With such unexcelled manufacturing advantages, and large quantity production, it is only natural that Studebaker is able to offer cars of sterling high quality at prices that make them the most exceptional values on the market. Take a SPECIAL-SLX, demonstration ride-or better still, drive the car yourself and get the "feel" of the wheel and you will be convinced that its mechanical excellence is a revelation. Chicago, 111., Feb. 6-- The tercen tenary of the' planting of the first potato in the United States will be next December, acording to Dr. Ber thold Lauffer, curator of anthropo logy, of the Field Museum here. 'The potato entered this country," Dr. Lauffer said, in an address be for the American Association for the Advancement of Science, "not as sur mised by de Candolle, through an al leged band of Spanish adventurers, but in a perfectly respectable man ner from Bermuda, where it haa been introduced some years previous ly from England. "It is a prank of fortune that the potato, originally a denizen of Chile and Peru, appears as a naturalized Englishman in the United States The potato had arrived in England about 1586 or a little ater. " "For a long time the belief was entertained by botanists that the openauk, described among the wild roots of Virginia by Thomas Hariot in, 1588, was to represent our po tato. This speculation is erroneous. Data from the History of the Bermu das now make it perfectly clear that the potato was one of the plants which at that time and until then (that is, 1621) Virginia had not" "The History of the Bermudas re ports that in 1613 the good ship Elizabeth brought potatoes from England to Bermuda. The hirtory further states that on the 2nd of De cember, 1621, Captain Nathaniel Butler,. Governor of the Bermudas, sent from St. Georges, in the Som mer Islands' to the Governor of Vir ginia (Francis Wyatt,) two large cedar chests wherein were fitted all such kinds and sorts of the country plants and fruits, as Virginia at that time and until then had not, including potatoes. There was a time when picking em ployees was a hit-and-miss Job, a trial-and-error matter which few employers believed could be corrected. This is the day of. doing things right and the modern employer is now selecting his associates, from the. office boy to the R2an highest up, with as much care as he would launch on an entirely new business venture. William Marvin Jackson, director of the Personnel De velopment service, writes r "If employees are carefully selected, with an eye to their real adaptability and fitness for the work to be done, it goes without question that they are much more likely to take an interest in their work, and hence, the business itself. If they are interested, they will get along well with their fellows and co-operate with their superiors. All of which means that they will grow, and there is no satisfaction for the em ployee greater than that which accom panies the knowledge that he is get ting somewhere. Patting him on the back may make him feel good, and irood salary may make him work harder. But giving him a new job and bigger job will alone make him supremely happy, will alone make him work with complete aban don, with thorough-going enthusiasm." Forbes Magazine. Turning to Water Power. French and British commissions are giving most serious attention to water power as a substitute for coal. Britain's coal, though still plentiful, is within measurable distance of exhaustion. France never has had coal enough. Both, therefore, are making every ef fort to develop a form of power which can not be exhausted. Extensive works are projected to utilize the waterfalls of the Jura mountains and the French side of the Pyrenees, while a British group of investigators has re ported that In one district of Scotland, water power can be developed suffi cient to take the place of nearly 2,000, 000 tons of coal per year. (News and Observer) Governor Cameron Morrison is not only opposed to the organization of the Ku Klux Klan in North Caro lina but has under consideration a measure which will prohibit the op eration of the Klan in this State- The Governor is standing flat foot ed against organization which at tempts by secret means and process es to enforce law .enforcement in the State. This, the Governor believes, is the function of the State and the Federal government and there is no authority under the spirit 'of law at least tor the underwriting of its pro cesses by a secret order. This, the Governor understands, is the pur pose of the. Ku Klux Klan.. Governor Morrison is ready to Federal Income Since these returns are so complex in their nature it is quite difficult to prepare them according to the law except by advice of trained experts. My ex perience of six years as Chief of the Income Tax Division for the Eastern District of North Carolina enables me to give this advice and see that the tax payer takes advantage of every allowance granted un der therlaw. There was jus tification then, according to his. views, because such a step was nec essary to maintain Anglo Saxon civ ilization in the South. At this time, the law is abunrinnti able to cope with any situation which develops and if not, the General as cembly of North Carolina is bienni ally in session, subject to call intA special session at any time, and it may provide new law if that is need ed. Just what steps the Governor anti cipates taking is problematical. It is known that he has conferred with a number of interested men in thp State concerning this order and feels very deeply concerning it. The present organization, known n the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, is said to have a large following in Georgia, South Carolina and other Southern States as weir as a hi membership in New York. It's membership is said to be made nn of lawabiding and sober citizens. Or ganizing in Raleigh recently as the first point, local branches were es tablished in many points in North Carolina.
