The many friends of Mrs. Maurice

hear that she is slowly improving.
She has been seriously ill for the

already proven herself to be very
efficient.
A Blue Ribbon Manager
Mr. E. H. Spray, formerly of
Guilford county, now the manager of
the Kimball farms, was in Oxford
this week. Stock,' grain and cotton

Relaxing His Muscles
Mr. Robert Critcher the splendid
farmer in the western reserve of
Granville, was in Oxford a few hours
Wednesday. It is a well known, fact
that Mr. Critcher is one of the most
industrious farmers of the county and
it is always a pleasure to see. him in
Oxford relaxing his muscles for a few
hours.
Looking Backward
We find in the Charlotte Observ

produced from its files ten years ago:
"Mrs. E. w. Thompson will entertain
a number of her freindjs on the porch
of her Dilworth home this morning
in honor of Mesdames AdeleJWalker,
of Columbia, S. C, and Hilman Can

It will be of interest to those who
generously responded to the call
made by Mrs. H. G. Cooper, chair
man of Oxford Unit Woman's Com
mittee Council of National Defense
and gave vegetables, fruits, cans,
money or services to the Food Con
servation and Home-Economics De
partment to be canned and dispens
ed later for Home Relief, to know
that this committee was able thereby
to put up one hundred and twenty
cans of apples, soup mixture and to
matoes last Tuesday morntng, besides
drying one peck of butter beans.
Enough money was also contributed
to pay for the cans used and the coni
mittee is indebted to the Jeffreys
Myres Company for" the fuel used.
Mrs. A. L. Capehart, who is Coun
ty Chairman of Food Conservation
and Hbme Economics, furnished the
canning outfit and directed the work
and gave valuable aid, and a large
number of women, several young
girls and boys assisted in the work of
preparing and canning the food.
So much interest is felt in the
work of this department of the Wom
an's Defense work and he results of
this experiment so gratifying, that
the committee from the town and
county have volunteered their ser
vices for the remaining Tuesday
mornings throughout this month.
All who are interested in this
worthy cause will please send vege
tables or fruits to the new Graded
School grounds, early Tuesday morn
ing not later than 9 o'clock.
Those who have vegetables to give,
but have no way to get them to the
school .grounds will kindly notify
Mrs. A. H. Powell, County Chariman,
by Monday afternoon and arrange
ments will be made to call for them.
The committee will be most grate
ful for cooperation from the other
county units as. well as from the Ox
ford unit. .
The food will be canned and stor
ed and dispensed by the two units
through the County and Town Com
mittees of Home Relief, Woman's
Committee Council of National De
fense. .
Several ladies have offered their
services to help take care of the food
contributed on Tuesday morning, but
if there-are others 'who can help,
their services will be greatly appre
ciated. MRS. A. H. POWELL,

CHANGE IN OXFORD LIBRARY.
STORING UP SUPPLIES
Another Canning and Drying "Bee"
. Next Tuesday Morning
The women of Oxford have entered
into the work of home defense under
the direction of Mrs H. G. Cooper,
chairman, with the zest- and energy
for which they are noted. - .- .
The first practical thing to be. done
was 10 start a siure nouse and get
busy about filling it with canned
. and dried vegetables and fruits. This
means that a place has been reserv
ed in the Red Cross rooms at the
Brown building, for storing away ev
erything in .the nature of food which
can be kept until winter and which
will be used in the interest of home
relief. As was stated in the last is
sue of the Public Ledger, Mrs. Cape
hart has offered her canning outfit
which is how in the old Cooper res
idence, the new graded school build
ing, for the use of any charitable or
ganization. This was used on Tues
day last, by the ladies of the Home
Defense Unit, who volunteered their
services, with the result that one
hundred and twelve . quart cans of
"eatables" were prepared and stored
away. The food stuff was contribut
ed by the house keepers of Oxford
from the overflow of their- own gar
dens and fruits trees will respond
to the call for contributions
each week, and a few ladies
who are skilled in the art of canning
and drying will give a few hours of
their time and labor, the result will
be largely worth while and most
gratifying to the committee in
charge. If anyone has extra cans,
jars, etc., to spare these will also be
acceptable. On next Tuesday morn
ing at the same place, there will be
another canning and drying "bee"
and all who can help in the cause in
to do so.

Hereafter Opened Only on Tuesday
and Saturday Mornings.
After this week the Oxford Library
will be opened to its patrons, only
twice each week, Tuesday and Satur
day mornings, from 10 to 12:30.
' The reasons for this change are,
that for one cause or another, many
of the regular subscribers have not
renewed v their subscriptions and tne
income to the Library is not sufficient
to meet the monthly expenses of li
brarian fee, rent and incidentals.
The committe regrets to make this
announcement, but there seems no
other way to meet the present situa
tion, and in order to accomodate
those who have renewed. Members
of the committee have offered to give
thir services free on the two morn
ings above named. We trust that this
arrangement will not greatly incon
venience any . one and that the sub
scribers who have paid will willingly
submit to this temporary abridge
ment in the service. 1

Prominent Visitors.
The Philatheas of the Methodist
church were indeed fortunate on last
Sunday morning in having two splen
did addresses from prominent lead
ers of the Baraca-Philathea move
ment. . After a prayer by the pastprf R,ev.
R. H. Willis, the entire hour of the
Sunday school was given to Miss Lola
Long, President of North Carolina
Philatheas, and Mr. J. Edward Allen,
Chairman of State Executive Com
mittee. Miss Long spoke of the organized
class movement as a training camp
for spiritual preparedness and urged
all Philatheas should respond to this
call.
Mr. Allen gave a splendid inter
pretation of the Sunday school les
son, bringing out the good and bad
qualities in Manasseh showing God's
power in the reformation of a human
being.
A delegation from the Baptist
church and the Junior Philatheas of
the Methodist dhurch were also vis
itors and enjoyed these enthusiastic
and inspiring speeches.
THE STATE FAIR
Held at Raleigh October 15th to 20th

The great North Carolina State

a copy of which will be furnished on

offered in premiums designed for
the promotion of agriculture and
horticulture, stock raising, etc., both
in the way of production and conser

Fairs of the country are one of the
greatest agencies in his hands for
teaching and preaching these doc
trines. This fair is co-operating
hear and soul with Mr. Hoover and
isdoing a great work. It is the duty,
of every patriotic nian and woman
in this strenuous war time to co-operate
with and nelp every agency that
is for the economic welfare of our
country, and Mr. Hoover says that
this Fair and the other State Fairs
are ofincalcuable value to him.
Mathias Erzberger says that
peace might be reached in an hour

George. Reason to. believe that the
same end might be reached in . five
minutes could somebody get- hold of
the Kaiser's Adam's apple.

TENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY .
The symbolism of the divisions of the Church building is in
structive. It is divided into three distinct and symbolic parts.
The: Nave, where the congregation sits, represents this present
world. The part from the steps to the ChanceLrail, represents the
intermediate State, wherein the dead await the Judgement; it is '
barred by ther Rood Screen, emblematic of the Gate of Paradise.
The third part , within the Chancel. ral with the Altar, etc. repre
sents Heaven, place of Holy Mysteries. Often the Church is built
in the shape of a Cross Sometimes the Chancel is built slightly
awry to represent the Agony of the Saviour on the Cross. We are
careful not; to speak of "audiences" as that only implies hearers;
we say "congregation" or better "Worshippers." The "long drawn .
aisle" is to melt the worshipful aets ol the Priest in the distance.
