" c rea estate in Oxford is fully as !'-fh as in many cities of thirty or forty h rand inhabitant, and strange to ate that this has come about with Ht the special effort of any one, and, fkethe old arristccratic towns of Fay Htevilie aud Edenton, the social and i'lle for the phenomenal high values The question naturally arises as to whether we can maintain, in the face of changed conditions, the magnificent va'ues and the exalted opinion of the outside world. The rut and groove that we are running in will not permit o! any speculation The groeeryman Knows to an ounce how much meat, meal and flour will be consumed to morrow; even the hairs on our head are numbered, and the barber knows the day and the hour when we will call to have our chin sand-pappered. To ad vocate an additional grocery, a new barber shop or and individual shoe store would create confusion. This was fully demonstrated in a mild way the other morning when we called a little colored boy to brush the mud off and shine our boots. The little fellow approached us with tears in his eye, and upon inquiry we learned that his paroxysm was due to the fact that a new boy had bought a rag and a brush and opened up business on the sunny side of the street. We would not dis abuse the opinions and feelings of any one, but the time is ripe for greater things, and as confidence in our ablity todo things begets confidence in others, we beg that the gates be opened and the outside world be invited to step in and share the many blessing that an Alwise Providence has seen fit to be stow upon us. There are many schemes being discussed with a view of bringing this about, one of which is to pay an artist and a scribe of the Washington Star, a local newspaper, $250 to come here and produce an illustrated pen picture of Oxford's residential beauties and commercial activities. This would hardly produce the desired result, since "all the world ioves a lover" and everybody loves Washington City, and those who are financially able are very likely to remain in the "City of Mag nificent Distances," and the most that could be expected from such a pro cedure would be that some young fel lows from the "City Beautiful" would come down here and capture some of our pretty girls, and we object to this as strenrously as does our old friends object to issuing bonds for street im provements, yet good streets are the prime factor in maintaining our com mercial and social importance The above item of $250 would aid in meet ing the interest on a bonded debt tor street improvement One of the great causes of our slow growth is lack of organization. If the citizens of Oxford were as thoroughly aroused as to our future development as are some of the enterprising citizens of the more thrifty towns we would in a very short time reach the goal of our ambition. A dollar judiciously invest ed now means a return of two dollars in property value ten years hence. Better still, $50,000 expended on street , i:h' I'd Kill H-'iij uiuv tii- ivouuu improvements now would mean an in crease of $250,000 to real estate. There is nothing that gives as much prestage to a town as good streets; they inspire confidence as nothing else will, and as the business centre and the resi dential sections take on new life and the industrial plants multiply and the pav-rolla increase it is an inevitable fact that the rate of taxation decrease at the rate inhabitants increase. Tell us not in mournful numbers that we are barred from what we want. As citi zens we are unmindful that Nature has been very kind to Oxford; we enjoy our beautiful homes, the broad lawns and the varigated tints of the autum nal foliage, but, like the Souih Sea Is lander, we are content to plod through mud and slush to reach our abodes A united effort, a hearty handshake and a glorious smile is all that is re tired to restore confidence and place Oxford on a still higher social and com Jerchl plain. The fact is. we roust to something, and that soon, less we rr0grade. There is no money avail able for street work, and the only so lution to the problem is a bond issue. . Let us devise ways and means to 'roprove our streets aud build up our town. We are entitle to great things, and they are ours for the asking. Woodmen of the World. Mr E B. Capehart has had his resi dence in Ridley Park nicely painted. The lying is all over. Now is ihe time of shouting and eating of crow. Mr. M. L. Mascn has rented the Gregory cottage on Asylum street and moved in. It is not probably that the G. O. P. elephant will break loose and eat the straw vote. Miss Margaret Capehart won the 4th prize in the canned tomato contest at Raleigh Fair. The large amount of money our peo ple are receiving these days "should have printed on it put me in a bank instead of a tin can." "Why does a cat chase her tail ?" "I suppose it is because the cat being strictly a domestic animal, wants to make both ends meet." The ladies of the faculty of the Ox ford College will be at home to their friends in town the first