Durham county has arranged a plan by which .tax delinquents can pay their taxes before the next ses sion of court. A big seven-ton tarvia distributor is at work on the streets of Raleigh that are macadamized, giving them a good coating of this oil. Greensboro , will have Spanish taught in-dthe high school the coming session, and Mrs. Jobita Thompson, of High Point, will be the teacher. The Home Telephone and Tele graph Company, of Greenville, has just completed one of the handsom est buildings of the kind in the State. James Bryan, a colored man, of Raleigh, was seen by a neighbor walking about in the home of Mr. J. F. Stanback in the absence of the owner. The negro was captured by three men in the neighborhood and held until the' arrival of the police. He explained that he was hungry and .was serchCng for food. Building is going on in Henderson on a large scale a number of resi dences going up. The Episcopalians are building a large and handsome brick parish house. Elizebeth City can now show her visitors who arrive by rail a spic and span modern station, and an auto hack service that rivals that of cities many time its size. $ Janator Thompson of the new court house in Raleigh has been given power by the Commissioners to pro secute any one found injuring the building in any way whatever. Agent W. H. Chamblee will soon inaugurate a thorough canvass in Wake county to induce farmers to cultivate winter crops, which are so valuable from every standpoint to the farmer. Mr.T. B. Parker, Director of Far mers' Institutes in North Carolina, has gone to California, where he will attend the National Association of Farmers' Institute Directors. Dr. Joseph Hyde Pratt, State Ge ologist, states that the permanent marking of the boundry line between North Carolina and Tennesssee will be completed within the next month. Jones county has voted overwhelm ingly aga'inst the stock law. The advocates of the law think the peo ple did not thoroughly understand it, and hope for another election at some future date. The dates set for the first fair ever held in Gaston County are October 12, 13, 14, and 15. About $2,000 has been appropriated for premiums for the live stock, poultry and agri cultural departments. The State's militia as seen at Camp Glenn was in fine form, much progress being made during the last year. The militia now enjoys the distinction of having attained the highest State of efficiency since the Spanish-American war. Bion H. Butler, in writing for the News and Observer of the Pan-American dinner at Greensboro, declares that North Caraolina has come to the forks of the road and must accept the challenge to join in the great work or stand back in indifference. At Goose Creek and Florence in Pamlico County there are two schools that run in the summer time. This change in the time of the school term was made to suit the conven ience of the pupils, who at other sea sons have work to do that must be done. An unusual case is reported from a convict camp in Guilford county. A negro convict named Stuart ended his life by drinking disinfeceting fluid and eating soap. Mr.- David son, in charge of the camp, says that this negro hated work so much that it was the one and only reason he ended his life. A thorough investigation of the Wadesboro Silk Mill by the State Board of Health shows there was no foundation for the rumors of un healthfulness at the mill. On the contrary Dr. L. B. McBrayer, of the State Board of Health, says he finds conditions in the silk mill very nearly perfect. Martin Rickman and Miss Myrtle Pressley, the pretty sixteen-year-old daughter- of Joe Pressley, of Arden, Buncombe county, were arrested Sat urday for blackmailing D. M. Lance and members of his family. The warrant charges that Miss Pressley and Rickman sent threatening letters to Mr. Lance with the intention of extorting money from him. Commissioner of Agriculture W. A. Graham has issued a statement pointing out that the Board of Agri culture has no connection with the boys' patrol, this having been put under the direction of the Farm Dem onstrator, Mr. C. R.
