Pursuant to a call of the Oxford Town Democratic Executive Commit tee about two hundred of the quali fied voters of the town participated in the Convention held in the Court House Friday night. In perfecting a permanent organi zation, Dr. B. K. Hays, of the Execu tive Committee, stated the object of the meeting and called attention to , the prescribed rule of the Democratic party, that Democrats only were en titled to vote in the Convention. General B. S. Royster was called to the chair and Messrs. John R. Hall and D. A. Coble were named as sec retaries of the Convention, On taking the chair, General Roy ster spoke of the importance of selec ting good men; that it makes no dif ference what the laws are they r should be strictly enforced; that if we are faithful to duty and to the obligation we owe to society the of . ficers will have no trouble in enforc ing the laws. . THE NOMINEES. Mr. Ben K. Lassiter in a neat speech placed Capt. Thad G. Stem in ; nomination for mayor, which was i. seconded by Mr. John W- Hester.who spoke of the sterling worth of Capt. I Stem as an executive and a citizen. F There being no opposition Mayor ; Stem was declared the choice of the Convention. There were repeated calls for him to come to the front ..and talk, but if he was in the Court room at the time he preferred to wait until the new Board had been ' selected before addressing the Con '. vention. - The following were placed in nom ination for Commissioners in the or der named: C. D. Ray, A. H. Powell, W. A. McFarland, Thornton W. Yan cey, W. Z. Mitchell, W- C. Bryan, W. H- Hunt, R. S. Usry, W. A. Parham. The vote was taken by ballot, Sena tor A. A. Hicks, W. W. With a " feeling of v gratitude for ' services ; faithfully, rendered, Senator Hicks ,t1Tenmded . the- Convention .that 'xnes-,"oia 1 Moara may not nave pleased everybody, they were f aith- ful to duty; that they performed much work -during their administra tion and that not a single word about graft was ever heard during their in cumbency. GOOD GOVERNMENT ASSURED In taking the floor to thank the Convention for nominating him, Mayor Stem pledged good govern ment without eqivocation or evasion, so far as it lays in his power. There is no compromise with the illegal traific in whiskey. He says that it must stop. He said that if he can stop the nefarious business he would feel that he had been successful in office, and that if he could not stop it he would feel that he was a failure in ofiice. It must be remembered . that the Legislature gave Mayor Stem more latitude than he had here tofore to apprehend and punish vio lators of the prohibitory laws. He asked that the new Board and the citizens in general give him their earnest support to the ends that the laws may be informed. .HARMONIOUS MEETING It was easily seen on the faces of every one that they had met for the purpose of selecting good men to serve the best interests of the town. General Royster was placed in nomi nation for Commissioner, but he stat ed to the Convention that he could not serve. Complimentary voters for commissioner were given Messrs. B. F. Taylor, 2; Sizemore, Williams, Calvert, Pete Wood, C. H. Easton.B- K. Lassiter and M. P. Chamblee, one each. . EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE The chair named the following to serve on the" Democratic Executive Committee for the ensuing year: Dr. B. K. Hays, Chairman; Major Will Landis and Senator A. A. Hicks. SIDE REMARKS While there was not the semblance of ginger in the Convention, there was a little fun. Some one asked General Royster, the chairman, how many times a fellow could vote in the Convention. The General replied that it depended altogether upon who the fellow is. "If he is a one-legged man," said the General, "he is en titled to one vote as such, but if he will attach his wooden leg he can cast two votes in this Convention while I am Chairman." - There was some fun at Mayor Stem's expense. He had stood be fore the bar off and on for two weeks and in taking the floor he addressed the Chair as "Your Honor". Later on in his remarks he said "Gentle men of the jury, this thing must stop." We merely state this to show that there is some fun in a Democratic Convention, and where there is fun there is harmony, and where there is harmony there is very apt to be good government. LIVE STOCK ASSOCIATION. County Organizations to Be Merged. The new issue of the North Caro lina Farmers Bulletin says that plans are under consideration to make all county Live Stock Associa tions and their members subsidiary to the State organizations, thus be coming a mutual organization much more effectual financially and strong er through increased membership. Steps will be considered at the next annual -meeting to perfect such an organization. The officers of . the Granville County Live Stock Associa tion are: R. C. Bullock, President, Stem; H. P. Webb, Vive-President, Stem; J. A. Morris, Secretary-Treas-urej, Oxford. The Public Ledger is an admirer of all good children. We like to see them disport themselves in the open air. We stood for them at a critical time, when many were complaining about their skating on the new gran- olithic sidewalks. So anxious were we for them to make merry and en joy themselves that we consulted Mayor Stem and urged him to take the lid