' Astronomical lnstrumentsCarried Off by German Troops Restored to Peking. ' Peking, China. The astronomical Instruments which were looted from Peking by the German army in 1900 and removed to Potsdam have been returned to Chlha. They were sent back in accordance with the provi sions of the treaty of Versailles, by which Germany undertakes to restore to China within 12 months from the coming into force of the present treaty ali instruments which her troops in 1900-1901 carried away from China and to defray all ex penses which may be incurred in ef fecting such restoration, including the expenses of dismounting, packing, transporting, insurance and installa tion in Peking. The theft of these Instruments was the subject of much adverse comment In Europe, America and China, at the time, and even In Germany a certain portion of the press vigorously de nounced their "appropriation" and the project of erecting them in front of the Orangery in Sans Soaci park, where Prince Chun resided dur ing his penitential mission. Even the Berlin Neuste Nachrichten quoted with apparent approval the strong protests' which had been made by other journals, and expressed the hope that a prompt official explana tion would be forthcoming. The Co logne Gazette made a Vigorous pro test, so vigorous, indeed, that the Ger man government, to quiet it. an nounced that the German minister in Peking had been instructed to "buy" the instruments after the offer of the Chinese government to make a present of them to the German em peror had been declined. The instruments adorned the Pots dam Orangery until their restoration to China was ordered by the victors in the great war. Thousands of vis itors to the world-famous observa tory in Peking had noticed the empty plinths and had been reminded of the vandalism in 1900. Chinese newspapers here have remarked that the return of the looted instruments is the sole benefits that China has derived- from participation in the war. Long Service In the Vineyard.
