. OXFORD PUBLIC LEDGER, FRIDAY, MAY 24, 1907. THE OXFORD PUBLIC LEDGER BY JOHN T. BRITT. ONE YEAR - $1 00 SIX MONTHS 50 Entered through Oxford, N. C, Post Offl as mall matter of the second class, in accord n e with the Act of Congress, March s, 18S. High Point's census, finished last week, shows that the population of ou -"Grand Kapids of the South" is 11, 241. Harry K. Thaw's fortune is nearly $500,000, or the direct legacy from his father, besides the annual income of about $80,000 Much good it does him, though, while in prison. !S. E. Hall, for eight years editor o t.hfi Tnion ReDublican: retired last week and was succeeded by J. B. Gol sen. a son of the late Cant. J. B..Gol- sen, who was for many years editor of the Republican. One hundred and fifteen dollars fine was put upon the Southern Railroad in a penalty sutt which grew out of the Southern taking twenty eight days to carry a solid car of freight from Char Jotte to Waynesville. Some folks say a lawyer can't be convicted. Well, ordinarily they are not, but R. A. L. Dick, a prominent member of the bar at Cumberland,Md., "was convicted of embezzlement last week and sentenced to jail a year. The industrial South is marching: 4,0 the fore in every line. L.ast week the Elkin Manufacturing Co.,of Elkin, famed for its fine blankets, shipped eight car loads of them to northern cities, same being the largest shipment At one time. Elkin blankets are known all over the world. A remarkable illustration of the un certainty of life was witnessed in a court room in Des Moines, la., a day or two ago. A man while testifying in a case said: "I am sixty-five years of age but sound as a dollar and am good for at least eighty-five." imme diately gasped and fell from his chair, dead from heart disease. The governor declares that since the legislature has passed the acts in ques tion and the railroads announce their purpose to resist, he as executive of ficer, will go to the limit of his power toward securing enforcement. He says heretofore he has had the compliment of counsel in such cases, but the last legislature saw fit to transfer this pow er to the corporation commission, so 'that he can nave only an advisory -relation with the commissionjn the lit igation. Jibe Stat Commission having in charge the fund of 8500,000 to be spent in North Carolina in the next four years for increased facilities for the care of the insane, and especially in arrangements for the care of epileptics, in session at Raleigh Saturday agreed to estahlish the epileptic colonly on the the Grimes lands lately purchased as additional to the lands of the State Hospital Raleigh, and putting in proper buildings will expend between 8200, 000 and 8300,000. Judge Spencer B. Adams and Mr. Marion Butler are at it, hammer and tongs. Adams says Butler is unreli able in his statements and as dead as a door nail and Butler says Adams is too small for his job as chairman and is a traitor to the President besides. While this interesting debate is in progress ex-Governor Russell is de nouncing Federal Judgeurnell as an ignorant malicious loafer who should be impeached and calls upon the State J3ar Association to proceed him. against Beaufort is the third oldest town in the State, was incorporated in 1722, and it has been the dream of the fore fathers to make the port of Beaufort a great port of entry. The original scheme of Governor Morehead was to connect the mountains with the sea by a line of railroad and it was the orgi mial intention to build the railway to .Beaufort, controlled and operated by the State. Now it is that Beaufort is to have its railroad, for the Norfolk & Southern Railway at a cost of about one million dollars, has built a bridge 8,400 feet long, connecting Beaufort by rail with the outside world, and the people of that town are making great preparations to duly celebrate the events. , Miss Jeane, who made the million dollar donation for . the education of Southern negroes, is 84 years old and worth five million dollars, so she will still be quite comfortably off. Senator Tillman, of South Carolina, has bought property in High Point and last week his son, Henry S. Till man, who is a lawyer, was in High Point looking after the property. A. new law in Texas says that 75 per cent, of the reserve of Texas in surance policies shall be invested in Texas. It goes into effect June 1st. All the insurance companies say they will vacate on that date. This will be an excellent opportunity for home companies to do business. Announcement is made that Dr. Kemp Battle, to whom all North Car- lina owes a debt of gratitude for the part the has played in educating the youhg men of the State and defending the erood name of the commonwealth whenever occasion required, will retire from the faculty of the University of Xorth Carolina. Newfoundland fishermen are trving to place whaleskin