off and let young America ex ercise their expanding limbs. - The ordinance in part was recinded and the children were permitted to skate on the sidewalks in certain parts of the town. We were glad that they had been granted the privilege and went so far as to suppress a half-dozen grouchy communications from old rheumatics. While we were doing all this for the children . we knew that "children were children." We knew that they would hitch up in one-two-three order and "pop the whip;" we knew that a few of the larger children would make themsel ves obnoxious, but we stood for the sport and were willing to sidestep when we saw them coming down the streets in sets of twos and threes; wre thought that everybody, young and old, were enjoying the sport.But the tide is turning and it threatens to sweep the children, little tots and all, from the sidewalks. We shall be sorry to see them peeping out through the windows at a time when they should be out in the open air. We have heard many complain lately Knowing that we were standing manfully for the children.a good man took us by the arm the other night and led us up College street to see the sport. We made up our mind that we were going, to stand for the new-fangled sport even if a child should trip ul up; so up College street we went arm in arm with pur friend. We "met two pretty little girls on skates. Their cheeks were aglow. They ran right into us. There was a smile on their little up turned faces as they pushed us aside with a "pardon please." We contin ued on up the street and enjoyed the sport immensely, but finally our heart was saddened. We heard a large boy use a curse word; we heard a large girl yell to an elderly lady to get out of her way. We made up our mind then and there that the lid must be fastened down on young America. How is the best way to do it without working a hardship on the little children? We can think of several ways to right matters. If parent., would see :thatCtheir.pwn children behaved themselves as well as other parent's children behave, and grumble less, we believe that the trouble ""would subside to. some extent, We are standing for the children, but something must be done. We trust that . they will be given another chance to . "make good" before Mayor Stem tacks up the sign: "No skating permitted on the sidewalks of Oxford." How cruel the words sound, but we rather expect that pressure will be brought to bebar against the children. Let the children themselves consider this well. SONGS AND RECITATIONS The Sunbeams Shine in Song and Recitations. At the Baptist church on Sunday night the Sunbeam Band gave a very delightful programe consisting of songs and Missionary recitations. A large and appreciative audience greeted the children and gave them an attentive hearing. Fifty child ren took part in the exercises deserv es special mention for the spirit and enthusiasm with which they rendered their parts, The collection which was taken was about $17.00. This money will be used in educating a Chinese child in a Christian school. The managers of this Band, Misses Mary Royal and Ethel Hancock and Miss Sallie Webb, deserve much credit for the faithful training they are giving these children- They should have the support andjjBo-oper-ation of all the parents. OUR MINISTERS They are Sowing Seeds and Saving Souls in a Quiet Way. The pastors in Oxford may not have the gift of job- to excite as many people as is credited' to Billy Sunday, but they are going right along planting seed and saving souls They are working for the Master.but if they took it unto themselves to lower their high calling, we are sure they would be as successful as Bily and his likes. RAILROAD MAGNATE DEAD Col. A- B. Andrews, Vice-President Southern Railway Succumbs to Brief Illness. Col. A. B. Andrews, first vice-president of the Southern Railway, died Saturday night at his home in Ral eigh after a brief illness, at the age of 74. Colone 1 Andrews was born in Franklin county. North Carolina, July 2 3, 1841, and received only a common school education. He en tered the Confederate army as sec ond lieutenant. First North aCrolina Cavalry, wasw ounded twice and was a captain at the close of the war. After that he engaged in railroad work and in 1869 was superintend ent of the Raleigh & Gaston Railway, which afterwards was converted into part of the Seaboard. It is estimat ed that his estate will be about half a million dollars. Oxford Represented A hearty welcome awaits all guests at the thir teenth annual convention of the Fed eration of Women's Clubs to be held in Goldsboro from May 4 to 7 inclu sive. The federation has now reach ed such a state of growth and devel opment that it means a really influ ential force in the State, and this meeting is the director of that force. In all probability Mrs. A. H. Powell, President of the Oxford Woman's Civic Club, will attend. The old town was thrown into ex citement Friday afternoon, the like of which is seldom witnessed here. A well known Granville man drove up to the Court House and informed Sheriff Hobgood that he saw a drunken man laying beside a disabl ed automobile in the public highway some few miles northwest of Oxford. It was explained that there were sev eral kegs of whiskey in the automo bile exposed to the naked eye. The sheriff got