A Good Woman at Rest.
The death angel came to the home
of Mrs. J. H. Coley on January 5th,
3J09, and claimed tor its own his be
loved wife, Mary Currin Coley. aged
i;4. She was a devoted Christian and
was a member of Enon Baptist church
at the time ot her death. It is so sad
to go home and mother not there; her
chair is vacant her voice is still. Sue
leaves to mourn her death a husband
and seven children; Frank-, Joe, Jim
mie, and Herbert Coley, and Mrs.
Louis Taylor, Mrs. Leonard Gordon,
and Mrs. Tom Briggs. Weep not
loved ones for your loss is her eternal
gain. All was done that medical skill
and loving hands could do, hut God
knows best and we must say "Thy will
he done."
As a neighbor, she was ever ready
to lend a helping hand in time of need,
and it was my good pleasure to have
her visit my home the day before she
was taken sick. She suffered but nev
er complained She was quietly laid
to rest in the cemetery at Enon where
the services conducted by her pastor,

'Tis sad to say good bye, but we
have the sweet assurance If we trust in
God we shall meet again.

The Charlotte Observer of the (th
had the following from its Oxford cor
respondent: Oxford. x Feb. b Last Monday
morning the cadets had their first op
portunity of the winter to skate on ice.
Ridley's pond, close to the school, froze
over during the cold weather of the
two previous days, and in order for the
students to take full advantage of the
situation a half-holiday was granted.
It is needless to say that all the partic
ipants enjoyed the rare pleasure to the
fullest extent.
A number of the cadets attended an
oyster supper last night at the armory
given by the ladies of the town im
provement society. Leave has recent
ly been granted to all the students to
visit Oxford on Wednesday afternoon
in addition to the regular Saturday
and Sunday afternoon peimits.
Notice to Tax Payers.
The law provides that the taxes shall
be collected and settlement had bv
oune. i snail endeavor to comply
strictly with the law. The books will
be given to the township collectors by
March 15th, 1909, and those not pay
ing before that date may expect to
have cost to pay. All taxes not paid
by April the first .will be advertised
as provided by law. If you do not
wish to see your name in the paper as
a delinquent you had better get busy.

Judge Lyon's Home Burned.
The residence of Judge C. C. Lj'on
at Plizabethtown was destroyed Sun.
day afternoon by fire which originated
in the kitchin, adjoining the house.
Most of the furniture was saved, but
badly damaged. The loss is only par
tially covered by insurance. The
judge's family were at home, but he
was away, holding Harnett court this

Unearths a Rare Coin.
Mr. Tom Glover, while engaged in
tearing away an old fence on the plan
tation of Mr. George W. Wray, near
Shelby, found a curious coin which
has all our local numismatic experts
guessing as to its jdentity. The coin
is evidently of Indian origin. Irs
metal is copper. It is about the si;.,,
of a half dollar and is in irood Rtate ( f
preservation. Carved on one side is
the head of an Indian chief. On
reverse side appears the head of a
squavv and a papoose. The workman
ship shows unusual skill, the devu-ts
being well executed. There is no date,
no inscription, nothing but the Indian
characters as above described. .Shelby

ANNUAL EXAMINATION.
In pursuance of the annual custom of our
Directors the undursigned were appointed
a Gommittee for the purpose of examining
the Bank's affairs for the past year.

and securities of the National Bank of Gran
