At Mother's Knee Said President John Quincy Adams on a public occasion: "There are two prayers that 1 love to say the v first is the Lord's Prayer, and because the Lord taught it; and the other is what seems to be a child's prayer, 'Now I lay me down to sleep; and I love to say that be cause it suits me. I have been re peating it every night for many years past, and I say it yet, and I expect to say it my last night on earth if I am conscious." Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep; If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. All this I ask for Jesus sake. Amen. How familiar these words! We all learned them in childhood. They were taught us at mother's knee. With closed eyes, upturned face and folded hands we repeated them. They formed our first pray er. O, the simplicity of that child like trust! We prayed, we slept. God's good angels stood guard throughout the night and woman hood followed the precious dust to its last resting place, but the spirit! returned to God who gave it. But all through the years there has re mained the memory of the prayer mother taught: "Now I lay me down to sleep." A year ago a well-known Metho dist pastor of Vermont was taken to the hospital at Troy, N. Y., for a critical surgical operation. Be fore the anaesthetic was administer ed, the Christian surgeon said to him: Dr. W , have you anything to sav before we begin?. Taken by surprise, the clergyman, knowing not what to answer, folded his hands, closed his eyes and repeated the prayer learned at his mother's knee: M Now L lay me down to sleep." There followed the anx ious hours of "sleep," but, as in childhood days. God, the keeper was faithful, and with the morn ing's dawn there was "light and hope. May we, with John Quincy Adams, not oe ashamed of the "mother's prayer," but useiteven our last night on the earth. , Statement to the Public It is impossible in the manage, ment of any business as complicat ed as a fair not to have errors and mistakes creep in. We ask that those who have been subjected to such, or have what they consider a just grievance against the officer, let it be kown, and if possible we will make amend. Even in getting out the premiums mistakes may be made. There have, been such every year. Call us up and let us correct the errors.. The association has nothing but the best of intentions in its treat ment of the people of the county and the conflicts and clashes that inevitably result from the collision of ideas and interests are apparent ly necessarily associated with the growth of such movements. In thanking those who have con tributed to the success of the fair it would be impossible to make a complete list. There have been too many helpers to undertake to pub lish the names. We wish to thank the newspapers of the county for their constant help and the wide publicity given before and after A & Mi I III - & Jr.' Mi a the dates of the fair. The ladies of the town gave freely of their time in arranging the exhibits and assisting in the management of the various departments. 'The tele phone and water companies both gave free service and deserve the thanks of the association and the people of the county. The mer chants and other business men of the county offered their support in the gifts of premiums and in other ways of service. Those of Oxford should especially be thanked for closing their stores on one of the days to enable the employees to at tend the fair. J. F. WEBB, Secretary.
