OXFORD PUBLIC LEDGER, FRIDAY MAY 7, 1909 1 PRMINISCENCES I -SS OF AN That tall.intrepid old soldier.Squire J. P. Cannady, in spite of Saturday's murkey weather, came in town that day and paid a visit to the editorial den. Knowing that the sqcire has a great many interesting reminiscences lacked up in his chest, the editors be guiled him into talking about the war period, and after much persuasion made him promise faithfully that he would write several stories for theLed ger. He knows dozens of things that C'ranville people shouid know and many of them are known only by the squire himself. Squire, what command were you n?" the old soldier was asked. Fifty-6fth North Carolina,Johri R. Davis' brigade, Heath's division of A. P. Hill army corps, which was the 3id." "Now, 'Squire be right nice now and tell us a good story." After looking first at his watch and then out the door at the weather, he was at last teased into relating an in cident that he personally knew of. As I told you,"said he. as he shift ed his long alpenstock from the left to the right side of his chair, "I was a member of the 55th North Carolina which was brigaded with three Missis sippi regiments, the 11th, -and 7th, 42nd. The incident' I am about to tell you happened on the 3rd day of of the battle of Gettysburg, which you know was July of '63. "For some time, but how long I don't know, heavy cannonading had been raging between the two armies. There was a fellow of the 11th Missis sippi, named Jerry Gay, stationed on on the left of his regiment, which was joined to the right of ours.. & . , -3 56 St si St. -Sf ATTENTION OILiO as si is ES -Ss S? As he fell and struck the ground I saw that he was mortally wounded. When he hit the ground, he turned over and ran his hand over his face, and then over his "wounded parte. "While he was being examined, the litter corps came along and bore him to the field hospital, whence he was carried to the general hospital. 1 was the commander of the litter corps of twenty men and therefore went to see the wounded soldier carried back to field hospital. "He was stimulated with brandy. One of the doctors said: "Jerry, you are mortally wounded, and can't live long," at the same time giving him more brandy. "How long do you think I can live,' asked the brave fellow? "Can't tell exactly, but about two, thres, or four hourswas the response. "Then, said the dying man, "I want to write to my mother." "Can you write," he was asked. "Yes, I think I can." Pencil and paper was given him, and leaning for support against- an old house, Jerry wiote as follows: "My dear mother: I am most mor tally wounded and will soon be dead. fell at my post and this note will be handed to you by the doctor and I want you to give my dying regards to my folks, and to my intended, you know who. LcLzL the letter, "this is my blood,"and sign ed it, "Your devoted son, Jerry Gay." And in a very brief while the poor f jllow was dead. "That was awful wasn't it 'Squire?" "Yes it was awful," the squire re plied. Oh! I tell you he was a fine fellow. I don't know whether he was an officer or not, but he was a wealthy, accomplished, and well educated young man. He was soon to have been married. "Well.' the old soldier said, as he again looked at his watch, "I must be going. Good luck .to you." "Now, you are going to write some of these interesting incidents for us aren't you?" "Well, I dunno! I am so busy farming that I don't have much time, but if I can find time I will try and do something for you. Mean weather we are having, ain't it?" The readers of the Ledger can look forward with pleasure to some of the squire's interesting letters. R. JOHN KINNEY A Prominent Indianapolis Lawyer, Says, "After Grippe Take Vinol. It Built Me up and Made Me Feel Strong. 'The grippe left me in a nervous, weakened, run-down condition. Noth ing seemed to restore my strength. At last I tried Vinol with the very best of results. It built me up and made me feel like a different man, and I am now better and stronger than I have been for years." John Kinney, Indi anapolis, Ind. This is because Vinol is a genuine tonic and body builder which contains peptonate of iron together with every one of the body-building medicinal el ements of cod liver oil but without one drop of oil to upset the stomach and utard its work. Vinol acts directly on the stomach, creates a healthy ap petite, and enables the digestive organs to obtain the necessary elements from the food eaten to make rich, red blood, healthy flesh and muscle tissue and create strength. Your money back if Vinol fails to benefit. Hamilton Drug Co, Oxford. . . Granville Commercial Club.
