LYON Riddick Inaugurated Wallace Carl Rididck became the fourth president of the North Caro lina College of Agriculture and Me chanic Arts Friday in a simple ceremony befitting the character of such an institution of which he is the first highly specialized head. Mr. Garrett Tells His Experience. The f olowing brief account of an interview with an Oxford man over five years ago, and its sequel, will be read with keen interest by every citi zen. . ' J. L. The wholesale price of potatoes advanced to $3.25 a bushel at River head, N. Y., Monday. Caltolina School News Our community Service League which was organized some time ago has been visited by Mr. Crosby Exe cutive Secretary of the State Com munity Service League. Mr. Crosby made a fine adrdess on community work and our people were very much enthused over the work which was laid out for us this year. We are planning for our school to cultivate a crop of tobacco this year for the purpose of extending our school for the next term and for the beautifying of the school grounds. The crop will be cultivated under the supervision of the County Demon strator. Notwithstanding the bad weather we have had a very good attendance in our school, all the children in the district have been enrolled excepting one or two. Relief is Now in Sight Many empty cars rolled west at passenger train speed last week from congested railroad yards of the east, according .to Interstate Commerce Commission advices from its field force of investigators. Fair weather and a holiday combined gave the roads the first real opportunity in more than a week to exert their max imum energies to relieve the car shortage that has threatened near famine in some sections of the country. CITIES SUFFER FOR FOOD Nation AVide Movement to Grapple With the Food Crisis Officials all over the United States have begun marshaling their forces in an effort .to solve the serious food situation. The American Railway Associa- 4 tion has ordered individual lines ' to give especal consideration to egh teen cties where the crisis is acute. , In New York where the first food riots developed, Mayor Mitch el has ordered a complete survey of prices and stocks, as well as the actual living conditon of the poorer classees to determine the ex act facts of the situation. To aid housewives, a daily bul letin will be published, advising what foods should not be pur-: chased owng to the prices, and suggesting nourishing substitutes at lower cost.
