CHERKAS \ r#E srop MW (Charlotte Observer) j The complaints that were heard in I the eariy days of operation of the j North Carolina stop law, as applied [ to railroad crossings, appear to have i ceased entirely. Some people in j whose minds the safety-first princi ; pie obtains, observe the law to the ! letter and take the trouble to come to a complete halt; others slow down al I most to a stop, and ail have a caution, j The respect paid the law explains the j absence of crossing accidents during ! the past few months. An accident at ) the crossing now is regarded as sen } sational news. The law as applied j to this State gives opportunities for modifications, and it will be modified at the next session of the Legisla ture, but it is unquestionabiy prov } ing a popular iaw and is on the books I to stay. The stop low, morover, i promises to become of general adop tion. It is now in force in five States: these five being North Caro lina, Illinois Tennessee, Virginia and } Montana. It is stated in The Rail ' way age that operation of the Illinois ' taw is limited by the proviso that it j shall apply at only crossings having an official stop sign, and these signs ! have been set up. The Railway Age ] points out, only at crossings which I have been formally designated by the ! Corporation Commission as extra ! hazardous. The number thus desig ) nated is about 4,500. The law of Montana has an elabo rat modifying clause which requires a full stop at crossings outside cities and towns, where the view is obscure, or where a train is within sight or hearing, "except at crossings having a mechanical warning or flagman." and no penalty for violation of the ! mw is specified. j The i*w of North Carolina contains } a clause to the effect that local autho rities can still have their own way at crossings. The law of Tennessee has been in I f')i-ce six years, but to a large extent I has been generally ignored or disre !garded. — Mow To Clarify a Soup. First, strain the soup stock into ' a bowl and leave it uncovered until {the fat'hardens in a cake on top, j Remove this cake of fat. (If you : are in a hurry and can not wait un til the fat hardens, skim off as much as possible with a spoon and remove the rest by putting in lumps of ice; the fat hardens on the ice and may be removed in thesway. Or if you have no ice, remove the fat with sheets of tissue-paper as you would blot*up ink.) After this is removed, I measure the stock and put it in a ] saucepan. Allow one egg-white and one shell for each quart of stock. Beat and add both to the stock. Put over the fire and stir constantly un til it begms to boil. Continue boil jing for two minutes, lower the heat i?.nd let it barely simmer for 20 min ! utes.
