For some time past as many-as twelve to eighteen suicides have been reported daily. Alfred Wilkinson has consented to an interview, and said while he was averse to making any statement, such conflicting reports were sent out that he deemed it only justice, to Miss Da vis to say that the engagement was broken at her request, and that it was on accpunt of her ill health. A New York swindler entered a Fremont, Wis.,"? store, leaned his elbows heavily on the glass case and broke it through.- The owner demand ed damages, but the stranger claim ed he was strapped. Beat ty was indicted at Trenton, by the Federal grand jury in session here, for tthe fraudulent use of the mails. Mr. Beatty is a manufac turer of organs, and is charged with sending circulars through the' country offering organs at ridiculously low 'prices and after the -receipt of the money refusing to fill the order till a further sum would be . forwarded, claiming that he had run, out of the cheaper instruments. . , A pitched battle is reported from Smithville, Deland . county, Term., yesterday. At Mine Lick, near Smithville, Tom Watson had . had sev eral persons arrested for firing his barn. They were acquitted, but words ensued between the two1 factions, which soon grew into war. Both sides had plenty of followers About thirty men and women engaged in the fight. It is said that fourteen ' were wounded, two of whom may die. .. The Mine Lick crowd got the worst ot the battle. Dispatches from the interior, from Weston, Grafton, Philippi and points on the west fork of the Monongahela, Tvgart's Valley, Little Kanawha and other "tributaries of the Ohio, say that the storm reported Sunday ; night ex tended over a wide area of country. Every where the heaviest fall of rain ever known occurred, amounting to a waterspout. All streams are, swollen and traffic is entirely suspended. Great damage has been done to prop erty. Weston was - flooded and the loss will run into thousands. Another latal casualty of the. same kind occurred nearby a short "while after. , The Durham Sun says : 4About an hour after this (the Scogir.s,) acci dent the news came in that a man had been killed below the .cotton factory, in East Durham. It was true. The body of Thad Gilbert was found on the N. C. railroad track in : a terribly mangled condition. -) It is supposed he. was killed instantly; ahd, that. he. was struck by freight No. , 19, coming in from Raleigh enroute to Keysville. No definite account of this accident has been yet obtained. His wife says he started out and said he was going over to see Mrs. ScoggiuS, who had been killed not more than an hour be fore That was the Inst she saw f him until his mangled body was found upon the track."
