OXFORD PUBLIC LEDGER TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1919 PAGE 2 COL. KIRKPATKICK POINTS TO DEADLY PARALLEL. " ' ! - I -.............MniiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiMiimiiiiiiiiiiil itnlllHniluilllilllfl.tniuiii 1 ""l'T "- 1 North Carolina Caimot Sleep at the Switch. (Charlotte Observer.) Col: Kirk patrick has prepared "deadly parallel" to be read studied by the business men of North Carolina. It is a parallel which tells a strong story. It is one which if we be true North Carolinians and progressive citizens we would read and ponder and then end by resolv ing to act. The colonel's parallel is made in the form of questions, which run as follows: "What is the matter with North Carolina? "Why is it that Maine votes $12, 000,000 for improved highways and N North Carolina none? "Why is it that Aalabama provid es a bond, issue of $52,000,000 for good roads and North Carolina none? What do you think of the State of Florida which has a six year pro gram to build 3,600 miles of hard surface roads at a cost of $300,000, 000 and North Carolina none? "How do you feel when New York votes $50,000,000 and Illinois $60, 000,000 for improved highways and North Carolina none? "Are you proud of the fact that Virginia plans a $60,000,000 pro- build 3,750 miles' of road Throughout the country today Afford to i there is a widespread interest in and a persistent demand for well direct ed play for the boys and girls. Playgrounds are a necessity if we are to do our best for the future and ' generations. Tne ionowing little poem snoula carry a real message to every citi zen of Oxford. It should make every, one feel more called upon to get in terested in the work that is to be done along the playground line soon. Will the people of Oxford answer the call of this little poem as it speaks the call of the children? "Give them a chance for innocent sport, Give them a chance for fun; Better a playground plot Than a court and jail when the harm is done. greater iom tr mum i I and your State none? "Are you gratified over, the fact that Georgia is submitting a consti tutional amendment providing for a $50,000,000 program when North Carolina has none? "Do you think your State is pro gressive when Kansas proposes 10, 700 miles of hard roads and North Carolina none? "Are you satisfied with the pres ent condition of your State when Louisiana shows a tage of finished roads Carolina? "What do you think when Arkan sas plans an $S0,000,000 program to build 7,200 miles of road and North Carolina none? "Are you willing for Missouri to outstrip North Carolina in a com prehensive plan of road building?" Following these pointed compar isions the colonel draws attention to the vast sums paid into the Federal treasury in excess profits tax by North Carolina and the comparativ ely small amounts brought back into the State out of the Federal road for road building. We quote him again: "As a North Carolinian, are you satisfied for your State to receive $3,991,636.88 for 1919, while Kan sas receive $8,000,000? "Do you expect to allow Alabama to receive $5,772,197.26 Federal aid as against North Carolina's $6,271, 590.88, when North Carolina pays into the Federal Government $101, 258,158 excess profit tax, as against Alabama's $12,874,000, or more than any Southern State east of the Mississippi River? In other words, North Carolina pays approximately eight times as much money as Ala bama and only receives $499,393.62 more for road purposes. "Texas pushes ahead with $150, 000.000 road program, Oklahoma and Tennessee are spending large sums of money to put their States out of the mud while North Caroli na sleeps. "If our Legislature does not pro vide us with a comprehensive State Hikhway System, and if we do not authorize immediately a sufficient State bond issue to build a State system of 'Hard Surface Highways,' our sister States will believe the trade that we ought to receive and also our Federal aid fund and taxes, and North Carolina will not be able to develop her agricultural, commer cial, and industrial interests." Give them a chance; if you stint them now, Tomorrow you will have to pay, A larger bill for a darker ill, So please give them a chance to play." Frank Jones, mail carrier of Monroe, was found hanging from a tree Monday morning, where he had evidently committed suicide. No cause has been assigned for the act, further than that he had been in ill health for some time. What, we de sire to ask, what became of the one who reared eight children, did the cooking for a family of ten and two hired men, made their clothes, milk ed the cows during the busy season, engaged in active management of poultry yard, did the washing and. ironing and kept her house in order? The purpose of such inquiry? We wish to trail a few sprigs of rhetorical ivy over her memory and rejoice in the fact that woman has emerged, if that is the word, from her leg irons and has her handcuffs about half way off. After the water supply was all but exhausted in Asheville there was a call to prayer to appeal to the Lord to send rain. Evidently, as as the Statesville doctor told his pa tient when the latter besought him anxiously to pray for him, the Ashe ville folks wanted to use "milder means " before accepting the last iesort of. calling on the Almighty for help. It is well for the race that "God is love," and that His mercy and patience- endureth forever. Usu ally man proceeds as if he were en tirely independent of the Ruler of heaven and earth. He who has all power is ignored until the children of men decide that there is no other recourse. Then thy call earnestly and mightily for help. If the Lord had any of the human in His make up He would ignore the cry of dis tress from those who acknowledge Him only when there seems to be no other way..
