Every woman in the country ought to know about Kloifier's Friend Those who do know about it wonder how they ever got along without it. It has robbed child birth of its terrors for many a young wife. It has preserved her girlish figure and saved her much suffering. It is an external lini ment and carries with it therefore, absolutely no danger of upsetting the system as drugs taken intern ally are :t to do. It is to be rubbed into the abdomen to soften and strengthen the muscles which are to bear the strain. This means much less pain. It also prevents morning sickness and all of ;he other discomforts of pregnancy. A druggist of Macon, Ga., says: " I have sold a large quantity of Mother's Friend and have never known an instance where it has failed to produce the good results claimed for it." A prominent lady of Lam berton, Ark., writes: " With my first six children 1 was in labor from 24 to 30 hours. Alter using Mother's Friend, my seventh was born in 4 hours." THURSDAY, - - - AUG. 32, 1901 It Is said to maintain the public schools of this country costs every man, woman and child a little more than $9. If those high in the church continue to stir theCrawford-Kilgo affair they need not be surprised if the press helps them keep the thing going:- Durham Herald. In Russia the sunllower is cultiva ted for the oil which it yields. This oil is used in cooking, for lamps, for soap-making and for making paints The yield is about f0 bushels to the acre. A Montana Judge says he was of fered by the M ontana Copper Com pa ny $50,000 to decide a case in its favor, but didn't take it. The other side's bid must have been higher was the reason he did not. The Greensboro Record pertinently says there are no millionaries behind the Christian Advocate. This may explain in part at least. Dr. Kilgo's enmity towards the organ of the Western North Carolina Conference. Asa rule, says the Durham Herald, by the time a politician gets on the top of the heap he is well versed in all the tricks of the trade, but if there is an exception to the rule it is our belief that it is in Gov. Aycock. Senator Tillman says Senator Mc Laurin will not get more than 20,(100 votes in the first primary in South Carolina. He ought not to get that many, as he is nothing more than a Republican a wo" in sheep's cloth ing. One of an inquiring mind, an En glishman, has found that a fairly hirsute human head contains i,0t;t) hairs to the square inch, or 127,920 on the whole head. According to him iro,000 is probably the maximum for the most thickly-clad heads. The consolidated Tobacco Com pany of America, which has absorb ed the American and the Continental Tobacco Companies, files a mortgage at Jersey City for $150,000,000. This is the most giant trust yet formed on the farmers product in the world. The bedroom outfit of a man in lola, Kan., comprises just two arti ticles, a quilt and an alarm clock. On a recent sultry night, with his outfit under his arm, he went to the park, spread out his quilt on the grass.put the clock near the spot selected for his head and deliberately went to bed. Thomas Johnson, 7S years old and worth $ 150,000, who died in Viucen- nes, lud., the other day, was a curi ous character. He did not know how to read or writa, never entered a church, was one of the most profane swearers and hardest drinkers in the city; was married four times, and al ways voted the Democratic ticket. According to what a French physi cian says crying and groaning in pain are" nature's own methods of subduing the keenness of physical suffering. He thinks that men should freely relieve their sufferings in this way, and that crying in children should not be repressed, as in doing ho serious consequences may be en gendered. Forty years ago President Lincoln appointed John Jay Jackson, of I'arkersburg, West Va., Judge of the United States Circuit Court, and he still holds the position. During all these years he has never failed but once to holdcourtat the appoin ted time. That was when Confeder at ; troops under General Loring were in possession oi Charleston," where the sessions were held, and the session assigned for that date had to be postponed. The New York Sun rises to ask. "loes a Republican form of govern ment exist where the negro is dis franchised or intimidated?" The in quiry is not germane. The negro is not disfranchised or intimidated in the South. Only a certain class of iH-groes is disfranchised, and as for int imidation that doesn't exist any more than it does in the North, where workman are sometimes informed that they must vote as their employ ers do or hunt other jobs. Wilming ton Star. We beg pa rdon for not noticing be fore now the line, handsome and con veniently gotten up industrial edi tion of t he Durham Recorder. Bro. Hunter has had the honor of getting ii I he handsomest publication of the kind ever issued in the State. It is bound t o prove of great benefit to prosperous, wide a wake Durham. It Is profusely illustrated with all the lending business lights of the city exeept Gen. Cn.rr, who has done as niueh to build up Durham jih any man In it, as well as prominent edu cational uiid industrial buildings. It certainly largely makes up for the short comings of the regular edition or the Recorder, as it seems to us a hltrh-irrade weekly should be publish ed in Durham ami Brother Hunter has the ability to do it. Don't he satisfied with temporary relief from indigestion. Kodol Dyspepsia Cure per manently and corr iletely removes this com plaint. It relieves permanently because it allows the tired stomach perfect rest. Die tine won't rest the stomach. Natuie supplies from the food we eat. The sensible way to help the stomach is to use Koc't 1 DvFuepsia Cure, which digests what you ea and can't help but to do you good, J, G Uall. J MAKING OF GREAT MEN. There are few subjects about w hie more nonesense has been waitte than the making of great men. Aiu about the culmination of it is reach ed in a late writer holding our col leges responsible for not turning out more of them, as well as great theo logians. Colleges are magnificent op portunities, but possess no patent methods for the production of great ness. This, as usually understood, is a combination of natural or acquired endowrnient, circumstance and chance The acquired endowment is in the gift of education but no more, and frequently it is th3 smallest factor in success. Nothing is