' ' Entered at the Post-Office at Oxford . as 'second-class mail matter. OXFORD, N. C. Friday, November 21, 1890. UXDKlt FALSE COLORS. The New York Sun sails under, false colors. It is not Democratic. It is lor high protection, a champion of the monopolists and an admirer of the bad Republican leaders. It is an implaca ble and mean enemy of the great Dem ocrat, Hon. Groyer Cleveland.. Speak er Reed and Senator Ingalls are men after Editor Dana's own heart. Of the Speaker he says : "There is no sense in .abusing Tom Reed. He is honest and he is able." Speaking of the Kansas orator, the Sun alleges : "lnere is no man in America more patriotic than he, and there is no pol itician who would scorn more than he any dishonorable transaction or any cheating device." Against this state ment of the Sun take the Senator's own words. In, a speech last winter he said : "The purification of poli tics is an iridescent dream. Govern" ment is force. Politics is a battle for supremacy. Parties are the armies, the decalogue of the golden rule have ho place in the political campaign, j The object is success. To defeat the antagonist and expel the party in pow er is the purpose. In, war it is lawful to deceive the adversary, to hire Hess-, ians, to purchase mercenaries, to mu tilate, to kill, to destroy. The com, mander who lost a battle .through the activity of his moral nature would. be the derision and jest pf history. This modern cant about the corruption of politics is fatiguing in the extreme. It proceeds from the tea-custard and. syl labub dilettanteisrn, the frivolous and desultory sentimentalism of epicenes' Holding such views Senator Ingalls is worthy of a place on the editorial staff of the Sun, , but he has no business in the upper House of Congress. Pick up a Virginia newspaper now adays, and big advertisements of land improvement companies stare you in the face. They are boomers from boom ersviile in that State. 1 Secretary of Interior Noble who is in Lincoln county - for his health, told the Charlotte News that Vance was the ablest Democrat in the Senate. Rtr, Junius T. Harris. Raleigh State Chronicle Mr. Harris was a native of Qavid son .county, the son of a. Melhod.st preacher, and was forty-six yean of age. He was left an orphan at an early age and. dependent upon his own exertions, he, became a shoemak er and made shoes at Thomasville for the Confederate soldiers until he was 16 years old. Then he enlisted in the army, surrendering with Johnson's army at BentonsviLle ,inr iS6s. He had pluck and ambition anHvwas deter mined to get an education.-His career ought to Jjq , an Jnspijation, : us every young man. ;xz;.u ' ''-Z Returning from the war, lie. took shoemaker's bench and tQQls-, andjwenj; to Trinity College.-, For five years at this seat of learning he struggled to ob tain an education, paying his ,way by mending the boots ,and shoes or- his fellow-pupils. With all this, he could, not pay all his expenses, but ?he had to go in dept. , ii;er leaving, ne.paia every cent of his indebtedness,, , At college he was a room-mate' of Rev. Frank L. Reid, D. D., who furnishes us this incident showing the "stuff" of which Mr. Harris was ma'-e. He graduated with high honors, and with in teii days after became pastor of C ry (Methodist) circuit, and haV : since served Magnolia circuity Hillsboro station, Lmcolntun circuit, Moores- ville circuit, Statisville station," and St. Paul's station in Goldsboro. He then served three years as Presiding Elder of Goldsboro District and at his death was closing out his second year as Presiding Elder of Durham District. In September last he was elected to succeed Dr. Dixon as superintendent of the Oxford Orphan Asylum. I I EE " Don't Mention the Matter. " Wilson Advance. The fuss that some people are mak ing about Vance's return to tne Senate amounts to nothing. Don't mention the matter, brethren. A large major ity of trie Legislature are pledged to vote for his return and we have not elected a set of liars as our representa tives. Any insinuation that they will hot vote for Vance is equivalent to saying to these men who have been instructed or pledged : " You are a deliberate, wilful liar and unfit to be trusted, and deserve the contempt of every decent, truth-loving man. Let us not brand our representatives in any such way. , THE TRAINS. TV.
