Blackberries Although the frost
ha nipped the vine in this section,
jr W. L- Peace is enjoying large,
iucious blackberries every day. He
fathered a handful from the vines at
the south end of Hancock street Wed
nedav morning and brought them to
the Public Ledger office, and they
were as fine as any we have seen this
year. 4.
Fooled Again The Public Ledger
learns that a number of farmers in
the extreme Northern part of Gran
ville visited the South Boston mar
ket last week in hopes of getting
irore for the weed than is paid in
Oxford. One of the farmers who visit
ed South Boston told the Public Led
ger that he is convinced that Oxford
is the strongest market in the whole
country.
The Second Crop Second growth
June apples in October is something
not often seen. But we have on our
desk two perefct specimens of the
second growth that matured in the
orchard of Mr. H. J. Council on Gil
liam street. The apples are fully up
to the standard in size and are some
what firmer and more sipid than the
first growth.
Fully Organized The Democratic
campaign may be said to be fully
open now in Granville. The county
has been fully organized, and the ac
tivities of party workers 'will be kept
up from now until election day. The
thorough organization of the county
has discouraged the Republicans and
they are not nearly so jubilant as
they were some weeks ago. But Dem
ocrats must not be content to rest on
what they have already done. "Keep
ing everlastingly at it brings success."

county, to address the meeting of the
combined woman's auxiliaries in
Rev. B. R. Lacy, Jr.'s field. Mr.
Phillips will return to Oxford in time
to fill his pulpit Sunday.
The Public Ledger was honored
one day this week with a visit of our
old friend,. Mr. T. L. Fuller and his
grandson, Master Raymond Mat
thews, of Watkins section. Raymond
had long desired to visit the Public
Ledger office and see with his own
eyes a newspaper in the making. He
is a bright little fellow and acquired
in a few minutes valuable informa
tion that will serve him well.
Dr. Shamburger, a former pastor
of the Oxford Methodist church, now
pastor of the Weldon church, was a
great admirer of the late Rial Brou
ghton, and it was indeed fitting that
he came to Oxford and eulogized the
noble deeds of the deceased.
Food Throughout Country Sells' at
Prices Highest Since Days of
Civil War.-N
Marked increase in the cost of liv
ing is shown in the rising tendency
in the price of foodstuffs on October
1, reports of which are just being re
ceived at the Department of Agricul
ture from the principal markets of
the country.
With flour selling at higher prices
than at any time since the Civil War,
due principally to the shortage of the
crop this year, the cost of potatoes is
increasing.
Meat prices continue to advance,
with prices showing almost twenty-
four percent over what was paid a
year ago. Butter, eggs, ana cheese
all are selling for higher prices at
this time of the year than what they
were last year, and beans show an
increase over a year ago because of
the short crop.
Prices paid to producers of farm
products increased 9.3 percent dur
ing August, while during the past 8
years these commodities have shown
a decrease.
Potatoes were seling 116 percent
higher than a year ago.
Big Increase in New York
Comparison of retail prices for sta
pie articles of food asked on local
markets today, as against prices for
the same commodities one year ago,
show increases averaging from 40 to
100 percent with ;some articles rang
ing as high as 500 percent.

. .The Titles "The Liturgy" "The Divine Liturgy" anciently de
scribed "the Sacrament of the Altar. In the Eastern Church to
day, the received title of the Service is "The Divine Liturgy.
"Liturgy" is now so commonly, and so incorrectly used to de
scribe any kind of a precomposed form of Prayers: as "Liturgical
Services" "Liturgical Churches" that its true meaning, signifying
only the Office of the Eucharist, is lost beyond recall. "Liturgy"
was first used in a religious sense in the Septuagint (a Greek trans
lation of the Hebrew Scriptures) where it. described the Divine Ser
vice of the Tabernacle and Temple, thence it was taken into the
New Testament to mean spiritual ministration, . especially the Eu
charist. Act XIII: 2. literally, "As they liturgized (offered the Eu
charist) to the Lord" "The Divine Service" used so much by the
early English Church, is a translation of "The Divine Litourgy."

Adam Smith Said It

Adam Smith said in the Wealth ol
Nations:
A man must live by his work and:
his wages be at least sufficient to sus
tain him. They must be ven more
on occasions; otherwise it would be
impossible for him to bring up a
family, and the race of such work
men would not last beyond the first
