MON., MAY 9 VILLIAH S. HART in "The Border llfireless.'- We take pleasure to announce that William S. Hart, the popular Thomas H. Ince-Artcraft star, will be seen in his latest photoplay, "The Border Wireless," at our theatre next Mon day. This doubtless will delight our patrons, and the indications for record-breaking audiences are excel lent. This fine picture was directed by Mr. Hart himself under the supervis ion of Thomas H. Ince and the story deals with a bandit who enlists in the United States army and who, after . dispersing a band of Hun spies en gaged in sending information to Ber lin by wireless, is pardoned and finds ; happiness in the . love of a charming woman. ORPHEUM MATINEE AND NITE. fine torn That may seem queer talk under present building costs but we make the prediction advisedly. For some years to come our export of building materials is bound to be immense. For some years to come we will be unable to catch up with the demand at-home. We honestly believe we can sell to " you cheaper today than we can later on. tt ; " t LUMBER C9. People and things June Wetlding Madame Rumor says there is to be a June wedding in Oxford. County Boarders There are only two people in the county jail- one white and one col ored. Uncertain Weather Today may be balmy and warm, That is, if the wind don't blow; The weather man says its may storm Provided it doesn't snow. Card of Thanks We wish to express our heartfelt appreciation for the kindness shown us by our friends and neighbors dur Ing our, bereavement caused by the death of our husband and father. Mrs. C. D. Currin and children Farm Work Impeded Excessive rains are holding back farm work. Very little tobacco has been planted because the farmers have been unable to prepare the land for planting. Plants are becom lng oversized. Fish Supper , The big ten pound chub caught by Mr. Sam Wheeler at Cannady's mill pond last Monday, was served to twenty-three people at a supper Wed nesday evening and there was enough left to feed eleven people Thursday morning. Wheat Damaged The wheat crop is still looking fine but some apprehension is felt that the excessive rainfall recently may cause rust to set in. However, we have heard of only a few fields showing indications of this disease so far. Bridge Fund Grows When the work is completed cn the Oxford-Henderson road and the bridge is built across Roanoke river at Goode's Ferry, a lot of Oxford people will travel that route to and from Richmond. The South Hill En terprise states that the subscriptions to the bridge has reached $45,000. Full Moon In May Mr. C. B. Edwards of Raleigh, who is close observer of the weather, ad vises against taking off flannels and removing the stove until after the ful moon in May. He has noticed for many years that May weather is un reliable until after the full moon. The moon fulled on last Wednesday and you can now remove the stove and wear lighter underclothing withr out danger of catching cold. Watch the Tax Don't let any dealer excuse an un fair increase in the price of what he gells you by telling you that it is due to the luxury tax. He must make a separate item of the tax in your bill and compute it only on the part of the price in excess of the untaxed maximum. That is, a six-dollar hat is taxed on only one dollar of the price, and that at the rate of 10 per cent. The Tide Turned Often about all that is necessary to break up a bad practice or an un lawful custom, is for a few people with a little backbone to stand up against it. Then the great body of the people, who want to do right, will fall in behind the nervy leaders and the folks who are in the wrong will decide that they had better change their ways. Major Stem will evolve some plan by which to keep up with those who exceed the speed limit in the business section of Ox ford. ' A Bad Habit of Children The other day we saw a child put five copper coins in her mouth. We wondered if the paresis of the child was aware that copper coins carry bacteria. The scientists tell us that the disease-producing bacteria found on money cause boils, pus, blood poisoning, pneumonia, tuberculosis, typhoid fever,, diptheria, tonsilitis and erysipelas. The scientists advise evervbody who. handles money to wash their hands frequently in soap and water. Should Bar Fireworks - That every municipality in North Carolina, including the incorporated villages that have governing bodies, should lose no time in seeing to it that local ordinances include rigid prohibition of the sale as well as the use of fireworks for Fourth of July or other holiday celebrations, is the urgent insistence of Jas. R. Young insurance .- commissioner and fire marshal for the State. '. Other religious Services are "formal'' also, i. 4. according to a form, but dependent upon the preferences of the officiating minis ter, whereas our form is independent of both Priest and People; much of it the garnered result of hundreds of years af experience in such circumstances. If the objection means ''too formal," that is only a matter of degree. Ritual of any kind is only good man ners in God's House; there is little danger of its being overdone In American life. A changing ritual keeps us awake. Our Church people rarely fall asleep during the Service, they have too much to . do. Perhaps the average number slumber during the sermon where the minister does every thin gk A Service without so much "getting up and down" certainly brings "pins and needles" and "puts to sleep the legs of the little ones.