on the market for leather for shoes and boots. A whale skin spread would cover 1,500 square feet and if it can be made into leather, one skin would stock a shoe store. A large whale yields 250 barrels of oil and about 2 tons of whalebone, and all the rest of the carcass, perhaps fifty tons, is wasted. The railroads of the Southeastern Passenger Association have announced a very sweeping change to take effect soon on all the lines affiliated under the above named association. Under the rules as contained in this new or der many people who have been trav eling' on reduced or special rates will be deprived of this right hereafter, and the "block-ticket" will become a thing of the past. Superintendent Cole of the Method ist Orphange, Raleigh, was notified of the gift to the institution by Hon.Frank Daniels, of Goldsboro, of one thousand dollars to be used as a perpetual en dowment of a scholarship in the or phange. Mr; Daniels in making $he gift, 'desires that it be considered ' a memorial of his wife, Mrs. Carrie Borden Daniels, whose sad death re cently was cause for such general re gret in the city of Goldsboro and throughout the State wherever people lad come under her sweet and gentle influence, No special delivery postage stamps will be needed after the first of next July to insure immediate delivery of a letter. Pursuant to an act of the last session of Congress, Postmaster Gen eral Meyer issued an order that on and after July 1st next, if there is at tached to any letter or package of mail matter 10 cents worth of stamps, ofany denomination, with the words "Special delivery" written or printed on the en velope or covering, in addition to the postage required for ordinary delivery the article will be handled as if it bore a regulation special delivery stamp. One distillery company in Kentucky turns out every seven days 1,208 bar rells of sweet mash whiskey. The out put for a year would be 62,400 bar rels. The cost of all this to the manu facturer may be fairly estimated at $374,000 and they receive from the wholesalers a profit of from $1 to $0 per barrel. The government comes in for a nice little rake-off, but the fellow who has to pay it all, including trans portation charges, government and lo cal license fees, salary of barkeeper, and rent of building is the man before the bar, and for 62,400 barrels of booze he lets go of $24,761,678 and then goes home and beats his wife" because supper isn't ready. Wonderful Ecezema Cure. "Our little boy had ecezema for five years," writes N.CA. Adams, Henrietta, Pa. Two of our home doctors said the case was hopeless, his lungs being affected We then employed other doctors but no benefit resulted. By chance we read about Electric Bitters; bought a bottle and soon noticed improvement. We continued this medicina until several bottles were used, when our boy was completely cured." Best of all blood medicines and bodv building health tonics. Guaranteed at Hamilton's Drug store. 50c. In every war fought on American soil, North Carolina has taken first po sition. Now she leads her sister States by establishing a permanent Peace Society. "First in war; first in peace, etc Chairman Adams on Butler. The finest thing Chairman Spencer B. Adams ever did in his life was th 1 A T T1 .1 luaat lit; gave iviiiry .Ann xiuuer m Washington last week. Democrats and Republicans alike despise Butler; and it is distinctly pleasing to every body that the chairman of the republi can party, speaking for his party so plainly shows the esteem in which he holds the gentleman from Sampson. Chairman Adams declared that the North Carolina republicans were for Roosevelt, and he said of the charge thai Butler had made that republican leaders here were trying to defeat Roosevelt and his policies: "If the ex senator was as well known here (in Washington) as he is in North Caroli na, no credence whatever would .be given , his assertions." That is. mighty neat way of calling a man a liar, and beats the president's style al hollow. Lontinueing he said: "It had just as wall be understood that he (Butler) is as dead as a door nail the Old North State, and he cannot by this means galvanize his political corpse into life again; the people of all par ties in North Carolina know him, and any man, measure or party will sufRr by any allegiance or connection with him, however slight or remote it may be. Neither he nor his wild and un- averacious statements are. of sufficient importance to deserve attention. Speaking of the charges' made by R. H. McNeill, a Butler man, "Chairman Adams said, "I never shoot at a gnat Chairman Adams in tearing off this line of conversation, has sounded a note that every true Jsorth Carolinian will hear with pleasure. Marion Butler is cordially hated by the whole state. "Here's to your'health and happ-ness" DeWirt'.e Little Early Risers famous little pills.