busy. An auto mobile was secured and he and a half dozen trusted men made a dash in the direction of Satterwhite Shops On reaching a point some few miles north of Oxford they met a suspici ous looking automobile on the highway, occupied by two men and driven at a rapid rate. The first thought that entered the mind of the Sheriff was the tactics employed by Hobson in the bay of Santiago, and instantly his car was maneuvered so as to block the highway. With drawn pistols, and their fingers tick ling the triggers, the sheriff and his men surraunded the two red beak- birds blown in by the north .wind. Beneatn a blanket thrown care lessly across the car were found sev eral kegs of whiskey. "All aboard, we have them," shouted the Sheriff, and on to town they came. On reaching the Court House the two men were rushed into the Sheriff's office, and . during the preliminary trial great throngs surged about the old temple of justice, unable to get a glimpse of the two distinguished visitors. With the air of a man deeply of fended, but not afraid of the final outcome, they called for legal advice, Mr. B. K. Lassiter was retained by the liquor men, and upon request the Sheriff cleared the room pending the arrival of Justice Buchannan, who heard the case. FIXING THE BOND On inquiry as to their identity the tall swarthy man gave the name of "L. P. Pendergrass," and the short, red face fellow said his name was "P. D. Carrington." In arguing for his clients, Mr. Lassiter held that the men were in transit from one state to another through our State, and as such were common carriers,, citing the railways as an example. Senator A. A. Hicks was brought into the case.and in arguing for the State he pointed out the fact that the men were not common car riers; that , they were .violators and were, amendable :to thev law. Iiu fix ing the bond, Mr. Lassiter indulged in a little sharp practice, offering the automobile and whiskey as collater al. "Why, bless goodness, said Mr. Hicks, "the car and the whiskey are already the property of the State." The bond for the two men was fin ally, fixed by Justice Buchanan at $4 00 each. In ansAver to a telegram fired to Durham it was learned that Pendergrass was "Mr. Pendergrass, a feed merchant worth $30,000." It would appear at this distince that several people in Durham were ready to fall over each other to go on. his bond, and his back did not touch the walls of the little brick castle back of the Court House; but the other man, poor P. D. Carrington, slumber ed there over night, only to emerge victorious the following morning on the arrival' of "Mr. Pendergras," the stake-holder. TWELVE KEGS OF LIQUOR The automobile containing the whiskey is "No 7182 N. C." It was pushed down in front of the jail where the task of unloading the whiskey began. Twelve five-gallon kegs were unearthed beneath, a lot of litter, and they were carted into the dungeon , followed by eighteen bottles of beer and a big black gal lon bottle with a lopse fitting cork, ready to serve on short notice. We noticed on the head of one of the kegs, the origin and destination of the whiskey marked in plain letters, "From Virgilina, Va., to The Barron Drug Company, Bennetts, S. C. Evi- dentally they had some faith m the common carrier theory,' but it did not work in Oxford. RUMORS , The disabled automobile which the Sheriff and his men started out to capture lay only a half mile beyond the point where they captured Pen dergrass and Carrington. The dis abled car, it is said, was repaired by an Oxford man, and that it passed through negro town along toward the shank of evening. The theory has been advanced that the car which Sheriff Hobgood captured, came along and found the disabled car and its owner laying drunk upon the ground, loaded the kegs on to th'Sir ear. j It tias reached our eat3 that this I man Pendergiass does r great c'eal of hauling passengers and supplies between Durham and Chape! INTO THE GUTTERS The twelve kegs of whiskey now in the custody of Sheriff Hobgood will be held until court. The judge i very apt to order it turned into the gutters! As the automobile comes under the new law which went into effect the first of April, we are not fully advised as to its disposition. ' The elimination of flits and the filth from which they breed is most- essential and vital. Yet there are people, sub stantial citizens, .who are bitterly op posed to any sort of an ordinance Their opposition s based solely upon the fact that they own" stock or main tain stables, whseh will ' have to be cleaned up.. The judges decided unani mously in favor of the negative. B. THE INTERNATIONAL LESSON Strong Men and Children Moved by the Shepherd's Psalm. It has been a long time since the Sunday Schools enjoyed such a spirit ual awakening as it did last Sunday when the Iniornatio-ial Lesson was under review. There are few, if any, passages in the Scriptures - that ap peal to the soul of man as the Shep herd's Psalm.We sat in a class com posed t-f more than one hundred and fifty strong men. Nearly every one had committed the six verses of the Psalm to memory. -" WTien General Royster had expounded and brought the class to a high conception of the lesson, the momentary stillness was broken by the class repeating in uni on the XXIII Psalm: LESSON TEXT. 1. Surely