Tobacco Buyer for Liggett & Myres Tobacco Company. 0ne of the prominent men in the tobacco business in Oxford is Mr. J. M. Farrish. He is a native of Cas well county, North Carolina, and spent the first few years of his life on the farm in that section of the State. Since leaving the farm he has been in several sections of the country in the interest of the tobacco business in which he has been en gaged. He first went to Cuba and bought tobacco there seven years. The three years following his stay in Cuba he was stationed at Tampa, Florida. After leaving Florida he spent several years at different places in North Carolin and Virginia. For the last five years he has been in Ox ford and is at present buying for the Liggett. & Myres Tobacco Company, he having been with that company since its formation. Mr. Farrish, since his arrival at Oxford five years ago, has won the favor of the busi ness men, the tobacco men especially, and for the last two years has served a? the popular president of the To bacco Board of Trade of this, place, he being the successor of Col. W. B. Ballou. M. C. TAYLOR A. Hustling Young Groceryman With Growing Business Among the young men who were raised in Oxford and arejictWi-actively engaged in business here is Mr. M. C. Taylor. He has made Oxford his home practically all the time since his birth in 1886 and his residence here has made him known as one of the town's progressive young men. llr. Taylor attended Horner Military School for five years and graduated from that institution in 1904. He then went to Davidso'n. College where he completed his education. After leaving college he came to his' home in Oxford and entered business where he has remained until the 6- jlK-y " j nil e THOMAS ' '- -. A Leading Citizen and Successful Business Man. . Mr. L Thomas has been one of Oxford's leading citizens for many years, having been occupied ia both the newspaper work v and the mer cantile business during his residence here. He is a native of Bertie coun ty, born there in 1854. Mr. Thomas spent the first few. years of his "life on the farm in that county, but when a young man he left the farm and since that time has been engaged in different business enterprises. In 1878 he came to Oxford as printer and local editor of the Oxford Torch Light which at that time' was the Granville county paper. Mr. Thomas remained' on the staff of that paper for several years after which he en tered the mercantile business and for the last twelve years he has been one C D. RAY. i A Town Commissioner and Leading Lumber Dealer. . . For thirty-two years Mr. C. D. Ray has been qne of Oxford's live busi ness men and most progressive citi zens. He was born in Franklin county and made it his home until about twenty-one years old. In the meantime he attended the prepara tory schools and Wake Forest Col lege, after which he taught school fcur'months and then settled in Ox ford where he has lived most of the time since. His first years in Oxford were spent in the tobacco business, serving as boot-keeper and assistant buyer for the American Tobacco Co. He then bought tobacco Jor the same company four years, two years on the Roxboro market and the Kinston market. Mr. Ray returned from president. Finding the confinement of the position too JJever he cank out of the bank and went back into the tobacco business. In the mean time he was conducting a lumber business which soon required his full time, therefore he quit the tobacco business-and for the last ten years has been operating a lumber yard and also has been a dealer of coal. For the last three years Mr. Ray has been operating the business with his son under the name of C. D. Ray & Son. Mr. Ray is a member of the present board of town commissioners and for a while served as a trustee of the Oxford Graded School. WM. BAILEY. Local Superintendent Carolina Power & Light Company. He is not a North Carolinian by birth but has spent half of his life in tjiis State. He was born in Micamopy, Florida, where he lived for several years. When ready to enter collge he came to North Carolina, and took a course in electricity at the A. & M. College' j at Raleigh. After graduating from I that institution he accepted a position i with the Carolina JPower & Llgjit Co. and has been in its. employment ever i since. He was first located at Ral eigh, then at Goldsboro,, and. from there went to Cheraw, ; South Caro lina. Last May when Mr. Lee, the former superintendent of he local office, was promoted to Goldsboro, the company, promoted, Mr. Bailey to the Oxford office, of which he is at present superintendent. The man who lives'up to his ildeals isn't- necessarily a high flier. of Oxford's leading and progressive merchants. Mr. Thomas has never sought any public office and as he says never held any except that of overseer of the public ' road, but he has been one of Oxford's wide-awake citizens, always interested in the things that pertained to the upbuild ing of the town. J. M. BAIKD ' A Quarter of Century in Mercantile Business in Oxford Among the men in Oxford who have been in business here a longer time than most of the people is Mr. J. M. Baird. For twenty-five years he has been connected with the. mer cantile business, his choice work be ing that 'of selling hardware. During this time he has been in the grocery .business and is noted for keeping one of the most sanitary, stores of its kind in town. The first ten or twelve years of his stay here was spent in the employment of Mr. J. F. Edwards who was in the hardware business. He then, with Mr. M. P. Chamblee, bought the stock of Mr. Edwards and conducted a business of his own. Mr. Baird continued a member of the firm, Baird & Cham blee, and when a year or two ago the Acme Hardware Co. was organized he remained a member of the com pany. During his residence in Ox ford he has been a successful busi ness man and also a man who has contributed to the progress of the town. , -y .
