opera Fouse on Friday night of next week. His subject will be, ''Progress of a Century." Of this lecture, Dr. Lafferty says : f'This is a twin broth er of the lecture delivered in Oxford three years ago, but without repeating that lecture." ' ; State Fair. The time for holding the State Fair is rapidly drawing ' near. Also the work of preparation is as rapidly go ing forward. Road Durham Globe, j :, i Last night about 8 o'clock, while the material train1 was passing through a cut nearJEno river, six or seven miles from this plac for some reason, not yet explained, the foremost ' part of the shanty car jumped the track. George Cooper, the colored cook, leaped from the car and the rear end swung around and ma-hed him against the embankment. His death was al most instantaneous. Mr.. R. E. Lee, a white man, leaped from the car at the same time, and was quite painfully injured, though not seriously. A dar key was fast asle'ep in th'e next car when the accident occurred and kpew noth ing of it. . The screams and yells half awoke him, and he rushvd to the door and jumped head foremost into a big pile of rocks. His head and face were badly bruised. ' . , John P.