goodness and, mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Liora forever. PERMANENT ORGANIZATION Of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew at St. Stephen's . Church. Last Sunday afternoon the tem porary organization of the Brother hood of St. Andrew was made per manent by. ten of St. Stephen Episco pal churches most earnest and enthu siastic young men,' which elected the following officers: A. C. Mellichampe, director; H. F. Lee, vice-director; W. A. Adams,' Secretary; J. H. White, Treasurer. The Brotherhood has done a very good work already, but it is now settling down to do a more better work than ever before, and it is one of St. Stephen's parishes best assets. : The Brotherhood also at this meet ing took over the directing of Sun day school and elected A. H.. Taylor, superintendent; J. B. Shaw, Secre tary and W. ' B. Taylor, treasurer. The men's Bible Class which was or ganized a short time ago by the Brotherhood and is a part of the Sunday School is ? proving to be a great success, ; under the teaching of their vejy able teacher Mr. B. The new stock for the purpose of adding a race track at the Fair Grounds has not yet reached the twelve hundred dollar mark. requir ed for the improvement, says Serce. tary Crews. ( This is a most worthy undertak ing. The Public Ledger has repeat edly gone to record as favoring the race track, feature. It will broaden the possibility cf the Fair; it will en courage stock raising. Every mer chant and citizen of Oxford, who can possibly afford it, should at least own a share of new stock. Secretary Crews' efforts to raise the money for the land is not restricted to Oxford. He will make an excursion to the far mers and try to get them interested. We hope he will be entirely success ful in the laudable undertaking Twelve hundred dollars is a lot of money just at present, but it does appear that the amount could easily be raised, among a thrifty people. A County Fair without a race track is largely "handicapped. It is the, very best kind of a feature. BANK DEPOSITS Some of the Hidden Money Reaching the Banks. It would appear from a letter in evidence that some of the hidden money is finding its way -to the banks. One of our local bankers re ceived a deposit of $64 from an out of town customer the other day. In the letter to the banker the new cus tomer stated that it was his custom to hide his money, and pled as an excuse his ignorance of banking bus iness. "I send this money," he said, "with fear and trembling." He told the banker to be very careful and see that the figures were plain in credit book. He cautioned the banker hot to let any one have the money unless he was very certain that the check was signed by the depositor. He stated that his greatest fear was that some . one would hear that he had placed the money in the bank and would try to get it out. He asked the banker if it would do any good for him to send his photograph, so if any one tried to draw his money the banker could have the offender ar rested. -' This man was not aware that the banks of Oxford held hundreds of thousands of the people's money; that the money is under , the supervision of the United States ,, government ; that sphere is no danger of any. one getting bis -inonejr Dy v iorgmgv a check. But he is on the right road. Hundreds of good honest men lose their money by not putting it in the bank. They lose interest; they run the risk of being robbed and maybe killed; they stand in their own light, and all because they do not inform themselves and understand as they could understand that a bank ( is as safe as any place in the world. NOBLE TYPE OP WOMANHOOD It is a Splendid Augury for the Town's -Destiny. There is a good reason why Ox ford is a place with a sprucy individ uality and a cheering atmosphere of growth and development. It is Ox- ford's boast that she has a splendid type, of women the home-loving, home-making, alive and inspiring type. They have several women's clubs, literary, historic and civic. They are intelligent and energized with modern ideas and methods, but in no instance have we noticed a force of radical nature, such as the "Equal Suffrage League," but even that has strong grounds for exis tance. These good -women, those of the clubs and the home are a need ful supplementary force in the pro gress and development of Oxford and are vital factors in the communi ty morale and in the tone and stand ard of Oxf ord s religious, society, and civic life. All of this counts in the progress of Oxford and it is a splendid augury of the town's des tiny. THE CORN CLUB WINNERS The Sum of $450 is Being Distribut ed to the Lucky Boys. . T. E. Browne, in charge of the boys' corn club work in North Caro lina, has just sent out vouchers to the winners in the 1914 corn contest. The vouchers totaled $450 which sum is the gift of the North Carolina Board of Agriculture to the lucky boys. There are ten . districts in North Carolina, and to each one of them will go $45.00 to the winners The prizes are $15, $12.50, $10, $5, $2-50. Dudley Hall, the champion of North Carolina, will receive a free scholarship to A. and M. College, There are numerous other local and county prizes which the winning boys will receive for their labors. The agents state there is a grow ing interest among the boys