THURSDAY, - - DEC. 12, 1901 Pettus is the Morrill of Ala bama being- eighty years old has no Intention of not being elected next term and with no disposition on the nart of his constituents to retire him. The mother of Governor Beckham I of Kentucky has a remarkable record. She has the unprecedented distinction of having been the mother of a gov ernor, the daughter of a governor, the sister of a governor and a cousin of a governor. The recent election m JNew York is said to have cot the State about $2,500,000, but some of the New York ers think they got the worth of their money. It also cost the felio ws who bet on the wrong side about $1,000,- 000. Friends of Gen. Joseph Wheeler are ureintr his nomination for United States Senator from Alabamato suc ceed Senator Pettus, whose re-election is objected to by many Democrats because he resides in the same district with Senator Morgan. There is a rush for divorces in the District of Columbia where over 300 aDDlications have been filed in the past six months. A new law goes into effect in January which elimi nates about a half dozen causes.hence the rush by the ill-paired to take ad vantage ot the present law. The Sugar Trust is circulating in the West petitions to Congress to put raw sugar on the free list, there-by, it says, saving consumers $50,000,000 a year, and giving them a refined sugar at trom three to four cents a pound. This is a rear attack on the beet sugar men. Mrs. Theresa Wilcox, wife of the Hawaiian Delegate to Congress, is proprietor and editor of a semi-week ly newspaper at Honolulu, printed in part English and in part Kanaka, the avowed purpose of which is to support the home rule movement for native Hawaiians. Mr. C. Cook, who went to Syra cuse, N. Y.,with two cents in his pock et and by close application to busi ness amassed an estate of $700,000 has concluded that he can get along ou $100,000, and divided the rest among his children, which is better than a family squabble over it after he passes away. .Not only are the internal revenue taxes yielding a much larger income than is needed by the government, but their yieldings are lar in excess of the estimates. And this is regard ed as good financiering financiering the dollars out of the pockets of tax payers and into the vaults of the United States treasury. It is not particularly relished by the tax -pay ers, notwithstanding. The postmaster general's declara tion that "theextraordiuary increase in the number of resignations from fourth-i-iass rffirps is due to the fact that men find greater opportunities ior oeiTermeui, in civil me tuaii iu .. i . . . ; si i : . public services," may be true, but it would be more readily accepted as such were there not always some one waiting to take the place made va cant by resignation, and not only one, but many. It is not on record that the department has had any dif ficulty in rinding all the fourth-class postmasters it has places for. The excess of government receipts over government expenditures thus far duriug the present fiscal year has been about $20,000,000, and by the closeof the year will probably amount tt) $70,000,000 or $80.C0),000. This fig ure represents the aggregate of un necessary taxes the people of this country are paying, and there is no assurance of relief through any action that congress may take at its present sesiou. There should be a reduction of internal revenue taxes as well as of import duties, but it looks now as though the taxpayers may con sider themselvesfortuuateif $30,000,000 or $40,000,000 are lopped off the war taxes. It is too much to hope for any reduction or tne tarirr or ior any reasonable reduction of the internal revenue taxes. Industrious Girls. Mr. C. D. Gunter, who runs a fur niture factory some four or five miles from town, has two daughters that are fast becoming expert painters. They paint all the furniture made at the factory, and do it well. A few days ago they painted in one day 74 bedsteads; that is they put three coats one of paint and two of varnish on 1 4 bedsteads, which means that they, putting on one coat to each bedstead, did the work comparable to painting 222 bedsteads in one day rheir daily job consists in painting 80. These young ladies are about 14 and 1(5 years old Ua News. KNWING A GOOD THING. The poet has written that "there is "a tide in the affairs of men which taken at it flood leads on to fortune." Maybe in the experience of the poet this was true. Further it may be that opiiortumties for amassing wealth are lying loose all around about us and that we do not recognize them. At all events it is true that opportu nities apparently come to some peo ple and not to others or it may be that some people have a grasping acuity tnatis not possessed by o t hers and that to the latter the army of drudgers and plodders all oportu- ni ties are as ships that pass in the night. They don't know a good thing when they see it m lybe can't even see a good thing, let alone know ing it, when it is fairly thrust upon their vision. It is a fact that some people will prosper and grow fat where others will fail and wax exceed ing poor, and the natural disposition is to credit the prosperity and charge the failure to luck and the absence of it. While that is an easy way out of it for the one who fails, it is not at all creditable to the one who succeed?, and it dosen t go a great way toward verifying the declaration of the poet above quoted. W e have read of, and have seen in our daily experiences, some marvel ous Instances of "striking it rich' and have possibly envied our fellows tne "good luck" that has attended their operations. Rut is it always luck? To put it a little stronger, is it ever luck pure and simple? Does not opportunity come, some time or other, knocking at everybody s door. anxious to be let in? iou win oe sorry u you iail to see our lines of fine pants thev are enual I J -1 11 J A l j to taiior maqe at urenana ws.
