DID YOU KNOW that the Public ledger with its 2,500 subscribers offers the best advertising medium between the seller and the buyer in this ter "uorv. OXFORD. N. C. WEDNESDAY. OCT. 16th. 1912 To What Length Will They Go. Before the beginning of the cam paign when Governor Kitchin out lined his plan of warefare, we knew the campaign would be one out of which no good could grow to the Democratic party and we have not been mistaken. The Simmons peo ple, in self-defense, have had to p&rry thrusts. They have contented them selves with that. The situation has permitted of no attempt at the pres ervation of party harmony but the retrospect that is to be written will show that the disturbance within the party was forced by Governor Kitchin and his friends. As the election has drawn nearer, that have become only the more recklessly disregardful of the ir.t t reses of the Democracy of the State. Governor Kitchin will not only be badly defeated in his covetous de signs upon Senator Simmons' seat, but he is going to strew the State with party wreckage which the managers in the next campaign will have a sad time in assembling and putting into shape again. We want to see to what 1 ?ngth they will go in this battering up ot the household furniture of the State Democracy. It is an interesting process and we shall not be glad when the arrival of November 5 will call time on it Charlotte Observer. brow, as ,shown in his record as Gov ernor of New Jersey. 6. He stands for the revival of our merchant marine, and for the govern ment encouragement of agiiculture.in- dustrial and vocational education. 7. He trusts the people and believes that the governed should govern; and that Senators should be chosen by the people. 8. He faithfully performs in office the promises made out of office. 9. He will "Clean House" at Wash ington as he has "Cleaned House" in New Jersey. 10. He preaches and practices clean politics, and practices it effectively. He unalterably opposes machine poli tices and the rule of the bosses. 11. He stands for legitimate big bus iness every day, but for monopoly never. 12. As Senator LaFollette says, "He approaches every problem with the solemn promise to be really, in the highest sense, a servant of the people." - The following items are taken from a sketch of Mark Sullivan in "Who's Who in America ?": "Sullivan, Mark, born in Avondale, Pa , Sept. 10. 1874 Half owner of Daily Republican, Phoeuixville, Pa. Associate editor Collier's Weekly and member of Republican Club. Address 116 W. 13th Street, New York." This is the Republican fellow who attacked Senator Simmons in Collier's Weekly, which the Kitchin manager is sending over the State to try to in duce Democrats to vote against him. CO Qualified as an Expert. A correspondent from Goldsboro of the 9th says : Yesterday in the Supe rior Court of Wayne county. Judge Ferguson presiding, during the trial of a young man from the Fremont sec tion of the county, who through his counsel, E. W. Hill, had put in the plea of insanity, and had among his witnes ses to establish the mental condition of his client that excellent physician and enthusiastic Simmons Democrat, Dr. Hayes. After Mr. Hill had qualfied the doctor as an expert, and examin ed him, he turned him over to Mr. W, T. Dortch for cross examination. Mr. Dortch is also an ardent suppor ter of Senator Simmons, and after ask ing the doctor one or two questions, he fixed him with his eye, and said, "Now, Doctor, I have one more ques tion to ask you, and if you answer it correctly I will not continue my cross examination." The doctor threw him self back, grabbed his chair with one hand, and the railing in front with the other, and settled himself for an ab struse question on medical jurispru dence when Mr. Dortch asked : "Who, in your opinion, will be the next Senator from the State of North Carolina ?" Quick as a flash came the answer. "Senator F. M. Simmons." "Right you are," said Mr. Dortch. as he gracefully waved him off the stand, while court joined in the hearty laugh ter that followed.