in their search for the scientific facts regard ing corn growing and other farm-ink- Thev prizes, the workers say, help to stimulate rivalry, but are not' the chief aim of the boys when they are working their crop. Another thing which the boys are doing besides replenishing their own coffers and enlarging their knowl edge is teaching their fathers how the art of progressive farming is car ried on. Many farmers are outclass ed by their sons, and this fact makes the elders work harder to make good yields. That this year will be a success ful one is the prediction of Mr. Browne, who has watched the corn club work ever since " it began in North Carolina. The crop will be a little late in getting started, but will have time enough to matnre. The youth's have their s seed selected, and are ready to plant and begin cultivation- The membership is now climb ing towards thev3,000 mark, and it is thought that it will reach the coveted goal before fall. " 'T" ' - , Miss Lela. King who has been visit ing her sister, Mrs." J. B. Shaw, re turned to her home at Gold Rock Monday. The "Streamlet of Doubt" Has Been' Discovered in the Southwestern Part of Granville County. We stated some time ago that the waters of Granville county found its way into four rivers namely the Dan, the Roanoke, the Tar and the Neuse. In consulting the United States map we find several counties shed ding their waters into two rivers, a few into three and none excepting our own Granville into four rivers. We recently met our old friend Major Tom Booth, one of. the best posted men geographically in the county, and he pointed to . the fact that Granville sheds its water into 5 rivers, adding to the above list that of Flat - river. On consulting the State map we discovered a small streamlet in the southwestern part of Granville that appears to trickle into Flat river. Possibly this Is the stream to which Major Tom refers. It is so indistinct on the map we ask pardon for referring to it as the "Srteamlet of Doubt." The Public Ledger should like to settle this question for once and, all. If it is a fact that Granville county is drained into five rivers we have, a valuable asset unequalled in the United States. We are positively sure that no other county on the North American Continent sheds its waters into five rivers. We shall gladly give a free sub scription to the Public Ledger to any one who will point out a county any where, in the United States that has five rivers for its watershed, ex cepting our dear old Granville. Granville has the finest bright leaf tobacco in the world. Can it be pos sible that this fact can be attributed to the remarkable drainage of the county? Certainly, drainage counts for health. The womanhood of Gran ville, and some of the men, are the finest in the world. Can this be at tributed to the absolute perfect drainage of the county? FALSE REPORT There is no Evidence of a Gambling Den in Oxford. We place no credence whatever in the" report that there is a lot of gambling, going on in Oxford. We haYdu jiade.a;diilgent siBquiries-iaiand out of season and fail to find any evi dence of a gambler's den. For fear their might be a stumbling block somewhere along the road, we would remind our young men that there is no surer method of crushing their manhood than to become a victim of the gambling spirit. It is worse than idleness, worse than drinking and worse than many other crimes. It is father to almost every vice and crime known to civilized man-It leads down down down. It saps moral courage from the promising; makes cowards of the brave; it breeds dis contentment; destroys confidence. It will transform an honest boy, with a bright future, into a sneak, a liar, a rogue. .It is a terrible thing, and every one who has followed gambling knows these words are true. We plead with the young men every where who may chance to read these lines, for the sake of their country, their family, their friends and them selves, to quit it, short off. If they must dance to the music of the devil, let it be to some other tune than that of gambling. It grieves us to hear of bright young men with promising futures going after this delusive something that makes sure of its vic tims. They have the stuff in them to make men; they have the intelli gence, the manhood and the energy, and they can make real men if they will only exercise their will power and become masters of themselves. NOTED LEADERS COMING Hon. John G. Woolly and Geo. W. Morrow, D. D. Two of the most noted leaders of the Anti-Saloon forces in America will speak at the Oxford Methodist church at 8 p. m. this Wednesday evening. Prayer meeting in all the churches will be postponed so that a hearty welcome will .be given the noted lecturers, Hon. John G. Wool ly and Geo. W. Morrow, both of nat ional repute. All are cordially in vited to attend the meeting. FROM KINTON FORK Baraca-Philathea Meet Base Ball and Address By Mr. Parham (Communicated.) The Hester's Baraca-Philatheas will meet at Sunset high school Sat urday, April 24th, the Baraca's will organize a debating society, while the Philatheas will re-organize their mis sionary society. Everybody invited to take part whether a member of any Sunday school or not. The picnic at Kinton Fork Satur day was enjoyed very much by all at tendants. Owng to the bad