Two teen-age Granville County
brothero, charged with a series of
armed stick-ups, pleaded guilty in
Wake Superior Court in Raleigh on
Monday to a charge of holding up a
store near Youngsville.
Presiding Judge Luther Hamilton
sentenced 15-year-old Gilbert Mat
thews V'omack to five years on
probation. Judgment was reserved in
the ease of William Lockett Wom-
ble, Jr., 18, who allegedly planned
the robbery.
Charges of robbery in Franklin
County and in Virginia are pending
against the two.
Judge Luther Hamilton, presiding
over the Wake Court, first consid
ered sanding the younger boy to
Eastern Carolina Training School
at Rocky Mount. In that way, he
stated, he felt that the boy would
be dealth with lightly when tried on
the Franklin and Virginia charges.
He changed the judgment to proba
tion when the boy’s father said he
would take the chance of a harsh
er judgment in the coming trials.
“This way it will be fixed so you
won’t have to go to prison unless
you send yourself there,’’ the judge
told the youth, who resides with his
parents in Southern Granville near
Brassfield church.
“I don't like to be the one to
send an 18-year-old to State Pris
on for the first time,” Judge Ham
ilton commented in considering
judgment in the case of the older
boy. He reserved judgment until
later in the term when Solicitor
William Y. Bickett expressed op
position to having the youth com
mitted to the training school at
Rocky Mount.
The tv.'o boys with a 12-year-old
brother who was turned over and
later released by juvenile authori
ties, admitted entering O. B. Gay’s
store near Younsville, masked and
armed with a .32 pistol, and rob
bing two patrons of $12 and the
cash regi-Tter of $40. The robbery
occurred on April 23. The boys were
apprehended the follownig morn
ing.
Deputy G. C. Massey of Wake
County testified that the two
younger boys told him that Wil
liam planned the robbery. When
they left their home in Granville
County that night, the deputy said
he was told, William told his young
er broiher that they were going to
the show at Creedmoor.
The youths admitted staging
similar re bberies in Franklin Coun
ty on April 10 and at Chase City,
Va., April 9.
