DEC. 3, 1903. Col. J. S. Amis. Dr. T. 15. Kingsbury pays the fol lowing tribute in Sunday's News and Observer to his old friend, Col. J. S. Amis: , , North Carolina has lost an excel lent, honorable, noble citizen, and the Presbyterian church a faithful and wise member in the death of James S. Amis, of Granville county. It occurred at Waynesboro, a., on Wednesday night, November 4, 1903. He had been residing for a year or two with his only child and deeply beloved daughter. Mrs. Mary, wife of 1'resident .! nines H. Flshburue, head of the famous Flshburue English, Classical and Military School at that place. He had been a sufferer for a few years from paralysis, when the third stroke came with its fatal work, and the aged Christian passed to his eternal rest In the home of the "ood. He was unconscious ior neany a week. Until a few days before his death he had been In comparatively comfortable health, though feeble, and was able to read and enjoy his papers and books as was usual with him. He was born in Granville coun ty, N. C, some seventy-six or seven years ago I do not know his pre cise age was the son. of the late Lewis Amls.amost estimable farmer and citizen, and a member of the Presbyterian church, was graduated with honor at the University of North Carolina, was a lawyer of learning and ability, did a good practice and was highly esteemed by the bar and the people generally. I knew him intimately from 1S47, wait ed on him when he was married at Hiilsboro, to Miss Mary Scott, in 1S49, was In close association with him, enjoying always an unbroken friendship, until 1 moved to Wilming ton in 17G. I saw but little of him after that year, but we were stead fast in our personal attachment, and now that he is gone to his Heavenly reward, there is no one, outside of his immediate family, who will cher ish his memory with more sacred ness, and bear witness more gladly to his sterling character, his pure, manly, exalted life, his noble man hood. All through the 'fifty-six years and more of our unfading friendship, 1 have observed his uniform bearing, his sincerity, his high ideals of life, his fidelity to all obligations in church and State, his fine common sense, his admirable judgment, his conscientiousness and devotion to I the right and the true. 1 have in all these years never known a half-dozen men in whom I confided with so much of unreservedness, and whose good opinion I more valued. He lived right, he died right, with an un faltering trust in the Atonement o! his Crucified and Risen Redeemer, and "after life's fitful fever" he reposes in the arms of Love in the City whose builder and maker is God. My dear friend was a Whig In poli tics, was a conspicuous leader in Granville, when it was the third largest county in the State, and su perior to almost anv county In Its high civilization and prosperity. He served in the Legislature, and in one session was the leader of his party in the House of Commons. He was clear-headed, logical and vigorous in debate, and as a speaker on the hust ings was formidable and command ed both the attention and confidence of the people. My impression is that he was a Ruling Elder In the Oxford Presbyterian church for decades. He has left a good and honored name, and all who knew him must have es teemed him, and will regret nis de parture. He lost his only dear son, Ernest, some years ago. and now he has been laid by the side of his be loved son in the cemetery at Waynes boro, in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. His devoted wife and his loving daughter, are left, and they weep over his departure, but do not sorrow as they sorrow who are with out hope. They know that hereafter it may be not long hence they shall be united in the bright, beauti ful home of the redeemed of God. "There dwels the Lord our Right eousness, And keeps bis own in perfect peace, And everlasting rest." Charles Wesley. Why is a Newspaper Like a Voman? One bright friend came in theotber day with what he thought was a co nundrum. "Why is a newspaper like a woman?" The various an swern were: "Because both have to be known to be appreciated." Because It hap to have some one to run it." Be cause both are good advertising me diums." "Because bo.th have to be pressed." "Because it sometimes changes its dress and tells tales." The correct answer is, "Because every man should have one of his own and not be running after his uelghbors." Exchange. Farming Did It. Whether the following catechism Is entirely orthodox throughout or not, It is worth studying a little: "What has brought this wonderful prosperity which our country now enjoys? Farming. What has brought our government back from Europe? Farming. What has brought inter est down so low that every legiti mate enterprise can work on bor rowed capital and get rich? Farm ing. What of all professions would you recommend to the rising genera tion? Farming. What fosters com merce and stimulates manufacturers? Farming. What has caused the present boom In railroad building? Farming. What has dispersed our army of tramps? Farming. What business, If wisely conducted, will re turn something more than a living every year? Farming? What busi ness is conducive to long life; and of all others least connected with crime, vice, etc? Farming. What busi ness, either directly or Indirectly, is the power behind the throne' of all Industries under the sun? Farming." Charity of speech is as divine a thing as charity of action. To judge no one harshly, to misconceive no man's motives, to believe things as they seem to be until they are found otherwise, to temper judgment with mercy surely this is quite as good as to build up churches, establish asylums and found colleges.
