STILL IN THE RING.
The old tobacco year dead and the
toll of the knell,
On low prices you all did feel;
So we send this greeting of love and
good cheer,
And of high prices you all going to
hear.
Our auctioneer is a dandy,
His voice loud and clear,
He sings glad tidings to the farmers
Every day in the year.
We've no drummers to give you a
call
By this our expenses are exceeding
ly small;
We give you the best prices obtained
on the markets,
The money others pay drummers
we put in your pocket.
We will make the Johnson Ware
house A place of pure delight;
We have done away with drummers
And we are out of that fight.
From the door of the office
Clear back to the wall;
We will stand strong to the farmers.
If by it we fall.
We've been able by your help,
To maintain our position;
And it has placed us in power,
To defy all competition.
The large orders we hold,
Is certainly no fake,
For we can handle more tobacco,
Than the whole county make.
We love you dear farmer friends,
And your needs anticipate;
And on the high averages,
We are strictly up to date.
We make flings at no one,
We have good wishes for all;
And on our own merit,
We either stand or fall.
To those who've sold with us,
We tender our thanks;
Those who have not sold with us,
We ask but a chance.
If you want pay for your labor,
Ship you tobacco and sell,
And the high averages to your neigh
bor,
As a thing you shall tell.

STRENGTH OF MEN.
That physical strength increases
up to a certain age and then decreases
goes without saying. But a wide
diversity of views is apt to exist
concerning when this point of decline
supervence. And as a muscular ca
pacity is not at all an uncommon
happening. Tests of several thou
sand cases made by suitable strength
measuring appliances furnish some
interesting figures on the subject. In
the white race the "lifting" power
of the average healthy youth of
seventeen is said to be two hundred
and eight pounds. It gradually in
creases and in the thirty-first year
it reaches its highest limit, three
hundred and fifty-six pounds. Then
practically remaining stationary till
forty is reached it slowly lessens from
that point, fifty showing a diminu
tion of twenty-six pounds from the
age of thirty. After fifty the statis
tics, while all showing deminishing
power, are of little value in that the
rate of decline varies very much with
the individual.
Tne excitement incident to travelling and
change of food and water often brings on c'i-
arrhoea, and lor this reason no one should
leave home without a bottle of Chamber
lains Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy.

ANTI-TREATING ASSOCIATION.
Whatever degree of success attends
that proposed national anti-treating
association, there is little doubt that
it is on the right track. The chief
cause of the country's excess in the
use of intoxicating drinks does not
lie in the indulgence of the appetite
within its ordinary thirst limits, but
is built very largely on a distorted
bar-room view ot tne principle 01 re
ciprocity. Kindly sentiment, mutual
regard, personal appreciation and
their- allied feellings are undeniably
all right as lubricators of the wheels
of life. And of course they would not
have value unless occasion were taken
to apply them. But it is just as much
a mystery as ever, even in this en
lightened age, to get at tne reason
why it is thought by so many men
these same sentiments have their best
PTnression in anxious extreme and
oftentimes expensive efforts to help
one another on the road to intoxicat
ing. There is surely some way of
improving on this custom without
in any degree lessening the operation
of good-heartedness, and if this latest
anti-treating schgme can bring it
about It will not be long before, with
a clear head and less headaches, the
world gives it its proper praise.
A Typical South African Store.
O. R. Larson, of Bay Vi la, Sundays
River, Cape Colony, conducts a store typical
of South Africa, at which can be purchased
anything from the prov-rbial "needle to an
anchor." This store is situated in a valley
nine miles from the nearest railway station
aud about twenty five miles from the nearest
town. Mr. Larson says: "I am favored
with the custom of farmers within a radius
of thirty miles to many of whom I have sup
plied Chamberlain's remedies. All te tify
to their value in a household where a doctor's
advice is almost cut of tne question With
in one mile of my store the popu'ation is
perhaps sixty. Of those within the past
twelve months, no less than fourreen have
been absolutely cured by Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy. This must surely be a

It is alway a good plan to believe
in a person until we prove him to be
unworthy of our trust. If we would
do this more we would find fewer
persons really untrust-worthy. It is
because people do not trust that there
are so many to distrust. Is it not
true that we respond to expectations
of others? If we meet a person who
feels in good humor, who has good
news and is so full of joy that he
seems to think others feel the same,
do we not meet his cordial greeting
with one hardly a whit less cordial?
On the contrary, if we meet with a
lachrymose, disheartened person, one
who looks through the purple mists
of self and self-interest, one who be
lieves all people are suspicious char
acters, are we not in a measure in
fluenced by this person? Do we not
leave his presence with a feeling of
suspicion, and do we not find our
selves wondering at our faith in hu
man kind and having this faith turn
el to unbelief and bitter.
