A Good Roads Governor. North Carolina needs a good roads Governor. Good roads pay back every cent they cost and furthermore save all who use them a considerable sum of money and trouble each year. In New Hanover county the increased value of real estate and the expansion of its productive capabilities along each im proved highway have produced more revenue that will pay the interest and liquidate the county's road bonds at the time of their expiration. Thus a county's good roads represent an in vestment which creates values instead of burdening taxpayers. There may be a trifling increase in taxes for a while, but soon the increase in land values and tbe saving in time, the economy of hauling, and the minimiza tion of wear and tear on vehicles, double-discount any road tax that was ever levied, says the Morning Star. If we owned the capital at Washing ton we would wager it against the smallest court house in North Carolina that, on account of the condition of the roads in this State during the past win ter, the farmers of North Carolina lost enough to pay interest on a huge bond issue that would net-work the State with passable highways. That loss to the farmers and to the business men in the cities, towns and villages, would stagger the most extravagant statisti cian. The biggest question in North Carolina is not the election of a United States Senator. It is not the election of a Governor. It is not tariff revision. It is not the initiative, the referendum and the recall. It is not the election of President. It is not "Shall the people rule ?" It is, Shall the people get rid of the mud tax that is paid by the rich and the poor ? Good roads will elimi nate the mud tax, hence modern high ways is the biggest question in North Carolina. Good roads will increase values and opportunities in North Carolina to a greater extent than any other factor in the promotion of progress. Therefore, we want a good roads Governor. We want a Governor who will go out of of fice in 1917 with achievements so con spicuous that we will not have to scratch our heads to recall what he did out of the ordinary. Chas. B. Ay cock made a good all round Governor and besides adopted a constructive policy. He was the "E lucational Gov ernor," and that able North Carolinian so promoted the cause of education that his administration will be a bless ing to North Carolina till the crack of doom. Governors ought to do some thing just to make themselves remem bered after they have been Governor. We cannot recall all the things Aycock did when he was Governor, but there is one thing in his record that cannot be forgotten. He was the Nepoleon of Education and his marshals are still leading the forces which are vanquish ing ignorance. We want another con structive Governor who will so empha size the importance of good roads that the State will be known as the Good Roads State instead of the Tar Heel State. Network North Carolina with modern highways It will inrease val ues from the sea to the mountains, and it will do more to bring homeseekers to the State than all the political punk that could be burned in 40 campaigns. The people have long ago made up t leir minds that this is Locke Craig's time to get a showing in the guberna torial chair. It is somewhat remarka ble that public sentiment from the At lantic to the Appalachians has so chry stalized about Craig that he won't even have to leave Asheville to chase the Governorship. He got tired chasing it and so the people, with a sort of unan imous appreciation of poetic justice, are going to let him go to the State capital in a walk. They are not going to hand him any more lemons, but are going to send him to the bat and throw bouquets to him from the grandstand. That is "perfectly all right." We heart ily approve it. We do not know what else he proposes to do besides just be ing Governor, but we nominates him for Good Roads Governor. King Buggy Co.
