WEDNESDAY. OCT. 9tli. 1912 Tariff on Tobacco. If there are two things in the world that ought to be taxed by a high tariff those things are liquor and tobacco. They are absolutely non-essential ami v.e need no imports of either into this cou ntry. At present there is, we believe, a tartff duty of 89 per cent on imported laf tobacco. Notwithstanding this duy, as Mr. Sam L Rogers points our, unmanufactured tobacco to the value of $25,334,314 was imported. Yes, Senator Simmons is being crit icized because he stands for a good stiff tariff tax on imported leaf tobac co! That is one of the counts in the indictment. How long would it take the big tobacco companies to arrange to get the larger part of their leaf from abroad, were it not for the import tax levied at American custom houses? Does the American tobacco farmer need competition from abroad?. Is he getting too rich? Is he a monopoly that ought to be busted? Tobacco farmers can answer these questions for themselves. And for standing by the tobacco farmer and voting for a high tariff rate on this article of luxury which happened to be a raw material produced by his constituents Senator Simmons is be ing denounced as a "protectionists" and "out of line with his party," etc. Really, gentlemen, it is to laugh. The People Know. Charlotte Observer: The stock argu ment of the Kitchin papers is that Simmons, in securing appropriations from the Federal treasury to improve the North Carolina rivers and harbors, to dig inland waterways, to build good roads and to increase the pay of the rural mail carriers, is doing so at the expense of the taxpayers. The fact is and the people of the State know it that the money comes from the de partmental appropriations and that what little the South does get would go to the Western and New England States, but for the efforts of Senator Simmons and other Southern con gressman. The intelligent voters of the State are viewing the matter in this light and they are not to be fooled. The Kitchin organs may continue to belittle the work of Senator Simmons and to assassinate the character of an upright, honorable and influential Sen ator but the people know. Don't Want Southern Leaders The Lumberton Robesonian says, it is rather unusual for a Southern State to keep in the United States Senate a man of the ability and usefulness of Senator Simmons which may explain why some Northern papers like Colliers favor his retirement. Thev think it very unwise for a Southern State to keep a leader in the Senate they would much prefer to have all the lea ders in that body from the Northern States. That's all light from their standpoint, but by the same token it is all wrong from ours. North Carolina ought not to be content to surrender a place in the front ranks just because somebody else wants the job and some Northern papers want some Northern Senator the enviable position Senator Simmons has won.
