OXFORD PUBLIC LEDGER, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1907. THE OXFORD PUBLIC LEDGER. BY JOHN T. BRITT. ONE YEAR -SIX MONTHS $1 25 - 75 Entered through Oxford, X. C, Post Office as mall matter of the second class. In accord ance with the Act of Congress, March 3, 1879. Just to please his pretty young wife, a West Virginia man is going to be come a candidate for Governor. She has adopted a good way to nd out whether men are as much stuck on her husband as she is. A gold brick weighing 217 ounces and valued at $3,700 was exhibited at Thomasville a few days ago. The material was taken from CapL M. L. Jones' mine near Thomasville and was the work of one week. It is said that a Dallas, Tex., (man has a nose five inches long. If every body who pokes his' or her nose into everybody's business had a nose like that thev would have noses that would foa worth knocking- -Wilmington Star. With 200 delegates in attendance at Nashville, Tenn., the Southern tex tile conference adopted resolutions rec ommending 14 years as the age limit of children who work in mills and fac tories and that the time limit of work for women and children be 60 hours a week. At a meeting held a few days ago Mecklenburg Presbytery adopted a resolution to the effect that the min imum salary for pastors should be 8900 and that Presbytery will not hereafter place a call in the hands of a pastor unless the salary is as much as 0900. This action was taken on account of tho increased cost of living. The Hon. John Sharp Williams de clares that he intends to devote a solid year to study in order to fit himself for his place in the United States Senate, to which he has been elected by the Mississippians. He may forget some times that he is not in the House and will go to making trouble for some of those sedate Republican Senators. According to the sworn statement of W. K. Whitson, chairman of the prohibition executivo committee, the prohibitionists of Asheville spent near ly 84,000 to be exact 83,787.52 during the recent campaign in a suc cessful effort to carry Asheville "dry." The statement filed under the law by Mr. Whitson is itemized and gives the list of all funds received and expended. Several days ago a registered pack age containing 83,000 in currency, sent by the Bank of Richmond, Va., to a correspondent in North Carolina, was opened, the currency abstracted and a newspaper substituted for the bills. The robbery was the work of an expert, for the newspaper placed in the envelope was the exact weight of the bills. Gov ernment detectives are hard at work on the case. After fiifty-four years of service in the treasuey department, Thomas J Hobbs, one of the disbursing officers, has announced his intention of retiring, During forty -two years of his service Hobbs has been a disbursing officer, having been promoted to that position in 1865, after twelve year as a clerk in the department. About 8200,000, 000 has passed through his hands since he began his duties as a disbursing of ficer. The Southern & Western Railroad people will build a handsome hotel on the top of the Blue Ridge, near Mc Kinney's gap, for the accommodation of their passengers. It is said that trains leaving Charleston after supper one day will arrive at the hotel for breakfast the next "morning. The point on which the building will be is about 4,000 feet above the sea and the view from there is one of the prettiest this side of the Rocky Mountains. Talk about nature-fakirs, Mrs. Hen ry Harris, of Maine, is the limit. Says she broke a common hen egg in a bowl and noticed a small egg floating around in die white-and-yellow of the hen egg. Calling her husband, they examined it, and pronounced it a sparrow's egg. Breaking it open, they discovered a little sparrow alive arfd kicking. Their verdict is that the hen swallowed the sparrow's egg, andit got inside of her own egg, and as it was warm weather there, the sparrow egg was about hatch ed. The wee sparrow is alive. Mr. R. D. Douglas, who' has been editor of the Greensboro Industrial News, owing to the press of other work has resigned, and Mr. W. A. Hilde brand has been selected to succeed him. People who sell cows and tell lies about the quantity of milk the bovine will produce should take warning. In Durham the other day a cow was sold with a guarantee as to thequantity of the lacteal fluid she would produce daily, and when the amount fell short some quarts the seller and guarantor was haled before a magistrate and re quired to return the purchase money and take the cow which failed to make good. A writer says that character shows in the way you wear your hat. If its on straight, you are upright; on the right side, you are amiable and hu mane; on the left you are a gambler; on the back, like a dude, it is a sign of debt, recklessness and daring. If down over the forehead, vou are sel fish and bigoty; if on the top of your head, like the hat was too little for you, you are variable and wish-washy; and so forth. But folks usually don't have to study hats to know what sort of a man you are. Tobacco Produced. This country produces, consumes and sells to foreign consumers more tobacco than any other country in the world. We exported over 300,000,000 pounds last year, three times as much as any other country exported, and yet we mi ported nearly 38,000,000 pounds. The J i - :ji : a usu ui Louacuu is lapiuiy increasing. -i hundred years ago the total value of the manufactured tobacco crop was a little more than 81,000,000. Then,as now the South supplied the trade with the larger part of the raw material. Frenzied Finance. A Richmond lawyer was consulted not long since bv a colored man who complained that another negro owed him 83, a debt which he absolutely re fused to discharge. The creditor had dunned and dunned him, but all to no purpose. He had finally come to the lawyer in the hope that he could give him some good advice. "What reason does he give for re fusing to pay. you?" asked the legal man. "Why, boss," said the darkey, "he said he done owed me dat money for so long that de mteres had et it all up, an he did nt owe me a cent. Man's Body. On an average man's body there are 340,000 hairs. Plucking one every second, it would take him twelve eight hour working days to pull them all out. In his blood there are 25.000.- 000,000,000 red corpuscles. Laid out side by side they would cover a surface of 3,130 square yards. The whole of the blood passes through a man's heart nearly twice in every minute. It weighs one-thirteenth of the entire body weight and it moves in different parts of the body at speeds varying from ten feet to 1,666 yards (nearly one mile) an hour. Ihe fat of your body is fluid It becomes solid when the body cools after death. It is one of your most useful constituents, forming a non-con ducting sheath to protect you from cold, acting as pads to preserve from shock, on the tips of the fingers, the toes, and the heels, and lying always ready as a reserve food supply when you can get uothing to eat. A little artery passes from your brain through the skull into the scalp, which acts as a safety valve when the brain is con gested with blood. Slightly Careless. The following is a small boy's ac count of the meeting of an old ram and pugnacious billy goat, as printed in an exchange: One time there was a young gote which felt butty, and there was an ole ram which lay in the rode, half asleep, a chune his cud. The gote he had been shet ud in the paster all his life, and had never saw a ram and he sed to his sister, the gote did, "You jest stan still an see me wipe that freekoff the face of the earth." So the gote he went up before the ram and stomped. his feet and shuk his hed real friteful, but the ram he didn't get up, but only jes kep a chune his cud and watched out between his I lashes. Bime by the gote backed off and took a run, and then arose up in the air an come down with his hed on the ram's hed, whack! The gote had his busted, but the ole ramhe smiled wid his mowth, and sed to the butty- gotes' sister, "Pears to me, miss, that kangroo of yorn is mitey careless where he lites; he come darn dasted near makin me swoller my cud."
