Correspondence on all matters of interest—news items, notes or suggestions for better methods of [arm or industrial developments, improvement of roads, schools, ^tc.—is earnestly solicited. Ipretgn Representative AM HRi< AX PRESS ASSO. THE ^ HiKESE SYSTEM It would probably delight the phy sicians ijf all their patients .would fol low the plan adopted by Samuel \ au elain, president'of Bolwin's Locomo tive works, and pay an annual retain er to keep them in health. Mr. Vauclain has made a ten-year agreement with his doctor according to which the doctor will keep him well in return for payment increasing In amount each year as the patient grows older. The payment is to be deducted for such time as he may be gick. The plan is working very well, for Mr. Vauclain says that since he adopted it and since he gave his doc tor frequent opportunities to look him over his health .has been better than it has been in years. Most of us postpone consulting a doctor as long as possible, and then it frequently happens that the doctor tells us that if we had gone to him a week or two earlier he could have checked in its incipient stages what ever ailed us and could have saved us a lot of suffering. And many of us refuse to follow the advice of the doctor when we do consult him. No convention of medical men ad journs without some one having said during its course that he has lost a case because the sick person came to him tpo late. There are a few wise persons who allow theii doctor to give them a thorough ex amination oncd a year; fewer still get this examination every six months, and now and then there is one who passed beyond the age of sixty vearg who corents to an exami* nation every three months. But the rule is to trust to luck and to let the human machine run without atten tion until it breaks down. But, as a doctor said at the recent convention po intelligent man will let a piece of inanimate machinery suffer such neg lect. _ TOO ACCOMMODATING A New Jersey man bought an auto mobile, but was afraid that he could not pass the tests to which applicants for a motorist's license are subjected by the New Jersey ; law. Joseph Ruberton, his friend, agreed to im personate him at the examination. The attempted fraud was discovered and a heartless Hammonton magis trate has fined Rubertpn $200. Thus does friendship suffer punishment when it goes too far. But it does not always stop three. Sometimes the friend is rewarded, as happened in Boston a few years ago. A politician took a civil service ex amination for a friend who was afraid that he could not pass. The reformers charged him with it and he was convicted in,court, and sent to jail- But when his sentence expired he was .ejected to the Board of Aider men as a reward for his conduct and later y-as elected Mayor. But this was n^t in New Jersey. W, __ , TEEING THE UNEXPECTED At plitche! Field, N. Y., the other ^a.y a. haotorless sailplane took the )dr after being towed by a mbtorcycle going twenty-five miles an hour. The fatt is interesting, because some day these earnest experimenters are go ing to bump into some fact that will revolutionize aviation, and ho man hBQWS the moment it is going to happen bor in which direction to look for it. THE PRICE OF LIQUOR "More work for , the undertaker. Another little job fbr the tombstone maker.