Wednesday in every month from 4 to 6 o'clock in parlors in Chapel Building. "It takes money to make money" is an old saying, but the way to get the money to make more money is to open a savings account with one of the ex cellent banks of the county. Mr. J. H. Perry, of Creedmoor sec tion, captured two $35 prizes at the Raleigh Fair, one for best display of tobacco wrappers and smokers, and one for best display ot wrappers. "Tight shoes stop blood circulation and causes ill health," says a health bulletin. No doubt about it, but we have not yet arrived at that stage of good sense when even an old woman is willing to wear a shoe that is abun dantly large for her. Be sensible and cheerful, good na tured and kind. Don't worry. Keep your poise. Look troubles squarely in the face, and most of them will turn tail and run. It is worry, not work, that kills. Live right and do right and you'll be right all the time. Arrangements have been made with Mr. Frank Spencer to receive the elec tion returns at the Court House by wire this Tuesday night. Because cf the intense interest in the Senatorial and Presidential election there will be a large crowd out to hear the returns. The Public Ledger closes its humble part in the campaign in the same spirit in which it began it, "with charity for all and with malace toward none." Whoever may win today (Tuesday) all of us must liye together as neigh bors and friends, whether we be Dem ocrats or Republicans, Simmonsites or Kitchinites or Clarkites. It is a matter of pride to the people at home that Granvillians take the lead wherever they go, but it is also a mat ter of regret that they ever go; if we had at home now all the ability and energy that we have furnished other counties and states we would now have not only the largest town but the most prosperous county in the State. When the boys corn clubs prove that they can make $100 clear profit per acre in growing corn what is the value of an acre of land that can be made to do that? What is the value of the method that will accomplish this re- suit ? What is the worth of the boys ; who achieve that result and show us what can be done ? There i3 nothing on earth does a dirt road as much good as does the log drag. It is a wonder. It crowns the road, making it easy of drainage, and fills every rut and mudhole. We regret to learn that several la dies allowed the cold wave to catch some of their chrysanthemums in its grip and turn them black on the eve of the show. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Daniel, of Shady Grove section, are quite happy over the arrival of a little boy at their home which one of the neighbors named Simmons Daniel. ' The times are hard, my dear," said a man to his wife, "and I find it diffi cult to keep my nose above water" "You could easily keep your nose above water," returned the lady, if you did not keep it so often above beer." Good Prices for Tobacco. The Oxford tobacco market main tains the high averages for which it is noted. The Banner Warehouse, Mr. W. Z. Mitchell, proprietor, issued the following prizes last week : Mr. E. P. Roberts won the $25 00 prize for the highest average of 400 pounds. Mr. W. L. Currin won the $25 00 prize for the largest number of pounds sold. 4 . Carteret Literary Society. The usual weekly meeting of the Carteret Literary Society was held Friday evening, October 25 The query for discussion was, "Resolved that the county officers should be placed on a salary basis instead of a commission basis." Affirmative: Messrs Paul Daniel and William Mallone; negative: Messrs Harry Renn, Blount Bryan and William Pace. Many interesting points were brought out by both sides, but the judge decided in favor of the affirm ative. It being election night, the following officers were chosen lor the ensuing term: President, Paul Daniel; Vice-President, Lynwood Bryan; Press Reporter, Tom Pace; Toast Master, Basil Horsfield. The ofiice of secre tary will be filled later. Tar River Topics. The wedding bells will soon sound o'er lea, not far away. Mr. T. A. Land, of this section, has added a room to his dwelling, which enhances its appearance. We are having some frosts in this section these clear mornings and old Mollie Hare has begun to shake her tail in a defiant manner. Mr. W. A Moss, of this section was the first to start up the fun by a big corn husking last week, which was largely attended by old and young. We are pleased to report that the yield of corn in this section is greater than we had believed. There is a plenty for home consumption and some to spare. Mrs. Mack Bragg and son, Bernard, of Tally Ho, with Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Bragg, of this section, left here Friday morning in an automobile trip to the eastern part oi the State to visit rela tives. A Story of a Pumpkin. When the committee was getting up prizes tor the Granville County Fair we authorized them to nlace two conies of the Public Ledger on the list. Miss Zula McGhee, of Kittreli Route 2, cap tured this prize