CURRENT EVENTS —— The revenue bill signed by Presi dent Coolidge on June 2 brings national taxes to the lowest level since the beginning of the war. It provides for a twenty-five per cent reduction on taxes payable this year, a general revision of both the nor mal and the-surtax rates, amounting to a fifty per cent cut on taxes le vied against incomes in $8000 or less, an aditional reduction of twenty-five per cent on earned incomes and an increase of $500 in exemption tor the heads of families whose incomes are $5000 and over. The President said that he approved the bill because it reduces taxes and makes some re forms in taxation, but that it does not embody a sound, permanent tax policy. He criticized it especially because it maintains a high surtax rate, increases the tax on estates, es tablishes a tax on gifts and purports to £ive publicity to the taxpayer’s re turns. — ■ The Methodist Episcopal General Conference has voted to tolerate un der proper conditions the dancing, Card playing and theatre-going, which have been forbidden since _ In Italy no week passes without eome fresh demonstration from Sig nor Mussolini that he is the dominant j figure. Addressing the government majority in the new Chamber, he de clared that he was about to give Par liament its last chance as a means of government. If the experiment j failed, he would suppress Parliament and arrange for other vehicles of gov- | ernment to take its place. He mod erated the threat, however, by em- i phasizing his desire and determina tion to do everything in his power to make the Italian Chamber a model of parliamentary institutions and by invoking the support of his followers in that effort. I Mr. George P. Baker of New York,; one of the two or three richest men in the country and to the extent of millions of dollars a benefactor of the Red Cross .Cornell University^the Metropolitan Museum of Art, ''the American Museum of Natural History i the New York Hospital and other in- j Btitutions and causes, has given $5,-( 000,000 as a peramennt endowment of the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. It is in-j teresting to know that Mr. Baker, who is now eighty-four years of age, began his business career more than seventy years ago as a boy working in a grocery story in Troy, New York, for two dollars a week. His next step upward was to become a night watchman at five dollars a week. President Coolidge in his Memo rial Day speech repudiated the substi tutes that have been suggestive for the world court as now constituted and intimated that he should oppose any changes that would be unlikely to receive the consent of the manj other nations that are already mem bers of the world court. The three American round-the world fliers made successfully the flight from Kagoshima, Japan, to Shanghai—the last long over-water flight until they cross the Atlantic. In Japan, notwithstanding the resent ment against America aroused by the exclusion act recently passed by Congress the aviators weie treated "with marked courtesy and respect. The failure of the McXary Haugen bill by a decisive vote in the House of Representatives resulted in a statement by the Republican leaders ip the House that, although they fully realize the condition of agricul ture and had the most earnest desire to bring relief to the farmers by legis lation as far as was possible, they had been unable to work out a plan that would command the necessary sup port. The whole question of farm relief will therefore have to go over until the next session of Congress. j Similarly the Senators interested in ! the question what disposition should ! be made of the hydroelectric pow er enterprise at Muscle Shoals have decided that consideration of it must be postponed until next December. i ' j Wholesale sentences of death con tinue to be dealt out under the Bol shevik regime in Russia. After twenty-seven hours of deliberation the Supreme Court at Lemingrad condemned to death seventeen form er judges, court officials, lawyers and persons connected with the opera tion of the New Economic Policy corruption and bribery. The public who had been tried on charges of prosecutor declared that ‘the secu rity of the revolution demands that we shall pave our way to truth with an axe, but in this case we have to pave our way not through forests but upon live heads. We must do it mercilessly.” The Supreme Court, which passed the death sentence on seventeen out of forty-eight defen dants, is now engaged in trying one hundred and seven persons for es pionage and counter-revolution. THE BEST THING (Cherryville Eagle) A Cherryville school teacher, some time ago, asked her pupils what they regarded as the best and most val uable thing in this community. The children wrinkled their brows, looked perplexed and one of them answered the question. But they were all wide of the mark.. The teacher indicated the answers were wrong as each pupil made his or her supreme effort to find the cor rect answer to the knotty problem. Finally the teacher, when they were all expectant and very much excited over what really was the best thing in this community, told them that they themselves, were the best and most valuable. _ ! It was somewhat of a jolt for little folks, especially those with a keen imagination, who has conjured up many wonderful things. The teach er’s answer brought them back to earth, but it gave them a sense of their importance in the world. It should also give every person! living in the community, regardless of whether they have children in the j public schools, something to think! about, when we think along lines of j Sideache Backache “I have been taking Car dui,” says Mrs. Lillie Bolton, of Lake Providence, La. “I got down in bad health and lost in weight , until I only weighed 120 pounds. I had bad pains in my sides and back and my legs hurt me until I couldn’t walk. I stayed in bed half the time. I tried all kinds of medicine, but it did me no good. Finally I tried The Woman’s Tonic “It seems like it did me good from the very first. After I had taken half a bottle I no ticed an improvement. I con tinued its use and I got bet ter and better. The pains in my legs and sides disap peared and I began to gain in weight until now I weigh 155 pounds and feel better than I ever did in my life. I am perfectly well and strong. I have given it to my girls, too.” Cardui has relieved many kinds of pains and distress ing symptoms caused by fe male trouble. It should help you, too, in the same way. For we cannot build for the future any better than by making better boys and girls who will become better men and women and make this a bet ter comunity in the next generation. We can build, for the future, not alone by teaching children at home how to live right, but by supporting the teacher, the school authorities and the whole public school system to the best of our ability and to the limit of our means. We cannot hope for our community to rise any higher in the future than our public school system. —Trapping is perhaps the most ef fective method of destroying raol^s, but they may be poisoned. “THE COVERED WAGON” July 14 and 15 Orphenm, Oxford, N.
