Napoleon and the Kaiser By C. L. Hinton I think since this war in Europe we can form a better estimate of the character of the great Napoleon, for we are brought face to face with somewhat of the conditions that ex isted during the days when this little Corsican tried to fasten his yoke on Europe. Now another has risen up, like Na Doleon aiminc at world-wide con quest. All the wars of the past have dwindled into insignificance by the side of this one, brought on by thirst for power and glory; and the loss of life and property, the disruption of institutions seemingly built on the firmest foundation, is such as to stag ger the wildest imagination. This colossal figure has conducted a war as barbarous as that carried on by Attila, "the scourage of God," hes itating at nothing to carry out his aims, until he has aroused the world against him. He has been denounced in Infinitude, and his fall has been decided on. The peace of the world demands that this menace shall be removed, and when this war is ended, and there shall be a Congress of the Nations to settle boundary lines, and fix indemnities, I believe that they will send this mighty disturber of the peace to the same rocky island where Napoleon was kept a prisoner, where he can try to atone for the ruin his ambition has brought to the world. What must be his remorse when he thinks of the blood of his brave young men that has been shed in vain, of the misery that he has visited on millions of once happy homes in his own fatherland and those of the nations he fought against! Who had not rather be the commonest la borer in his empire than this incarna tion of blood and murder? The same mighty obstacle is in the path of the Kaiser's world wide con quest as stood in the way "of Napoleon England and her powerful fleet. jNapoieon would prooaDiy nave suc ceeded but for the dogged persistence and determination of the little island that finally proved his downfall and sent him to St. Helena and the Kais er would have won this war but for the same power he did not count on being against him. St. Helena, sea girt and lonely, with powerful men of war preventing es cape, looms up in the distance, and what better place could be found for a sanguinary murderer of his race to spend the last of his days in an en deavor to expiate a past that was given not for uplift and peaceful pro gress, but for the misery of his fel low beings. CoUeife" St. Oxford, N.C North Carolina Was Big Manufactur er of Fine Writing and News paper. (Milton News) The present shortage of paper calte to the mind of the present editor of The Milton News that North Carolina was once a big manufacturer of all kinds of paper. For more than 50 years, all the pa per used in Milton and this section of North Carolina and Virginia was manufactured by T. W. Askew, at the Falls of Neuse River, about six miles from Raleigh, and hauled here in wagons, and well does this editor remember the first of the month dur ing the '70s, when we used to hitch up the big four-horse wagon at Wil son and start for a trip to the paper mill, 50 miles away. It was a fine trip and we got a much better grade of paper than anybody, can buy today j for anywhere near the same money. (Now if the great American Paper Company- the trust will disprove this statement, we will publicly with draw our public charge that it is ex torting money from paper buyers and users, and that the same is in re straint of trade.) For a great many years large quantities of as good wrapping paper and paper twine as has ever been made in the whole wide world, was made at Wilmington. So far as we know, there is now only one paper mill in all North Car olina, and that one is located at Can ton in the extreme western part of the state, and we are told that the trust owns it. We do not seek unnecessary or un called for notoriety, but the state ment in parenthesis above is literally true, and if the paper investigating committee in session in Washington needs evidence to clinch this charge, all they need to do is to call the editor The Milton News before it, and they'll get it good and plenty, for he is tired of being robbed by the paper trust. How to Give Good Advice The best way to give good advice is to set a good example. Pershing's recent visit to El Valle there was an apparent northward movement of American expeditionary croops from that point. The reports added that there are indications of plans to withdraw all American troops south of Colonia Dublan to field headquarters there.
