Folk, the leader and high place he reached and the in fluence he ielded was not the re sult of accident could not have been. He possessed the will, the ability, the character and mag netic qualities of person to lead. His hundreds of thousands o'. ioh lowers had every , confidence in him believed in him implicitly all but idolized him. He was a man with a large heart, kindly, frank and approachable. He did a great wrork in educat ing the farmers in inducing them to read more, to keep pace with the progress of the world and to think. The seed he has planted will eventually bear fruit of in calculable and lasting value. No North Carolinian since the war has attained apposition of so much power and ?uch national prominece. He is widely, sincerely mourned, and his memory will be cherished and his words and deeds treasured. was a true friend of the farmer and was doing everything in his power for their relief, and said they vvou'd riot oppose his re election; and when his name wan mentioned it was received with i applause. At the Third Party Convention in Durham on Saturday a commit tee was appointed to communicate with Hon. A. H. A. Williams and ascertain his position in regard to the St. Louis platform. If he does not stand squarely on it their pur pose, so it is reported, is to urge that a candidate for Congress be nominated on Thursday, the 16, at Durham. The new party in Gran ville expressed themselves entire ly satisfied that Capt. Williams Col..lolk said to a friend a short while before his death that he should advise against the Third Party adopting a plank favoring the government ownership of rail roads. He also said that the gov ernment ownership of the tele graph lines was more practicable. but that the country was not ready for that. Blaine was opposed to tlie force bill. That is one reason why the Southern radicals and the bitter partisans of the North did not want him to be t ominated. POLITICAL POINTERS. Epitomized from Press Despatches and Exchanges Mr. Harrison is a sectional candidate of a sectional party. He has never looked with any favor upon the South, and yin consequence the South has no great love for him. Richmond Dispatch. The vote bv which Harrison was yesterday nominated shows that it was a victory for his white stipen diaries and colored mercenaries of the South. Had the choice been left to the Northern States, he would have been badly beaten. His South ern office-holders and their obedient neirro associates pulled him through. He received 247 votes from thejate slave fctates against hi votes irora these States for all others. Thi was verv nearly half the vote that he received. Deducting these 241 votes given or controlled by! his ! Sent hern office-holders, be would have had only 288, against GIG for his opponents. Atlanta Journal. 1892 JUNE. 189i Su. lMo.lTu.iWe.iTb. Fr.
