Oxford is the same as that in Los

A Dried-Up Town.
(Yorkville Enquirer.)
The town of Paris described by
James D. Grist in such interesting
detail recently has about dried up
since the quarantine has been in op
eration. The soldiers are not allow
ed to buy anything in Paris and the
population is not sufficient to make
it worth while even for the smaller
stores.

GRANVILLE EXEMPTION BOARD
SENDING OUT QUESTIONAIRES.
New Blanks to Be Signed by AH
Registered Men Soon to be Sent
Out.
A large batch of the new regis
tration blanks known as the "ques
tionanaire," which is to be distri
buted among all men registered in
the selective draft, has been receiv
ed by the county exemption board.
Five per cent of the blanks will be
sent out daily for the next twenty
days.
Each man who registered last
June, regardless of whether or not
he has been before the board of ex
aminers, or whether he has been ex
cused on the grounds of dependents
or physical disability, must sign
these new blanks and return them
to the exemption board. This is
done for .the purpose of the new
classification which has been -determined
upon by the Provost Marshal.
There are five classes, and the an
swers given by the men signing
them will be the means of determin
ing the class in which they will be
placed.
None of the second class will be
called until the first is completely
exhausted, and none of the third will
be pressed into service before the
second has been disposed of, and so
on down the entire list.
The questionanaire is rather bul
ky and contains sixteen pages. Much
of it must be filled by every man,
although there are a number of
pages prepared for use by each class
seperately.
Fine Young Soldier.
Lieutenant William Landis, who
is spending a five day's furlough in
Oxford with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Charles Landis, has improved
so much physically since he enlisted
in the Granville Grays and went to
Camp Sevier his friends scarcely
knew him. Only about one in every
thousand enlisted men attain a rank
higher than a corporal, but Private
Landis was advanced from high'
private in the rear ranks to second
lieutenant. Lt. Landis's rosy cheeks
and elastic step exemplifies the pre
valence of superior health condi
tions in the Army.
The fuel administration is au
thority for the statement that, while
the annual output of coal has been
increased approximately 50,000,000
tons, the increase in consumption
caused by the war is 100,000,000
tons. An instance cited is that of
the Bethlehem Steel Company,
which demands an increased coal
supply of approximately 3,000,000
tons a year. The coal demands of
public-utility plants particularly in
the industrial sections have increas
ed a third.

The National Bank of Granville is Patriotic, and is Anxious to do it's part in Helping to de

We had an important message for our patrons for this week, but we
are willing to postpone this message in order to give our space for the pur
pose of announcing these meetings.
We appeal to every person in Granville county to lay aside every pri
vate concern on the 14th, and meet with the other members of the com
munity at the school house, and council together for better things for Gran
ville county.

Thousands of Deaths Occur in North
Carolina Needlessly.
(News and Observer)
Dr. B. K. Hays, county health of
ficer for Granville, says that thous
ands of deaths occur in North Car
olina needlessly from whooping
cough. He deplores the fact that
children ill with whooping-cough
are taken into crowded railroad sta
tions and trains and well children
thus exposed to the disease. It is
a matter that the heads of families
can well offord to think about. The
danger of whooping-cough is not
sufficiently realized. Many families
have no doctor at all for it until the
patient gets very ill. The disease is
generally considered as a minor one.
But the results show differently.
Whether a physician is had or not,
certainly an unescapable obligation
rests on the parents of a child ill
with whooping-cough to see to it
that no other child is caused to con
tract the disease from their care
lessness. DRUG DOTS
