A Splendid, Vigorous and Clear Pre sentation of the Xatlonal and State 4 Issues Republican Promises vs. Republican Performance . Hon. R. B. Glenn, of Winston, is not a candidate for public office. He is a true Democrat, a patriotic North Carolinian and a good speaker, and tendered his services to the State Dem ocratic executive committee to address the voters at such places as they might elect to send him. He spoke in the. Opera House last night. , Mr. Glenn handled the tariff ques tion well, showing its inequalities, its sectional character and how under the high -protection of the Republican party the manufacturers have become powerful magnates, controlling rail roads, congressmen and presidents, shaping legislation to their own ad vantage and grinding the masses into the dust. It was classes against masses. The pretended protection to agricul tural products was a fraud, a delusion and a snare. The farmer was forced to sell in the lowest market and to buy in the highest market. One fif teenth, of the people were protected and growing richer every day, and the other fourteen-fifteenth were getting poorer every day. It was bigh time that the farmers, mechanics, lawyers, doctors, -merchants ana others com bined to protect their interests. The speaker reviewed Republican promises made in election times and Republican performances after that party was in power, une promise they have kept. They said they would -v get rid of the' one hundred million dollars surplus in the treasury and they have gotten rid of it, squandering that immense sum of money in pensioning ex-sutlers and bummers who are willing to do dirty political work for the Republicans. Very little of it goes to Southern men, and South ern men who get any of it are traitors to their section and people and can not look honest men in the face. They promised to pass the Blair Education al bill, and, although in control of Congress and the Presidency, they didn't do it. I They promised to repeal the internal revenue laws, and what have they done ? Taken two cents off the tax on manufactured tobacco, which ben efits the manufacturers and not the farmers.- The bad features of the law are. not only maintained but made worse. Farmers are allowed to sell their tobacco where and to whom they please, with this important proviso upon demand of any revenue officer they must give a full and accurate re port of all sales, and if they make a wrong statement or refuse to give in formation they can be dragged to the United States courts, fined $500 and be imprisoned. Many honest tobacco growers cannot write or keep accounts, and are threatened with a new -danger. Spies may descend upon them at any hour of the day or night. The espion age is further increased under the Conger bill, and they can poke their noses- into your lard can and see if it contains pure hog lard or iard made partly of 'cotton seed oil ; and your sugar bov.;l is liable to the same in spection under the new sujar tariff. He was fold that there was apathy J in. the Democratic tanks in Granville county: Apathy in the face of the efforts of the Republicans to capture the State L He made an impassioned appeal to men with white skins and straight hair fo arcuse themselves and to gtt to work. He drew a thrilling picture of the dark days of 1868-69, when the Republicans ail-but plunged North Carolina' in irretrievable ruin, , j - and contrasted it with the peace, pros? perity and progress under Democratic administration. His peroration was brilliant, magnificent. The audience, caught some of Mr. Glenn's vigor and enthusiasm, and he undoubtedly did good here. FRESH FROM THE PRESS.
