Williams is confined to his home by a serious accident the day' after Christmas. The little fellow who was skating on the pavement, had a "spit devil" in his pocket and as he sustained a severe fall, the fire cracker ignited in his pocket as he fell to the pavement. It continued to explode and the little boy was se verely burned before the explosive and his pants could be taken off. He will be confined to his bed for fen days while the severe burns are heal ing. Ag badly as he is burned the l brave little fellow contends that he ! wants more fire works next Christ inas. —Tbe Oxford Woman's Club will hold its regular monthly meeting on Wedne-sday afternoon, January the 9th, at 3:30 o'clock. This being the first meeting of the new year, a full attendance is urged. —Miss Lillian McFarland, the smart and pretty daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. McFarland, has returned to Galloudet College, Washington City, after spending the holidays at! home. —Mrs. .J. M. Blalock entertained the Baptist Phiiatheas in a delight ful meeting in which their teacher C. O. Mainor conducted devotional ex ercises, and Mrs. Aubrey Moore pre sided at the business hour. I —At a very enthusiastic meeting ! of the Church Service League of the Episcopal Church on Monday night, much interest was manifested in the work of the church. Enthusiastic re < ports were made by members of all { organizations which showed the work of the church to be in a very flourish i ing condition. Rev. Lewis Tayhu ; Rector of the church at Roanoke Rapids, made an excellent talk. The ' annual election of officers resulted 'as follows; President, Mrs. H. G. } Cooper, Sec-Treas, Mrs. M. C. Taylor. Mrs. R. G. Lassiter the retiring pres ident has been a most efficient pre siding officer. —A very delightful gathering of the New Year was on New Year's Day at the home of Mrs. J. W. Horner when she entertained the Woman's Literary Club for itg initial meeting of the New Year. If the prophetic adage of repeating things during the eutire year that are done On the New Year, holds good, many charming and delightful meetings are in store for the members of this Club. The home was attractively decorated with Christmas greens and flowers which added greatly to the attractiveness of the lovely home. Mrs. R. G. Lassiter president of the Club presided. Mrs. B. E. Parham, in a very charming manner read the minuteg of the pre ceeding meeting. The members re sponded to roll call by giving very cordial New Year Greeting, many of which were original. The subject of i the afternoons program was, "Mod istes and Fashions." Mrs. E. T. White read a very entertaining paper on, "Fashions of Today in Woman's Dress; Who Xakes Them? The Ef fect of Sport and Athletics on Styles of Dress." The subject of tne sxetch by Mrs. R. L. Brown was, "Style of Dress Observed by the Different Na tions—What Influences It? Both of these papers were listened to eagerly by all present and greatly enjoyed. Mrs. H. M. Shaw gave a very enter taining Reading on, "The Sleeves of All Nations." At the conclusion of this enjoyable program, Mrs. Hor ner assisetd by Miss Lucy Baskerville, served an elegant repast. CMHMTtMS G4R0M Mrs. Pittman Pleased With the Old Custom. Last Saturday night about 8:30 o'clock a number of people came to my porch and sang the Christmas i Carols. It was the sweetest music I ever heard, and if everybody could , fee! as reverent and as near to God I as I did I think it would be well to ! keep it up. It is such a beautiful old I custom revived.