more common and a t the same time more unrea sonable than to assume that those who are most in the eyes of the pub lie, notably statesmen and such, are the true representatives of greatness THE DOGS OF WAR. The use of dogs in the English army for war purposes continues to be dis cussed as though a novelty, says writer. Far from it. The "dogs of war" have been more than a figure of speech for thousands of years They were used in Egypt 400 B. C The Romans, the Teutons and othe fighting nations of antiquity depend ed much on them for sentinel and de fense purposes. In the Middle Age they are said to have even worn a mor. Like the foxes with the burn ing brands in the fields of the Philis tines, sometimes packs of them witl port-fires on their backs carriec flames and destruction into beleag ured town or camp. The Spauisl discoverers used bloodhounds in tracking the Indians in this country and dogs were likewise, it is stated made of service by our armies in the Philippines. In old days various breeds were employed, but at present the preference is given to the collie UNCLE SAM's'sALARY LIST. According to the latest ollicial list there are 19,445 public functionaries of various kinds and degrees employei in Washington City conducting nu merous departments and bureaus of the Federal Government. These are the civilians appointees in the exec utive departments and do not include Senators and Representatives and several hundred employes of the houses who vibrati bet ween the cap ital and their homes in other parts of the country. Nor does this aggre- irtif-uinnliido.t'il) or -lull Jl fill r mill im'v officers, active and retired, who form a large permanent colony, and the monthly compensation of these 19,44(3 civilian employes amounts to .$1,;:)5,- 70S,8l. Therefore the aggregate sum in salaries annually paid out in Wash ington by the Government disburin clerks reaches the enormous total of Jjfl9,2S,502,72. Besides, probably not less than $3,000,000 additional goes to the Senators and Congressmen and their subordinates and perhaps $1,250,000, more to the army and navy officials, most of whom are of high rank with large pay, there be ing constantly in Washington not less than sixty generals and admirals active and retired. These totals form a grand aggregate of $23,S7S,050.72 annually paid out in Washington in the single itjm in salaries. The Mosquito PIague--200 dead Horses in Hyde County. As tsrrible, almost, as any one of the seven plagues of Egypt lias been the plague of mosquitoes that visited some of t he eastern counties of North Carolina. They stung people to the point of positive torment, at some places reu dering work in the fields an impossi bility; they drove cattle so far into the bays and streams that they were drowned; caused sheep and calves to run themselves to death in an at tempt to escape their attacks. At n'ght fires had to be built about resi dences, stables and cattle yards that the smoke might drive off enough of the mosquitoes to make rest or sleep possible. One man who has recently visited some of the coast counties says; "I saw cattle patiently huddled about smoking stumps in the darkness, while the houses in which people lived were filled with the smoke of burn ing rags. The very air was .alive at night with the little singing pests No living thing seemed able to escape their sharp bills, though perhaps cat tie and horses suffered most, because least able to defend themselves." The reports of greatest damage come from Hyde county, where the soil, vegetation and drainage are es pecially favorable to the mosquito. About 200 horses have died therefrom disease inoculated into the system by the mosquito, and quite as many are now sick. It is estimated that already the loss to the farmers of the county amounts to $20,000, and it will reach much higher figures unless the disease can be speedily checked. News and Observer. The Farmers' State Alliance held its 15th annual session at Hillsboro Tuesday and Wednesday. W. A. Graham president; T. B. Parker, sec retary. The attendance was about the same as last year, about 00. A resolution was adopted asking that all cotton farmers in the State unite in selling their cotton seed through the State business agent, in order to increase prices. Another was of re gret at the death of the widow of Col. L. L. Polk. The thanks of the Alliance were tendered Governor Aycock for placing the Agricultural and Mechanical College under the control of the board of agriculture, entirely composed of practical farm ers. A resolution was adopted ask ing that a club house or mess hall be established at this college, so that students can board themselves as at other colleges. Their Secret Is Out. All Sadidville, Ky., was curious to learn the cause of the vast improvement in the health of Mrs. S. P. Whittaker, who had for a long time, endured untold suffering from a chronic bronchial troub'e. "It's all due to Dr. King's New Discovery," writes her husband. "It completely cured her and also cured our little grand-daughter of a severe attack of Whooping Ccugh." It positively cures Coughs, Colds, LaGrippe, Bronchitis, all Throat and Lung troubies. Guaranteed bottles 50c and $l.oo. Trial bottles free at Hall's drug store. The Maryland republicans hold their state convention and nominate eandidatis for the positions to be filled. Their platform denounces the "white supremacy" movement and ex-Seutaor Gorman. The skin is the seat of an almost end less variety of diseases. They are known by various names, but are all due to the same cause, acid and other poisons in the .blood that irritate and interfere with the proper action of the skin. To have a smooth, soft skin, free from all eruptions, the blood must be kept pure and healthy. The many preparations of arsenic and potash and the large number of face powders and lotions generally used in this class of diseases cover up for a short time, but cannot remove per manently the ugly blotches and the red, disfiguring pimples. Eternal vigilance is the price of a beautiful complexion when such remedies are relied on. Mr. H. T. Shobe, 2704 Lucas Avenue, St. Louis, Mo., says : " My daughter was afflicted for years with a disfiguring eruption on her face, which resisted all treatment. She was taken to two celebrated health springs, but received no bene fit. Many medicines were prescribed, but with out result, until we decided to try S. S.