weather the crowd was smalled than expect ed. Mr. Parham, a prominent law yer of Oxford delivered a very inter taining address. Base ball between Penny Hill and Kinton Fork was 10 to 11 in favor of Penny Hill. Mr. Barnes won a five pound box of can dy for the best runner in athletic ex ercises. - There has been right much guano brought to this section. Wheat is not looking well, Most of the county schools have closed and the teachers departed for their homes. ' PERSONAL. MENTION. Mr. S. L. Lloyd is recovering from a spell of sickness. Hays, Health Officer)' If it were seriously . proposed to place an annual tax of one hund red thousand dollars upon Granville county for some public improvement, . such as the building of roads or the establishment of schools, the matter would call forth considerable discus sion. There would occur newspaper articles, public gatherings, debates, roadside arguments and a flood of talk both pro and con. . - If now a scheme is proposed . by means of which Granville County can save one hundred thousand dollars each year, and if the scheme has the least semblance of being practicable, is it not worth the. serious consider ation of every tax payer . in the county. ' I desire to present such a scheme and earnestly request the co-operation of every citizen who wishes to save the county money. Here is a scheme. Sickness costs this county two hun dred thousand dollars every year. One half of this sickness is unneces sary. Stop the unnecessary sickness and you save the county the money. In making the 'estimate of two hundred thousand dollars per year for sickness no account is taken of the unnecessary deaths. These un necessary deaths are left out of con sideration "because they are largely of infants and of old people. Since infants and old people are not wage earners it is impossibble to put a monetary value upon their heads. Death rates are estimated at so many per thousand population. For example, the average city death rate for whites in the United States is six teen per thousand population while the average city death rate for blacks is twenty five per thousand population. If now we regard six teen deaths per thousand population as the normal death rate, and if a certain class of citizens have a death' rate of twenty five, then that class is losing nine persons ' per thousand population every year from unnec essary deaths.' It Is possible to -reduce . a' death rate to ten per thousand population. A third item of ex pense is the time lost in nursing the sick or the actual money paid out to nurses. The chief cost of sickness, however, is the time lost from work by the people who are themselves sick. It is estimated that one forti eth of the time of the total popula tion is given up to sickness. This means that there are six hundred and twenty five sicK people in the county all the time. Putting the average time of men, women and children at about fifty cents per day we have a total of ore hundred and fifteen thousand dollars from loss of time. The following estimate sums up the entire cost: Medical attention ..." .$ 45,000 Drugs (including patent med icines) 25,000 Time and cost of nursing. . 15,000 Time lost by sickness ..... 115,000 Total $200,000 If the above estimate is accepted as even remotely approximating the truth it remains to be shown that one half of this disease is prevent abble and therefore unnecessary. TUBERCULOSIS Tuberculosis has been called "the captain of , the messengers of death". It kills more people than any other one disease. It causes one seventh of all the deaths of this country. On an average six thousand people in North Carolina, fifty people in Gran ville county and ten people in the town of Oxford die of tuberculosis every year. It kills one out of every three people who die between, twenty and fifty years of age. One half the inmates of the American hospitals are suffering with this disease. And yet it is entirely preventable. Nine out of every ten cases are due direct ly to the spitting habit. If people would spit only in places where, they knew the sputa would be destroyed it would immediately recult in the sav ing of forty-five lives in Granville county every year. I will have more to say upon this subject at another time. ffYPHOID FEVER. , Typhoid fever is one of the great scourges of civilized man. Just as the poison from a tubercular patient is found in his sputa so is the poison of a typhoid fever patient found in the fecal discharges. Many people continue to discharge typhoid germs long years after recovery from the disease. Such people are called "ty phoid carriers." So numerous are these "typhoid carriers" that all hu man excreta should be regarded as a possible source of typhoid infection. Typhoid fever germs find their way from the discharges of one person to the mouth of another by means of flies, water, food and dirty hands. Typhoid fever is a preventable dis ease.. Where human excreta is pro perly disposed of, flies excluded, drinking water properly guarded and clean food oaten with clean hands there is no typhoid fever. Vaccina tion against typhoid fever is now re garded as a sure means of prevent ing the disease. Whooping cough, which has claim ed more than a -score of victims in this county since the first of this year,, is a preventable disease.
