PUBLIC LEDGER WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1918 PAGE 2 i i i - ' 1 " . l I i WK'RE GOING AFTER THE SUBMARINES WITH BRAND NEW FIGHTING MACHINE (Washington Special) New submarine lighters of a powerful type are about to be turned out in the. United States in large numbers. After testi fying before the House Naval committee on the naval approp riation bill, Secretary Daniels authorized the statement that contracts for "several scores" of the new craft have been placed with the Ford Motor Company, of Detriot. He de scribed them as "half way be tween a destroyer and a sub marine chased', " 20 feet long and equipped with latest dis coveries for combating subma rines. All parts of the ships ex cept the engines are to be fab ricated in Detroit and the parts shipped to seaboard where they will be assembled. Changes in the Ford plant to permit the handling of the work have progressed so swiftly, Mr. Dan iel said, that deliveries on the contracts during the coming summer are assured. POWERFUL. FIGHTER The new vessels are expected to prove far superior to the chasers now in use, including those of the 110-foot class. They will have steam power with a greater radius of action, will be more seaworthy and will be able to cany heavier armament. It has developed that the latest German Sub marines are equipped with guns which outrange those of small chasers and even some merchant ships. Henry Ford recently placed before Secretary Daniels plans showing the practicability of his factory into a ship fabricat ing plant. Naval constructors had evolved the latest sub marine chased and Rear Ad miral David W. Taylor, with two assistants, was sent to in spect the Ford Plant. After the officers had made their re port the contracts were placed. Possibility that additional contracts might be given other automobile firms was suggested by 3Ir. Daniel, but he said no definite action had been taken along this l.-ne. FINE NAVY UERSOXXEL In connection with Mr. Dan iel's renewed recommendations for a large increase in both temporary and permanent en listed personnel of the navy it .was learned today that the de partment plans extensive en largement of several experiment training stations. Plans already have been approved for enlarg ing the Pelham Ray, New York, and Norfolk, Va., stations. Five thousand men are now at Pelham Bay and 16,000 at Nor folk. Secretary Daniels said that the navy now has 95,000 men under instruction and, with the recommended increase, will have men enough to supply crews not only for the entire naval construction program as now contemplated, but also for the hundreds of merchant ships which are to be placed under his supervision. Congresswoman Jeannette Rankin has broken into the Irish question. Some friend should whisper to Miss Rankin that that is the best question in the world to let alone. It's loaded at both ends. The following is a trans lation of a document found on a German prisoner in Italy. It was dispatched to "The New York Sun" by a special correspondent: "Son of Germany in arms! This is our intoxication. Glory to the artillerymen of ours! The gun, thy powerful, invulnerable brother,, calls thee. Was it not made to move the universe? "O Rifleman of ours! Thou art the force which conquers even death, which not an obstacle with stands. Wherever thou goest thou enterest; wherever thou enterest there is Germany. "O Cavalryman of ours! Engage and overthrow. A harvest of death awaits thee. Curb that winged hurricane the will of thy horse. That cowardly flesh is made to fat ten the fields which shall be thy son's. "Son of Germany, the great hour has come. Life does not end, but surpasses itself and is transformed without a pause. The life of the vanquished is absorbed by the vic tor; the slayer becomes owner of the life of his slain. "See now how in the breast of thy sacred country is contained the life or the world! Do not stoop to feminine pity toward women and children. The son of the vanquish ed has been often the victor of to morrow. What is the worth of vic tory if tomorrow we have the re venge? What kind of father wouldst thou be if thou killed thine owne enemy and left alive the en emy of thy son? "Son of Germany in arms: "Hurl down, strike with thunder, break in pieces! "Rush forth, overthrow, transfix, devastate ! "Bun, kill, kill, kill! "Such is the life of glon'." If you care for heavy hair, that glistens with beauty and is radiant with life; has an incomparable soft ness and is fluffy and lustrous, try Danderine. Just one application doubles the beauty of your hair, besides it im mediately disolves every particle of dandruff; you cannot have nice, heavy, healthy hair if you have dan druff. This destructive scurf robs the hair of its lustre, its strength and its very life, and if not over come it produces a feverishness and itching of the scalp; the hair roots famish, loosen and die; then the hair falls out fast.