in a verv uninne wav Mr M. J. McGhee is the father of this thoughtful and industrious young lady who sheds lustre on the fame of Gran ville county. In the early spring Mr. McGhee went fourth with hoe in hand to slay the weeds near an old Dig nen. and with implement raised ahnvfi his head, ready to uproot the weeds, a gentle voice at his side said, "Wait a moment, father." It was the voice of his daughter, Miss Zula, and she was pleading for the life of a tender little plant which was almost hidden from view among the rank growth of dock and jimson weeds The tiny plant was so young and tender that Zula or her father could not determine what it was, but in defference to the wishes of his daugher Mr McGbee cleared the weeds from around the little plant and dismissed the incident from his mind, believing it a mere whim of his daugh ter. Meanwhile Miss Zula gave it her attention and it soon became a running vine, large enough to determine that it belonged to the sugar pumpkin fam- y. but not until it was in bloom did Mr. McGhee condecend to notice it. The vine put fourth fruit to the amount of two hundred and some odd pounds. The largest pumpkin, which weighed 48 pounds, was exhibited at the Gran ville County Fair and won a blue rib bon. This speaks well for the fertility of Granville couuty soil. The current market price for pumpkins in New York at this season of the year is not less than two cents per pound. Thus it will be seen what the little waste places will do when well directed at tention is given to them. An Interesting Service. Rev. S. K. Phillips, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, has been in Ox ford only about seven months, yet by h;s earnest and sincere work he has inspired the love of his congregation and brought them together in a most effective manner, and by the close of the fiscal year the church records will make interesting reading. Rev. Phillips is a deep student, a logical and fluent speaker and seldom refers to his notes. After a fight of oratory Mr. Phillips is accustomed to place his arms on the sacred desk and in a conversational tone of voice presses his point When his face becomes animated in dis cussion he resembles in gesture the late and much loved Dr. Moses D. Hoge. Reverend Phillips was possibly heard at his best at the evening hour last Sunday, on the subject of "Paul Be fore Agrippa," as laid down in the twenty-sixth chapter of Acts. The church was well filled and the congre gation was impressed with the vigor ous manner in which the speaker pro pounded this most interesting passage of scripture. Reverend Phillips has left nothing undone that would add to the upbuil ingof his Church, and the congregation is to be congratulated on its splendid choir, which was recently augmented. Miss Lucy Webb presides at the organ, and there are a dozen or more voices well adapted to sacred music Mr. Pardo, who is connected with the Caro lina Power and Light Company, with headquarters in Oxford, is now a member of the choir. He possesses a melodi us tenor voice of great power and pathos.and it is doubt fal that his equal can be found in the State. Our fine young friend, Eugene Crew?, of the road, rolled in Monday night af ter an absence of several months in the South in the interest of the Taylor Cannady Buggy Co. and his friends are extending him the glad hand. Automobile Burned. An automobile party from Chapel Hill that attended a Wood ro w Wilson rally in that county Friday night relate the harrowing experience of having to flee for the safety of their lives from their machine which caught fire while they were endeavoring to release the car from a mudhole in the road. The origin of the fire which destroyed the machine is contributed to a lantern used in seeing how to prize the auto mobile out of the mud The party consisted of five people and included Judge A. W. Graham, of Oxford. We are told that the blaze sprung up and in a second enveloped the who!e car. The entire party gave chase and had to cover several yards for safety. Thus it can be said that Judge Graham came neir loosing his life in defence of his choice of the Baltimore Convention, Woodrow Wilson, whom he labored so hard to nominate and elect. We enjoyed a brief in spection of this celebrated Farm and the courtesies and hospitality of Mr. Kimball and his family, and our hearts beat with pride at the sight of so much eiegance and granduer within the confines of Granyilie county. Higher Doctor's Bills. There is trouble ahead for all those in Granville county who will need the services of a doctors as the physicians met in Oxford Monday and resolved to advance the price of visits and other professional services. We have not as yet heard of the scale of prices adopted. The doctors present from the county were: Drs. J. F. San derford, of Creedmoor; J. A. Morris, of Wilton; O. W. Holloway accompanied by Mrs. Holloway, of Northside; B. W. Bullock, of Hester; P. R. Hardee, of Stem ; E. B. Meadows, of Culbreth.and W. L. Taylor, of Stovall.
