Tuesday morning, the clouds began to lightly gather as if they were going to shower the earth, but as the Demo cratic hosts began to gather and the sun continued its daily travels across the heavens, the elements decided-to do nothing to mar the pleasure of the occasion. Bv twelve o'clock when the delegates had assembled to meet in convention, the sun was smiling in ap-j parent sympathy, and every democrat j felt its rays tickling the very cockles j of his heart. I precisely at twei ve o ciock cue uuun House bell summoned the valiant, and in a few minutes they were stumping nn thp. Court. Total When time arrived for action to vote for congressman.the convention showed that it had but one will. Upon the mention of the name of B. S. Royster, there was a prolonged round of ap plause and, before one hardly knew whet had happened, the convention bj a standing vote had unanimously en dorsed the general's candidacy. This taken, he was called upon for a speech which he gave in h?s usual happy manner, thanking his people in meas ured terms of deep gratitude, albeit his emotion was evidently playing strong ly upon him. When it become time for the ap pointment of delegates to the State con vention, the general again arose and did a most eminently proper and ap propriate thing. Advising the con vention that Col. R. O. Gregory was one of the two living" democrats who attended the State convention at Char lotte in 1858, 50 years ago, and that he has been continuously attending it since, and that he is one of the old original militant types of democ racy, he moved that the colonel be ap pointed a delegate at large from Gran ville. This was immediately seconded and unanimously passed. Then to this delegation there were added three other delegates at large and 20 mem bers from the various precincts, the list aonerinff in another column,as do the I lists of the delegations to the judicial j and congressional conventions. organized for the transaction of busi ness, General Royster, in a twenty minute falk, gave an account of his stewardship as chairman of the Dem ocratic county Executive committee during the eight years in which he has so effectively served in that capacity. Upon concluding his remarks, the generaj caned Mr d X. Winston, of Oak Hill, to temporarily fill the chair until upon m0tiOn of Dr. B. K Hays, the temporary organization was made permanent. " ' Upon being recognized, Judge A. W. Graham, in behalf of a committee: read Suitable resolutions that had been 'drafted in respect to the memory of the . . . late Dr. R. W. Hobgood and the late William T. Allen. These were passed unanimously. A vote was then taken in the matter of instructing the delegates to be ap pointed to the State, congressional, and judicial conventions, which respective ly meet in the following places:. State, Charlotte, June 24th; congressional, Greensboro, June 10th, and judicial, Durham, June 8th. The vote tabu lated, js as follows: . governor: solicitor 3 o - O O 1 , oo 3 a to tc a .2 a u. . A. Ashe, 15; B.E. Lacy. 49, which figured out in terms of the vote to be cast at Charlotte, Lacy 8:40, Ashe 2:60 Judge A. W. Graham, being recog nized by the chair, arose and in a five minute speech brought forward the name or senator lee fc. Overman, which was received with applause. Judge Graham brought to the atten tion of the convention the efficiency and integrity for which the senator is noted, and asked that it give a stand ing vote of endorsement of his actions of the past, and its desire of his contin uation in office. This was immediately done. r Upon the initiative of General Roys ter, a hearty endorsement was given to the candidacy of Mr. William A. Graham for the office of Commissioner of Agriculture and the delegates were instructed to use all honora ble means to effect his nomination at the hands of the Democratic party. The general's motion was seconded and unanimously carried. At two-thirty, the chair put the mo tion for adjournment, and the vicious members were soon in hot quest of the dinners for which they had voracious appetites.
