(adv) ! '-—____ Suggested to Senator Edge. (X. Y. Evening World) j Senator Edge has introduced a . lesolution providing for a Congres sional Commission to consider sug gestions for the iightening of the jhuroens of the President. The on I ly suggestion it appears to have in .mind is the limitation of the Presi , dcncy to one term. { Put the burdens killed President ; Harding in less than one term. Half ;ot one term was sufficient to weaken i Wilson. A letter from Buchanan, written while in office, has recently {been discovered in which he coin . plains that even in 1859 the bur dens were beyond the strength of an ordinary man. The killing pace of the Presidency is not due to length of service but to he nature of the burdens that fall I with crushing weight from the mo ment of an induction into office. And the members of the Congress can {lighten these—if they will. { For "having Congress on his I hands" is the heaviest burden of all. The ceaseless importunities of the seekers of pap and patronage; the daily intrusion with problems of pet ty local politics; the Congressional passion for evading responsibility and "passing the buck;" the ever in creassing interference with executive rights and prerogatives; the bicker ing and back-biting of the cloak rooms, and the everlasting smash ing of Presidential programs for the sake of votes in Podunk—these are the burdens that break the strong- { est of the Presidents. Congress can lighten the burdens ' of the President by attending to its own business—and by meeting its duty and doing its work. Graved 7aafefess Stops Malaria, Restores Strength and Energy. 60c Going to McLean. — (Hickory Daily Record) With Aubrey L. Brooks, of Greens^ boro, rallying to the cause of A. W. McLean, of Lumberton, the closing year sees an increase in political ac tivity that will make it necessary for htose who would oppose the Robe son man to show their strength be fore he has the gubernatorial nomi nation practicaly sewed up. Brooks brings an element ineo the McLean camp that has never affiliated clos ely with the old guard; Mr. Brooks is brilliant and commands a follow ing who have never forgot that he was once malterated following a heated primary campaign for Con gress. The only other candidate suggest ed to oppose Mr. McLean is J. W. Bailey, of Raleigh. Mr. Bailey has been waiting for the voice of the people—in case the farmers—to cal! him from retirement to lead their hopes. But North Carolina farmers, [everything considered, ave enjoyed prosperity almost as great as the boom year of 1919 and calamity will have no appeal for them. The Record, as its readers know, has never become much aroused over politics, but it has determined, as a result of recent developments in this gtate, to view with alarm the aspira ttioons of men whom it holds are un worthy of public office and trust. It is not putting Mr. Baiiey, a very able I and careful man, in that class. The Record does not admire him as much as it does Mr. McLean, who is a sub stantial man in the true sence of the word, but it has no cause to fight the Raleigh lawyer. Mr. Bailey is one of The Record's friends—a more gifted writer and speaker it does not know. But it seems that the cards are falling right for Mr. McLean. Sen timent seems to be centering on him for Governor. GIRLS!
