OXFORD FUBLIC LEDGER, FRIDAY OCTOBER 18, 1907(! . -1 TfiE OXFORD PUBLIC LEDGER. BY JOHN T. BRITT. ONE YEAR -SIX MONTHS $IOO . 50 Entered through Oxford, N. C, Post Office as mail matter of the second class, in accord ance with the Act of Congress, March 3, 1879. Within 24 hours 20,000 bales of cotton, worth $1,300.000, were shipped from Wilmington on two ships last week. Willie P. Mangum Turner, who for several months has been city editor of The Ealeigh Evening Times, will lo cate at Lexington for the practice of law. When the New York teachers tackle the "big boys" under the rule permitt ing corporal punishment in the public schools the committee on pistoricals will probably make a report. Most "men are happiest while hust-lino-! The rust of idleness is what breeds the mircobe of misery in a man's mind, but a busy man even for gets his dyspepsia and his debts. mm . Governor Johnson, of Minnesota, says he is not a candidate for the Pres idency. He say s, further, that he has known personally for three months that Mr. Bryan was a candidate. Charlotte has grown so big that a sub-station of the Southern has been established in what is called North Charlotte There is quite a lot of man ufacturing in the vicinity and about 8,000 people. It is remarked that Rutherford B. Hayes was the only President who barred intoxicants from the White House. It may be added that he was the only Pjesident who ever reached the White House through the theft of two States that had voted for his op ponent. Wilmington Star. Assistant Commissioner of Labor and Printing Shipman says reports coming in from the farmers are large ly to the effect that since the .general advance in the wages paid farm labor ers a big per cent, of the negroes have gotten so that they work only about half the time they used to since they can 'now manage to live on the wages they receive for half their time In tne animated political discussions of this unusual "off year." says ,Lex- ington Dispatch, interest has so center ed around the governorship and the three aspirants for that place that little or nothing has been said of the office of lieutenant governor. So far as we have noticed not a man has been sug gested for that office. We wish to sug srest one. a winner Col. John S. Cun ningham, of Person county. Judge W. B. Council, who had to give up court at Greensboro on ac count of jllness, has been very ill with pleurisy-pneumonia at his home in Hickory, but is now improving The judge has not been in good health since he was in a wreck on the Seaboard Air Line something like a year ago. He was injured at the time and this evidently has caused his poor health since, He is a very able jurist and a likable gentleman, and all the state hopes for his complete recovery. W?th the completion of the highest building in the world in New York came the necessity of finding a daring steeplejack who would paint the flag staff and place a large copper ball on its top. The top of the pole is 700 feet above the street. On Saturday E. D. Capell successfully accomplished it. He gave the flag staff five coats of paint and placed the copper globe on the top and received 81,000 for his work. The 42 story building is expected to be ready for occupancy within 60 days. Judge Pritchard handed down his decision in the matter of the ap peal of counsel for the defend ant, the State Corporation Commis sion and the attorney General of North Carolina from a ruling by Standing Master Montgomery in the railway rate controvarsy, granting the State's counsel an opportunity to inspect the indexes of the books of the complaint ant company, the Southern Railway, but over-ruling the exception of the defendants to the Standing Master's ruling refusing to allow the State to examine the books and the accounts of the Southern Railroad prior to June 30, 1905. Could not expected any better from Judge Pritchard. Split on Organs and Insurance. The Primitive Baptist brethren of Georgia have split on the question of organs and insurance. One faction opposes organs in the churches and consider it an affront to God and a sin unpardonable to take out insurance on property or human life, especially on church buildings. The other faction looks. with favor on these institutions of a wicked and perverse generation "and there ye are," as Mr. Dooley would say. Law Constitutional. The Supreme Court of Tennessee has decided the Pendleton law to be constitutional. This statute, enacted by the Tennessee Legislature last spring, makes mandatory the abolition of saloons in all cities in Tennessee of 100,000 inhabitants or less "hereafter incorporated," it being an amendment to the so-called Adams law which pro hibited saloons in all towns of 5,000 or less population. It is a virtual ex tension of the "four mile law" to all cities in the State. Beauty of Old People. Men and woman make their own beauty or their own ugliness. Lord Lytton speaks of a man "who was uglier than he had any business to be," and if he could but read it, every hu man being carries his life in his face, and is good looking or the reverse as his life has been good or evil. On our features the fine chisels of life and emotion are eternally at work. Beauty is not the monopoly of blooming young men and pink and white maids. There is a slow growing beauty which only comes to perfection in' old age. Grace belongs to no period of life and im proves the longer it exists. Race Problem in Cities. Some who conclude that there is a "race question" distributed all over the South will be interested to learn from educational reports of -Tennessee this year that all the children of school age in Pickett county in that State are white. Fentress county, Tenn., reports only nine negroe students of any age. Like conditions are even more strik ing in eastern counties of this State. While there is no need of manufactur ing a race question in any part of the South, there is in fact more material to the square mile for manufacturing one in Washington, Philadelphia, New York, and even in Boston than there is in Southern areas more extensive than the New England States. St. Louis Republic. A The Cost of Living. X? Jja you know how sauchffio;;e on the a wera.gr itrtots you to live than it did ip lbi)b! -tJradstreet s Commer cial Agency, which keeps account of the ups and downs of the price of com modities, has answered the question in the last issue of "Bradstreet's, which says: "Compared with the low level set on July 1, 1896, the gain is 54.8 per cent." So if it cost you $100 a month to live then, it now costs you over 8154, The protected trusts are the chief cause of high prices and there seems to be a determination by the dominant political party to refuse to revise the tariff which protects the trusts and prevents competition. If the Republican party wins in the com ing national election, the leaders will declare that it is an endorsement of the tariff policy of protecting the trusts and there can be but little relief from trust high prices as long as the tariff protects them. As large profits have induced the trusts to manufacture more than the people can consume, the surplus is sold abroad at bargain prices. Why should not the American people participate in these bargains the trusts sell to foreigners? A WOMAN'S BACK, The Aches and Pajns Will Disappear if the Advtce of This Charlotte Woman is Fol lowed. In addition to this large discount he agrees to re turn the money to any purchaser whom the specific does not cure. It is quite unusual to be able to buy 50c pieces for a quarter, but that is what this offer really means, for it is only recently, through the solicitation of druggist J. G. Hall that this medi cine could be bought for less than 50c, he urged the proprietors to allow him to sell it at this reduced price for a little while, aggreeing to sell a certain amount. The result has justified his good judgment, for the sale has been something remarkable.
