DID YOU KNOW that the Public Ledger with its 2.SC0 subscribers offers the best advertising medium between the seller and the buyer in this territory. OXFORD. N. C. WEDNESDAY. NOV. 20th. 1912. It is said that.High Point has 28 can did ate 3 for the postmastership. The official count shows that Sena tor Simmons' vote 21.255 was over both candidates. Number of votes cast in the primary were 148,031. President Taft is going to get busy and hand out all the pie he can before March 4ih. He will fill every possible vacancy with Republicans so as to prevent Wilson from putting Demo crats in The Democrats object to this, but it is the natural thing for a Repub lican President to do. The purifications of politics may be an iridescent dream, as the brilliant I avails once declared, but the people of North Carolina are fair and honest and they are demanding that the men thy elect to fill the public offices sh.-jll be careful in speech and servants of the people. Directors and bosses are losing their places in our land of the free. Henderson Gold Leaf. The' Henderson Gold Leaf is now issued twice a week, and from its im proved appearance tHe citizens of the hustling little city of Henderson can but feel proud of the change from a weekly to a semi-weekly, which brings them in closer touch with passing events' and at the same time reveals the thrift and energy of the people of their city as nothing else will, unless it is a daily, and if the business men will give "Mr. Way his way" they will soon have it. In the opinion of the Washington Herald, Mr, Bryan does not seek a cabinet appointment ' and would not accept it if tendered to him "The Her ald savs, "Of course.Mr.Bryan does not want a cabinet position. Thrice candi date for the Presidency, and with a lingering hope that even yet his am bition may be realized. Mr. Bryan probably regards a cabinet office as be neath his dignity. : The Cotton Crop. It is estimated that the probable to tal production of 4,800.000 bales of cotton in Texas this approximately 4.800,000 bales had been ginned up to November 1st. The picking of the re mainder of the crop will be nearly over by December 1st unless work is inter fered with by bad weather. On this estimate of the total yield at an aver age price of approximately $60 a bale, including the sale of the seed the far mers will realize a total of $290,000,000 . Hope it Will Be. It is said that the next North Caro lina Legislature will deal largely with -ways and means of improving the pub lic roads of the State. There will be numerous plans presented for the con sideration of the lawmakers, and they all should be given careful attention and the best one enacted into law. The next Legislature could do nothing better than to go down in histnrv known as the "Good Roads Legisla ture" For Six Months School. The determination of the legislative committee of North Carolina Teachers Assembly to press upon the next Leg islature the matter of a specific State tax of 5 cents on the $100 property valuation, for a fund with which to as sure to all public schools in the State six months instead of four months min imum school terms, is stirring consid erable discussion of the State's finan ces. It is estimated that the proposed five-cent tax will raise about $458,000 and this is about the amount that it is figured will be required to give the 6 months minimum, including the $375, 000 that the State now gives to the schools out of the general fund All the Honor Possible. The Salisbury Post, which supported Gov. Kitchin, says it has no respect for the sentiment which would defeat Senator Simmons for position of honor and leadership in the Senate. Being a Democrat, and a North Carolina Democrat at that, we hope to see him get all the honor possible out of his ad vantageous position on the most im portant committee in the Senate. The Post wants to see the party make good m every particular, and we would re joice to see our own Senator occupying high places m bringing about the re lief the party is committed to. As the Chairman of the Finance Committee Mr. Simmons would have splendid op portunity to promote the party's good. and be of incalculable aid in bringing it to a full and complete fulfilment of its pledges. Brown, of Statesville, and Wheeler Martin, of Raleigh; two United States marshal ships and deputy marshalships galore, and all sorts of smaller jobs under Uncle . Sam. Every . first, second and third-class postmaster in North Caro lina will give way to a Democrat. Becoming a Corn State. North Carolina is becoming a corn State. This shows progress along right lines. It shows, too, that the campaign of education that has been carried on to promote corn growing is having its effect. North Carolina had in corn last year nearly 200,000 acres more than she had in 1910, and 400,000 more than she had in 1910. If this rate of increase keeps up for a few more years and with it the general improvements in cultivation methods will soon maintain corn cribs at home, and then will come the smokehouse also. J. Fresh air, good food and the proper care of ..he body are es sential to a recovery, but in many eases something else is needed. Eekman's Al terative is a medicine which has been most successful in stopping night sweats reducing fever and promoting appetite' and many who have used it, declare it saved their lives. Investigate what it did in this case: " . ... "Gentlemen: For four" years I was troubled- with cough, which gradually became ' worse ; I had night sweats and pains in my chest. I was losing my ap petite and had become so thin and weak -I could not attend to my household du ties. A physician pronounced my case Consumption. Not being satisfied, I was examined by the physicians of the Poly clinic Hospital. They also pronounced the disease Consumption, which watf proven later by an examination of spu tum, as Tuberculosis Bacilli were found I was ordered to a Consumptive Hos pital. My nephew would not allow me to go until I had tried Eekman's Alter ative. Before I had taken the medicine three weeks -I had marked relief, night sweats ceased, pain in the breast re lieved, ugh became loose and easy fever left me and I commenced getting well.
