FOR RE-ELECTION : WOOD R OW W I LS 0 N THEY KNOW HIM The people of North Carolina have accomplished wonders in the past 20 years in an educational, agricultural and commercial way. Practically all of this has been done utnder Demo cratic Administration. With Marion Butler and his crowd at the head of things in this State, there is no tell ing what idsaster might follow; but, thank heaven, the people of North Carolina know Butler, atnd there is no chance in the world for Republi can success. nroDOsed and is now pending. Of course the currency act, the tariff law and the revision of the anti7trust law will come in for full explanation. In connectiotn with the tariff the Demo crats will lay particular stress upon the suggestions made by the Depart ment of Commerce for anti-dumping legislation and the recommendation of President Wilson that Congress provide for a tariff commission. Fol lowing the lead of President Wilson the Democrats are making extrava gant claims for the proposed Tariff Commission. Provision will be made for the creation of this Commission in the omnibus legislation which the leaders in the House now intend to report the latter part of next month. Included in this omnibus bill will be the measure providing for increased internal revenue taxes to make up the deficit in the Treasury caused by the falling off in customs revenues and the increased expenditures for "preparedness." Nobody will care to dispute with a Boston infidel who is not qualified to substantiate his guesswork with proof, says the Wil mington Star. A man can fool him self with an idea till he thinks he is actually qualified authority on some thing he does not know a thing about. If it were left to a banker, he would prefer to lend money to a man who has convictions on the affirmative side of the question. BACKING THE PRESIDENT The Senate and House conference committees have given the country the kifld of an army bill that Presi dent Wilson has been calling for. He has stood firm for an army of 250, 000. The conference provision is for a standing army of 206,000 fighting men, capable of being expanded into 254,000. The wisdom of this action is manifest to those who have made a study of the situation of the coun try and the emergencies it may have to face. Congress is giving manifes tation of the fact that it is with the President 'ji the preparedness plans, as this agreement on the army bill plainly indicates. CAMPAIGN PLANS It seems to be the understanding in Washington that President Wilson will go before the country in an ap peal for the support of the business element on his legislative record. It may be all right in this day and time for the President to tour the coun try, but to our humble way of think ing we would much prefer for him to remain at the seat of government and send out strong men to proclaim the gospel. The special correspon dent of the New York Journal of Commerce gives what purports to be an outline of the Democratic plans, which are said to embrace three fea tures. First, the Democrats will de mand recognition of the merits of the foreign policies of the present Admin istration. That appeal will be made upon the record made in the dealings with the European belligerents and the attitude toward Mexico. In the second place, the Democrats will point to the record of the party in re forming politics. The popular elec tion of Senators and other measures will be brought up for discussion in that connection. The appeal to the business interests, however, will com prise the third feature of the general campaign for votes. In this connec tion the Democrats intend to refer to the policies of their party as reflected in the legislation which has been en acted by Congress and which has been KINTON FORK NEWS ITEMS (Correspondence Public Ledger) Dr. R.
