THE ARTIST AND HER HIRE The New York World Says She 'is, Or Any Other During the controversy that" raged in New York last February regard ing the compensation paid Geraldine Farrar at the Metropolitan Opera House, the subject was thought to be worthy by the New York World of an editorial article in which it fully justified Miss Farrar's oft-repeated contention that the artist is worthy of her hire and that an artist should be allowed to make during his of her comparatively brief career as much money as possible, all the more so as in this country there is no system of pensions as there is in Europe which will keep the artist in old age. The world commenting said: "Miss Farrar feels that she .is en titled to receive in the renlaining years of her public service all she can get, and a few will dissent from her opinion. - Art is, to be sure, vastly superior to money, and the unrec ognized artist always has the conso lation of working for his ideal. But Miss Farrar is a recognized artist and while holding her ideals, she is jus tified in demanding a large share of what the public is willing to pay ti what the public is willing to pay to any provision for remuneration in the future for what she is now, she must make her hay while her sun is shining. In our inhserent 'national inability to establish a theater for art alone we must make the best of what we have. Inevitable, in a commer cial theater, artists must be prac tical." The whole State is interested in Miss Farrar's appearance in Raleigh on January 24th. She will be pres ented, with assisting artists, by -the Rotary Club of Raleigh. The seat sale will open on January 19. UGH! ACH STOMACH, SOURNESS, HEARTBURN GAS OR INDIGESTION The Moment "Pape's Diapepsin" Reaches the Stomach All Distress Goes. .
