FEB. 7th. 1912 Boys Corn Clubs. Mr. I. O. Schaub, special agent in extension work of the United States department of agriculture, connected with the A. and M. College, is sending out a partial list of the prizes to be awarded in me boys' corn club contests this year. The clubs this year will be conducted by the United States de partment of agriculture, the state de partment ot agricultural and the State Agiicultural and Mechanical College, all working together. A state prize of a free trip to Washington is offered to the boy making the largest yield at the least cost per bushel. The state department offers five cash prizes of $15 00, $12.50. $10.00 $5.00 and $2.50 each in each of ten districts into which the state is divided. This, the Fourth District is composed of the following counties: Vance, Gran ville, Durham. Franklin, Nash, Johnson, Wake, Chatham. Lee. The rules are: All members must be under 18 years of age August 1, 1912. Each boy must plant one acre of corn, doing all the work himself except that small boys may hire their land broken. No member must use more than OH WtJIUl Ul CUUimClUdl ICUUlCl. J Each member must keep a record j of his work, amount of manure and i fertilizer used and make out a report to the department. Each member must read the instruc tions sent him by the department of agriculture. The corn clubs are doing a great work in North Carolina and all over the south iu ihe development of better farming. The boy's rivalry in the corn clubs is creating a strong sentiment for ! ii ore corn. It is advertising corn, and advertising boys. Not only that but it if. lowing what can be done witt; proper methods of culture and the farmer is coming to see that it is not only better to raise more corn but to raise it as the boy does, on less ground. Mr. Schaub informs us that the average yield last year made by the members of the corn clubs, was sixty -two bushels to the acre, at a cost of 45 cents a bushel. The largest yield was 195 bushels. The average yield for the state last year was only 18.2 bushels. The good farmers are going to pull up this average. They may not be able to catch the boys but they are going to make a better show ing for themselves, if for no other rea son, then-because the boys are stimu lating them to it. Fish ing Creek Flashes. Mr. Mack Howell, of Durham, is vis iting Mr. C. L. Floyd. Mr. J. M. Clayton, of Hester, is visit ing his sisters, Mrs. Wade and Mrs. Williams. Mr. O. B. Renn, of Henderson, visi ted his mother, Mrs. A. H. Renn, dur ing the past week. Mr. Robert Currin and wife of South Carolina, visited his sister, Mrs. W. A. Sears the past week. We are sorry to learn that Mr. Geo. Hunt, Mr. Frank Brummitt and Mr. Mac Brummitt are on the sick list. Mr. N M. Cannady is in the race for county Treasurer. We think he is a good citizen well qualified for the office, and think the good people of Granville will do well to elect him. We are glad the Sunday Sch ol at Sears Academy is still growing. In spite of the cold last Sunday there was good attendance, and the singing was unusually good. THE GRADED SCHOOL. Scholarship Honor Roll for the j Month of January.
